Sniff some rosemary to boost your brain power Studies have shown that the scent of rosemary can help in better mental performance and make individuals feel more alert. A team of scientists from the University of Northumbria, UK, has discovered that one of the active essential oils in rosemary improves speed and accuracy when performing mental tasks. 7 Crunch on carrots for a cleaner mouth Eating carrots can scrape off plaque and food particles just like toothbrushes and toothpaste. Chewing on carrots also stimulates gums and triggers a lot of saliva, which balances out cavity-forming bacteria. As an added bonus, the nutrients and minerals in carrots prevent tooth damage. Slap on the sunscreen Sunscreen can protect your skin against skin cancer and premature aging. But it needs to be applied properly. Choose a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher, is water-resistant and provides broadspectrum coverage to protect you from UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen generously before going out as it takes approximately 15 minutes for your skin to absorb it. Re-apply sunscreen at least every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating excessively. Make sure you eat breakfast Mom was right breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Fibre in the morning means less hunger late in the afternoon, when you re most likely to feel tired and gorge yourself on sugar. Try eating some delicious oats mixed with raisins, nuts and cinnamon to keep your metabolism boosted throughout the day. Get ready for ripe, juicy mangoes The most widely consumed fruit in the world; mangoes are available in South Africa from December to March. Some of the possible health benefits of eating this delicious fruit include a decreased risk of macular degeneration and colon cancer. Eating mangoes also improves digestion and bone health. Page 7

9 Extended CDE benefit offering Diabetes is a serious health concern as it affects approximately 4.5 million South Africans. Diabetes type 1 and type 2 as well as Diabetes Insipidus are all included on the list of 26 Prescribed Minimum Benefit conditions that must be covered as stipulated by the Council for Medical Schemes. Our diabetes benefit which is run through the Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology (the leading experts on diabetes in South Africa) is designed to aid members with diabetes by: Educating them on diabetes Co-ordinating patient care Giving them access to consultations with diabetes doctors and specialist Arranging and covering a consultation with a dietician Covering diabetes blood tests Managing prescriptions and medicine Offering CDE diabetes specialist review The benefit is available on BonComprehensive, BonClassic, Standard, BonSave, Primary and BonEssential. It will also be included on BonFit and Standard Select. Introducing ICPS We partnered with Improved Clinical Pathway Services (ICPS) to create a hip and knee replacement programme available to all members on the Standard Option. ICPS is a group of orthopaedic surgeons that specialise in performing hip and knee replacements. They use a multidisciplinary team dedicated to assist members with rapid and successful recovery, keeping patients as comfortable as possible during the healing period. This programme has been established to help members to take an active part in planning for their recovery for hip or knee surgery as well as ensuring financial peace of mind. The ICPS work according to standardised clinical care pathways. These care pathways have been developed in accordance with evidence-based outcomes to make sure that the quality of the replacement is of the highest standard. ICPS will manage everything from start to finish including: All hospital costs Surgeons and anaesthetist fees Prosthesis (subject to prosthesis benefit) Physiotherapist (pre-, intra- and post-operative) Seeing clearly with Iso Leso On 1 January 2015, Iso Leso was appointed as our preferred provider for optical benefits. This highlights our aim of partnering with world-class service providers. Iso Leso is owned and run by optometrists, so they are bestpositioned to offer our members superior service and top- notch advice. This growing network has over 900 providers located country-wide who are equipped to provide our members with excellent service. BonCap contact lenses boost We enhanced the optical benefits on BonCap by offering cover for contact lenses. This effectively set us apart from competing products as most network options that cater for lower income segments do not allow for contact lenses under their optical benefits. However, we believe that our members should have the freedom to choose their optical treatment. Something special for students We introduced an income band on BonCap which caters specifically for students. The Student Option allows students under the age of 28 to be main members on their own medical aid. Students are required to provide proof of registration at a recognised tertiary institution in South Africa. This membership can be paid for by parents who belong to other plans. Working behind the scenes with co-ordination of care Co-ordination of care aims to improve the quality of healthcare and lower overall health expenditure by bringing various healthcare providers and services together to create an integrated healthcare system. This encourages high collaboration and sharing of information between the patient and the various healthcare providers that make up a healthcare team including family practitioners, specialists, nurses and pharmacists. The family practitioner s role as the primary treating doctor is integral to this. Patients need to nominate a family practitioner and then continue consulting them for all their health care needs. The nominated family practitioner, then has the best understanding of the patient s health and treatment history and shares this information with the healthcare team. The family practitioner would also determine whether a Specialist Referral is necessary; recommend a Specialist that is best suited to diagnose and treat the patient s condition, and work closely with the patient s healthcare team to ensure the patient receives the best of care. It includes: Wellness programmes (including personalised interactive diet and fitness Programmes) with weekly tips and guidelines based on your specific needs. You ll also be able to track your performance. Self-assessment tools to help you assess your lifestyle and health status. An A-to-Z database of diseases and conditions which includes explanations of specific conditions including symptoms, risk factors and treatment options. First aid and wellness information and tips. E-tutorials covering a range of topics including backache, chronic illnesses, depression, stress management, weight loss and work place health. Practical advice, case studies and questionnaires will be ed to you to enhance your understanding of the topics covered. A pregnancy programme with regular electronic newsletters to support and educate expectant parents. To access the portal, make sure you are registered on then simply log in and click on the YourHealth Portal link. NEW PLANS FOR 2016 After careful consideration of our members needs and concerns we ve introduced two new plans so that you can find a healthcare solution to best suit your needs. Choose your doctor, use the network and say yes to Standard Select Boasting the full range of benefits of the Standard Option at a lower price, Standard Select requires you to nominate a GP and use hospitals and specialists on the network. This innovative new plan is perfect whether you re single or are married and have children. Decide how to use your savings with BonFit Featuring a hospital plan with annual savings of 15% for day-to-day benefits, BonFit is perfect for younger and healthier people. It offers you and your family peace of mind, knowing you re covered for major medical events at a network hospital as well as access to savings to use as you choose. 11 Our 2016 benefit changes Most benefit limits have increased by inflation, rounded off to the nearest hundred rand on all options. We ve also included some new benefits. Preventative care is better than cure Added to supplementary benefits on all our plans, the Preventative Care Benefit covers specific tests which help identify specific health conditions early so you can get the treatment and help you need. The benefits available on each option are detailed in the table below. It will be available online and consists of several questions based on your physical and mental wellbeing. As soon as you complete the questionnaire, you will receive feedback on your cardiovascular, lifestyle and mental health risk factors. The questionnaire and screening tests can be done at Wellness Days and participating pharmacy clinics (including Dischem, Clicks and Pick n Pay). 12 Head down the path to good health with the Wellness Extender Benefit After completing the components of the Wellness Screening Benefit, you will have access to the Wellness Extender Benefit. After registering, you have the choice to consult with a general practitioner, biokineticist, dietician or physiotherapist, access a smoking cessation programme or obtain a wearable device from one of our participating healthcare providers. This benefit is limited as follows based on the plan you re on: BonComprehensive R2 000 per beneficiary BonClassic R1 400 per beneficiary Standard R1 400 per beneficiary Standard Select R1 400 per beneficiary BonSave R1 000 per beneficiary Primary R1 000 per beneficiary BonFit R1 000 per beneficiary Enhanced maternity benefits We strive to create the best experience for you and your loved ones during pregnancy by offering the necessary health information and support. One amniocentesis test has been added to the maternity benefit on the following plans Standard, Standard Select, Primary, BonComprehensive, BonClassic, BonSave, BonFit and BonEssential. In addition, we ve enhanced the mother and baby gift pack to give and your little one even more value. All expectant mothers will have to register on our new maternity programme to receive this gift. Call the call centre on or log in at to register. You can also register for the programme when you pre-authorise your hospital stay. Travel benefit update ER24 is the new provider for the International Travel Benefit. Available on all plans except BonCap, this benefit provides cover of R5 million per person up to maximum of R10 million per family. Cover is provided for up to 90 days per trip, irrespective of the number of trips made during the year. Please note that certain exclusions apply. Other benefit changes: The annual limit for cochlear implants on BonComprehensive, BonClassic and Standard has increased by 49% to R per family. The co-payment in threshold on BonComprehensive has been removed. Alzheimer s disease, Cystic fibrosis, Deep vein thrombosis and Dermatomyositosis have been added as chronic conditions on BonComprehensive. The GP benefit on Standard will now be a stand-alone benefit paid exclusively from risk to help your day-to-day benefits last longer. The R2 500 co-payment for laparoscopic nephrectomy on BonSave, Primary and BonEssential has been removed. Introduce ICPS will be the preferred provider for hip and knee replacements on BonClassic, Standard Select and the Standard Option. The co-payment will be R5000 if ICPS is not used on these options. 13 Tips to beat the heat With temperatures soaring this summer, be sure to follow these tips to stay sun smart and beat the heat. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF30 to protect your skin from harmful UV rays slap Eat foods with a high water content such as fruit and vegetables w ra p EAT Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes S H A DE Stay out of the sun at midday when the sun s rays are strongest hydrate Drink at least eight glasses of water a day shower Take cool showers to bring your body temperature down Cover up Loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and trousers provide the best protection slip Wear a hat to protect your face and head from the sun s harmful rays Page 13

14 How waiting periods work Awaiting period is a set amount of time during which members pay contributions but are not entitled to any benefits during this time, except for PMB conditions in some instances. There are two types of waiting periods A general waiting period can last up to 3 months. A beneficiary is not entitled to any benefits (in some instances not even PMBs) during this period. If a beneficiary submits claims during a general waiting period, they will not be paid. A condition-specific waiting period can last up to 12 months. During this time a beneficiary is not entitled to any benefits for a particular condition for which medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment was recommended or received. When do waiting periods apply? Waiting periods generally apply if you or your dependants were not on a medical aid for a period of at least 90 days before you joined Bonitas, if you have never been a member of a medical aid or if you chose to move from another medical aid to Bonitas. Waiting periods will not apply: To children born during membership; as long as they are registered within 30 days of birth. If application is made to register a foster child or adopted child dependant within 3 months of the date on which fostership or adoption was granted. If application is made to register a spouse within 3 months of marriage. To a main member who is forced to join Bonitas due to a change in employment. If your employer moves to another medical aid and the change is made within a 90-day period. Why do medical schemes apply waiting periods? Waiting periods affect the richness of the benefits we offer, premium increases and our solvency ratio. They are designed to protect existing members while being fair to new members. By law, open medical aids like Bonitas are not allowed to turn away any person who wants to join, unless they are already registered as a member on another medical aid. Waiting periods prevent members who may be high claimers when joining from receiving benefits in excess of what they have contributed. Page 14 Bonitas Member Magazine 2016 Issue 1

The CDE DMP is a multi-specialist approach to the management of diabetes. The CDE, in partnership with Bonitas Medical Fund, provides a comprehensive and holistic approach to the care of the person with diabetes, according to internationally accepted standards of care. The CDE also trains, mentors and accredits many healthcare professionals in the principles of good diabetes care. The CDE DMP is brought to you by the CDE, Bonitas and your doctor to provide and ensure the following personal benefits: Individualised care focussed on helping you to maintain optimum wellness and to prevent or delay diabetes related complications. You will consult the right people for your diabetes care. Your diabetes and related health risks will be monitored and your personal treatment plan adjusted as required to maintain control of your diabetes You will receive the most appropriate therapies for your diabetes care. You will have emergency support. All persons on the CDE DMP have access to a 24-hour Hotline facility to assist our members and their families in the event of a diabetes-related emergency. 16 Get back and neck rehab with the DBC Back and neck pain is very common. Four out of five people suffer from pain at least once during their lives. As part of our managed care offering, the back and neck rehabilitation programme assists members who suffer with chronic and debilitating back and neck pain. How does the programme work? Run in partnership with Documentation Based Care (DBC), this multidisciplinary programme includes treatment from doctors, physiotherapists, and biokineticists to treat severe neck and back pain. After an initial assessment, beneficiaries receive treatment twice a week for three to six weeks. We cover the full cost of the programme. Who can access this benefit? This benefit is available to members identified by the beneficiary risk management team and providers may contact us to register eligible beneficiaries. Members may also self-refer. Identified or eligible members are then referred to the programme. This benefit is not available to members on BonCap. Where are DBC centres located? There are currently 11 centres located across South Africa. DBC centres can be found in Durban, Cape Town, Fourways, Kempton Park, Emahleni, Centurion, Pretoria, Rosebank, Secunda and Sasolburg. Plans are in place to expand the network. How effective is the treatment? The DBC System was developed in Finland over the past 20 years and is used in 22 countries worldwide with a success rate over 85%. The treatment consists of active exercise with appropriate weights and motion. Guidance on how to use the spine and lead a normal life is an important component of the treatment. The exercises are targeted at the trunk muscles of the spine, helping to restore mobility and control. Relaxation is an essential part of the programme. After the initial treatment, you receive a home programme on how to maintain the results long term. The attending doctor can follow your progress based on regular check-ups. FACTS ABOUT BACK AND NECK PAIN Back or neck pain is usually not caused by any serious illness. 50% of people who get back or neck pain experience recurrent pain within two years. People who recover the fastest and cope the best are those who stay active. If the pain is prolonged or recurs often, exercise is highly recommended for pain relief. Members who join Reality Health also have the option of discounted gym membership at Planet Fitness, JustGym or Virgin Active. It also includes two unique entertainment benefits: Computicket discounts with monthly free tickets, and Savings at top restaurants across South Africa. Your family members can join too Family membership options allow spouses and dependants to be full Sanlam Reality members in their own right. This benefit is available on Reality Core and Reality Health. How the programme works Sanlam Reality members enjoy discounts on a number of great benefits. The discount percentage applied per benefit is related to that member s tier status. To earn points and boost their tier status (Bronze, Silver or Gold), members must complete programme activities. At the end of a calendar year, members total points will determine their tier status for the following year. Points earned and tier thresholds are identical for Reality Core and Reality Health (Reality Club does not have tier status discounts). How to earn points Members earn points through a variety of activities, which show that they re financially fit, staying healthy or are simply great clients. It is free to all Sanlam Reality members, and offers opportunities to be rewarded with tier status points for engaging on the platform. Great elements to look forward to in the coming months include completing a will online and lodging it at no cost, valuing a car for resale, and much more. Earn a cash-back bonus with the Money Saver card The Money Saver card pays a cash-back bonus on day-today purchases of groceries, fuel, pharmacy items, clothing and much more. Every time members use their Money Saver card at Sanlam Reality s growing list of national partners, they qualify to earn towards a cash-back bonus. Members are offered interest-free credit (based on what they can afford) but they must settle monthly. Members can also set up a debit order on their current account and simply pay with Money Saver at participating merchants. They can also use it together with other rewards cards, for example Clicks Club card. There s an all-inclusive monthly fee of R50*, but members get the first three months free so they can see how the card works. Reality Health members on the single membership option will be able to book two return flights a year, with discounts ranging from 15% to 25% depending on their tier status. On the family membership option, the number of return flights per year increases to six. Enjoy discounted stays at Protea Hotels Protea Hotels is the leading hotel group in Africa with more than 50 prime properties in South Africa. Reality Core and Reality Health members have access to the Protea Hotels benefit, earning up to 30% discount on Reality Health and 25% discount on Reality Core. Members on the single options may book up to 15 nights a year at the discounted rate, while members on the family options may book up to 40 nights a year. Download the hottest hits with Simfy All the music you ll ever want in one place, Simfy is a great way to discover new releases or reacquaint yourself with all your old favourites. This music-streaming app can be accessed on any browser on a laptop or desktop computer. You can also install the desktop apps to listen to music offline, on up to three devices. On your smartphone, the Simfy mobile app available on iphone, Android and BlackBerry can connect via Wi-Fi or 3G or allow for offline listening. 21 Foods to keep you cool Blistering summer temperatures can upset your body, causing irritability, exhaustion and sleep problems among other things. Stay refreshed by stocking up on these foods to keep you cool. As cool as a cucumber Not only will cucumbers help cool you off, they ll also provide you with a quick, midday pick me up. Cucumbers help keep you hydrated and eliminate toxins from the body. They ease hangovers, aid in digestion and contain almost all the daily vitamins you need. Yes to yogurt Healthy, filling and available in a range of flavours, yoghurt will definitely help you cool down this summer. It s also rich in probiotics which protect against food poisoning and digestive issues. Make a parfait with fresh berries; try yoghurt with muesli for breakfast or opt for frozen yogurt instead of ice cream. A salute to salad Leafy green salads with juicy tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, onions and other fresh veggies should be served as much as possible during the hot summer months. Green salads contain mostly water, making them easy to digest and leaving you feeling cool and energised. Go bananas Bananas are rich in potassium, which helps to regulate body fluid lost through excessive sweating. Other potassium-rich foods include green vegetables, baked beans, dried fruit and cereal. We love watermelon A firm favourite in South African homes, watermelon consists mostly of water, making it cool and refreshing. It is very effective in reducing body heat, contains cancer-fighting antioxidants and helps treat joint inflammation. Keep things spicy Although hot food is probably the last thing you feel like eating in warmer weather it can help keep you cool. Spicy dishes, curries and chillies can stimulate heat receptors in the mouth, enhance circulation and cause sweating, which cools the body down. The last thing you want in summer is to feel hot and dehydrated. To avoid this try to eliminate your intake of alcohol, soda, processed food and fried food as they increase your body heat, zap your energy and dehydrate your body. Page 21

22 Roasted vegetable summer salad This roasted vegetable salad uses in season summer vegetables tossed with feta and basil for a refreshing healthy meal. It s high on taste and nutrients, making it perfect as a main or side dish. What you ll need 3 cups baby spinach 2 small zucchinis, chopped into 3cm pieces 2 tomatoes, quartered 2 cups of cherry tomatoes, halved 10 baby carrots, roughly chopped 2 beets, quartered A handful of basil leaves, finely sliced Half a cup of feta cheese, crumbled 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, plus more for dressing 1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar The juice of half a lemon Salt and pepper to taste Method 1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celcius and grease a roasting pan. 2. Toss the vegetables with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar and season generously with salt and pepper. 3. Roast the vegetables for 25 minutes, tossing occasionally. 4. Remove from oven and place on top of spinach in a salad bowl. 5. Top with feta and basil. 6.
