1 Community Survey 2017 Brown University Department of Public Safety Prepared by the Office of Institutional Research for the Department of Public Safety
2 Summary of Results The Community Survey was administered by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) between March and May The overall response rate of known populations was approximately 16%. Fewer than half of the respondents had an interaction with DPS in the previous two years, primarily for service requests or in-person contact with personnel. Responding officer(s) were seen as courteous, professional, and knowledgeable. The overall service of DPS was rated as excellent by 72%. Participation in DPS programs varied widely with 58% responding that they had not participated in any programs. Most participation was reported in Safewalk (17%) and Operation I.D. Property Registration (13%); most participants found these programs to be useful and informative. There was a reported desire to have more programs devoted to crime prevention and personal safety, as well as more safety information and media campaigns. Crime advisories were found to be very useful and informative by 48%; the preferred method of communication was through (81%). Feelings of safety varied depending upon the situation. Walking with a Safewalker was evaluated as the safest activity (1% unsafe/somewhat unsafe), while walking back to an off-campus residence was evaluated as the most unsafe activity (24% unsafe/somewhat unsafe). Introduction and Methodology The Department of Public Safety (DPS) periodically surveys the Brown University community as part of the Department s reaccreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. The webbased Community Survey was most recently administered between March and May 2017, providing faculty, staff, students, and others to provide feedback to DPS on the following topics: Services Rendered and Performance Rating nature of the respondent s most recent contact with DPS and satisfaction with the response Crime Prevention and Community Relations respondent s participation in and rating of DPS programs; interest in safety topics; rating of crime advisories and notifications Perception ratings of competency and behavior of DPS officers; safety at Brown The community was invited to participate via Morning Mail and the DPS website. As an added incentive for completing the survey, active members of the Brown community were eligible to win an ipad. Brown University 2 Office of Institutional Research
3 Due to the survey being open to anyone with access to Morning Mail or the DPS website, it is not possible to determine the exact number of individuals in the survey population. However, the population of faculty, staff, and students were estimated using Brown s official fall semester census counts, which were provided to the U.S. Department of Education through the Integrated Postsecondary Educations Data System (IPEDS) in Fall The breakdown of population, respondents, and response rates are found below. Response Rates by Affiliation to Brown Affiliation Population (IPEDS) Number of Valid Responses Response Rate Faculty/Visiting Faculty 1, % Staff 3, % Undergraduate Student 6,926 1,014 15% Graduate Student 2, % Medical Student % Sub-Total (known population) 14,236 2,317 16% Visitor n/a 11 n/a Parent n/a 2 n/a Alumni n/a 5 n/a Other Affiliate(please specify) n/a 37 n/a Total n/a 2,372 n/a There were a total of 2,758 survey responses. However, 215 individuals were excluded from analysis for not answering any questions. A total of 171 duplicate responses were removed for respondents who completed the survey more than once. This report provides overall results of the 2,372 respondents listed above, not taking into account a person s affiliation. Responses by affiliation are found in the Appendix. Respondents who identified as other affiliation provided an additional description, which commonly included post-docs or medical residents or fellows. In the appendix, responses from faculty and staff were aggregated into one group and visitors, parents, alumni, and other affiliates were grouped together as "other." In addition to providing an affiliation, respondents were asked to self-identify by race/ethnicity and gender. The table below shows the racial and gender identity distributions of those who provided an answer. Racial/Ethnic and Gender Identity Race/ethnicity % Providing Race Gender % Providing Gender Black (Non-Hispanic) 3.9% Female 59.4% Hispanic 7.4% Male 36.8% Asian/Pacific Islander 17.3% Gender Neutral 1.1% Native American/Alaskan Native 0.3% Prefer not to answer 2.8% White (Non-Hispanic) 59.1% Multiracial 5.8% Other 1.6% Prefer not to answer 4.8% Brown University 3 Office of Institutional Research
4 Services Rendered and Performance Rating The survey first asked respondents if, in the past two years, they had personally had an interaction with a member of the Department of Public Safety (DPS). Fewer than half (47%) answered that they had interacted with DPS. Among those who had an interaction, 96% were satisfied with the response and/or service rendered. Don't remember, 5% Had Interaction with DPS Satisfied with Response No, 4% No, 48% Yes, 47% Yes, 96% Service calls and in-person contact with personnel were the most likely reasons cited for having had an interaction with DPS. Respondents who marked "service" were asked to further clarify the type of service they received. Gaining access to a building, either because of a lock out or after hours, was the service request most often cited (51%). 5 Ratings of the responding officer's or staff's courtesy, professionalism, or knowledge were generally high. Most people who had an interaction with DPS were "very satisfied" with the level of courtesy (93%). Over half responded that DPS had been "very professional" (72%) and "very knowledgeable" (63%). The overall service was rated "excellent" by 72% of respondents. 100% Satisfied with Courtesy 93% 100% Level of Professionalism 80% 80% 72% 60% 60% 40% 40% 25% 0% Yes, I was very satisfied 4% 3% Somewhat satisfied No, I was not satisfied at all 0% Very professional Professional 3% Unprofessional Level of Knowledge Overall Service Rating 100% 100% 80% 60% 63% 80% 60% 72% 40% 0% Very knowledgeable 35% Knowledgeable 2% Not very knowledgeable 40% 0% 22% 3% 2% Excellent Good Fair Poor Brown University 5 Office of Institutional Research
