7 A Closer Look At: Depressed / Isolated seniors Some seniors tend to be confronted with feelings of depression and/or isolation. This section explores seniors that have identified themselves as feeling depressed or isolated. This sub-group represents 18 percent of the national 2013 senior group. DEFINED BY Over the past two weeks, Depressed / Isolated seniors: Have been bothered by feelings of feeling down, depressed or hopeless for at least several days, more than half the days or nearly every day OR Feel isolated from others sometimes or often THEIR PROFILE As compared with The United States of Aging Survey national 60+ sample, Depressed / Isolated seniors: Are less financially sound Are less optimistic about the future of their health and quality of life Believe technology is important, but see cost as a barrier to use of technology As compared with the national 60+ sample, they are also: More likely female More likely to live alone More likely to have multiple chronic health conditions The United States of Aging Survey, 2013, sample size: 4,000 7

17 A Closer Look At: Optimistic seniors Seniors tend to be cautiously optimistic about their future in terms of health and quality of life. A key sub-group of the national 60+ sample are the Optimistic seniors: those that are more proactive in managing their health and confident about their future. This sub-group represents 16 percent of the national 60+ sample. Optimistic seniors: DEFINED BY Expect their overall quality of life in the next five to 10 years to be much better or somewhat better Pessimistic seniors: Expect their overall quality of life in the next five to 10 years to be much worse or somewhat worse THEIR PROFILE As compared with The United States of Aging Survey national 60+ sample, Optimistic seniors are: Similar in terms of income and savings levels More likely to have set goals to manage health than the national group As compared with national 60+ sample, they are also: More likely to be female Younger More racially diverse with a stronger African American presence The United States of Aging Survey, 2013, sample size: 4,000 17
