Brown Director FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Chris Cate EMBARGOED: June 20, 2008, 10:00AM (850) Florida s Unemployment Rate Equals National Rate ~Job growth continues in education, health, leisure and hospitality~ TALLAHASSEE Florida s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May 2008 is 5.5 percent. This represents 512,000 jobless out of a labor force of 9,261,000. The unemployment rate is up 0.5 percentage point from the revised April rate of 5.0 and is up 1.6 percentage points over the year. Florida s May 2008 unemployment rate is the highest since January 2003 which was also 5.5 percent. The state s unemployment rate is equal to the national unemployment rate of 5.5 percent. Florida s nonagricultural employment growth rate for May 2008 is -0.9 percent. The rate represents a loss of 74,700 jobs over the year to reach a total employment level of 7,975,900. This is slower than the national job growth rate for May which is +0.2 percent over the year. The May 2008 job growth rate of -0.9 percent continues the trend of negative over-the-year growth that began in September 2007, primarily due to declines in construction. Our Agency, with the help of the Governor and our partners, is determined to continue providing the essential support necessary for the growing number of job seeking Floridians, said Monesia T. Florida s Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted) The number of jobs in Florida is down 74,700 in May 2008 compared to a year ago. Construction, reacting to declines in the housing market, lost 77,200 jobs over the year (-12.7 percent). Construction losses account for 54 percent of job losses in the state. Manufacturing (-23,900 jobs, -6.1 percent); professional and business services (-18,100 jobs, -1.4 percent); trade, transportation, and utilities (-12,500 jobs, -0.8 percent); financial activities (-6,100 jobs, -1.1 percent); and information (-4,500 jobs, -2.8 percent) have over-the-year declines. These declines are due to weakness in fabricated metal product manufacturing; employment services; building material and garden supply stores; real estate, rental and leasing; and publishing. Education and health services (+35,200 jobs, +3.5 percent) and leisure and hospitality (+16,400 jobs, +1.8 percent) account for the majority of job gains among those industries with positive annual growth. Total government ranks third among Florida s major industries in job growth, expanding by 15,600 jobs over the year (+1.4 percent). The largest gains are in local government. Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In May 2008, Walton County has the state s lowest unemployment rate (3.3 percent), followed by Sumter County (3.6 percent) and Liberty and Monroe counties (3.7 percent each). Alachua and Okaloosa counties follow, with unemployment rates of 3.8 percent each. Franklin, Lafayette, and Wakulla counties have the fifth lowest unemployment rates (3.9 percent each). Flagler County, at 8.3 percent, has the highest unemployment rate in Florida in May, followed by Hendry County (8.0 percent); St. Lucie County (7.6 percent); Charlotte and Hernando counties (7.4 percent each); and Indian River County (7.2 percent). Many of these relatively high unemployment rates are due mainly to declines in the housing market. 3 Area Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Not Seasonally Adjusted) The Orlando-Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area leads the state in over-theyear employment gains (+2,900 jobs, +0.3 percent) in May 2008, followed by the Gainesville Metropolitan Statistical Area (+1,400 jobs, +1.0 percent). Metro areas with the largest annual declines in jobs include Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (-20,300 jobs, -1.5 percent) and Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach (-16,500 jobs, -0.7 percent). Note: These unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation. The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conduced by the US Census Bureau under contract with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis.
