1 Rick Scott GOVERNOR Cissy Proctor EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CONTACT: Labor Market Statistics (850) Florida s June Employment Figures Released Florida s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.8 percent in June 2018, staying constant with the May 2018 rate, and down 0.3 percentage point from a year ago. There were 387,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,233,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.0 percent in June. Florida s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 8,759,400 in June 2018, an increase of 14,300 jobs (+0.2 percent) over the month. The state gained 170,500 jobs over the year, an increase of 2.0 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs rose 1.6 percent over the year. 2 Florida s Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted) The number of jobs in Florida was 8,759,400 in June 2018, up 170,500 jobs compared to a year ago. The industry gaining the most jobs was leisure and hospitality (+41,700, +3.5 percent) Other industries gaining jobs over the year included construction (+33,100 jobs, +6.5 percent); professional and business services (+22,800 jobs, +1.7 percent); education and health services (+19,100 jobs, +1.5 percent); trade, transportation, and utilities (+19,000 jobs, +1.1 percent); financial activities (+16,500 jobs, +2.9 percent); manufacturing (+13,100 jobs, +3.6 percent); and other services (+9,400 jobs, +2.7 percent); The two industries losing jobs were information (-2,200 jobs, -1.6 percent) and government (-2,100 jobs, -0.2 percent). Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In June 2018, Okaloosa and St. Johns counties had the state s lowest unemployment rate (3.1 percent each); followed by Monroe and Walton counties (3.2 percent each). Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (7.0 percent) in Florida in June 2018, followed by Sumter County (5.7 percent); and Citrus County (5.6 percent). Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In June 2018, 22 out of 24 metro areas in Florida had over-the-year job gains. The areas with the largest gains were Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+44,100 jobs, +3.6 percent), Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+28,900 jobs, +2.2 percent), and Jacksonville (+21,300 jobs, +3.1 percent). The two metro areas losing jobs over the year were Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island (-1,700 jobs, -1.2 percent) and Sebring (-300 jobs, -1.2 percent). The unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from Florida's Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data. Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes.
