Brown Director FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Robby Cunningham EMBARGOED: December 21, 2007, 10:00AM (850) Florida s Unemployment Rate Rises, Remains Below National Average ~State job growth equals pace of national rate~ TALLAHASSEE Florida s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.3 percent in November 2007, an increase of 0.1 percent from the previous month. The national unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in November Florida had the third lowest unemployment rate of the ten most populous states, based on the latest nationwide data, and has been below the national average since mid The November unemployment rate in Florida represents 396,000 jobless out of a labor force of 9,294,000. Florida s nonagricultural employment growth rate was 1.1 percent in November, representing 90,200 new jobs over the year. This equaled the national job growth rate for November. Nonagricultural employment in November increased to a total of 8,149,400 jobs from the October total of 8,144,400. Based on the latest nationwide data, Florida ranked third in job growth rate among the ten most populous states, behind Texas and Georgia. Florida ranked second among the ten most populous states in the number of new jobs over the year, behind only Texas. 2 Florida s Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted) Florida added 90,200 jobs since November Education and health services (+29,500 jobs, +3.0 percent) and leisure and hospitality (+24,500 jobs, +2.7 percent) accounted for 60 percent of the new jobs in the state. Total government ranked third among Florida s major industries in job growth, expanding by 21,400 jobs over the year (+1.9 percent). Local government accounted for the increase in government employment. Professional and business services increased by 16,600 jobs over November 2006 levels (+1.2 percent). Construction employment, reacting to declines in the housing market, lost 24,100 jobs over the year (-3.8 percent). It was the first time since 1992 that the state has experienced nine consecutive months of over-the-year declines in construction jobs. Manufacturing (-3,700 jobs, -0.9 percent) and information (-3,000 jobs, -1.8 percent) continued to have over-the-year declines, mainly due to weakness in computer and electronic product manufacturing and publishing. Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In November 2007, Walton County had the state s lowest unemployment rate (2.6 percent), followed by Liberty County (2.8 percent); Monroe County (3.0 percent); and Alachua, Jefferson, Lafayette, and Wakulla counties (3.1 percent each). Leon, Okaloosa, and Sumter counties followed, with unemployment rates of 3.2 percent each. Hendry County, at 7.5 percent, had the highest unemployment rate in Florida in November, followed by St. Lucie County (6.3 percent); Hernando County (6.2 percent); Indian River County (6.0 percent); and Charlotte and Flagler counties (5.9 percent each). Hendry County s relatively high unemployment rate was due mainly to the seasonal nature of agriculture in the area. Area Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Not Seasonally Adjusted) The Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) led the state in over-the-year employment gains (+26,400 jobs, +1.1 percent) in November 2007, followed by the Orlando-Kissimmee MSA (+22,500 jobs, +2.0 percent) and the Tampa-St. Petersburg- Clearwater MSA (+12,400 jobs, +0.9 percent). The combined employment growth in these three MSAs accounted for 68 percent of the total job growth in the state. # # # An equal opportunity employer/program.
