There were 369,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,117,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in October. Florida s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 8,655,100 in October 2017, an increase of 125,300 jobs (+1.5 percent) over the month. The state gained 197,500 jobs over the year, an increase of 2.3 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs rose 1.4 percent over the year. Prior to September 2017, Florida s over-the-year job growth rate had exceeded the nation s rate since May Florida United States and Florida Unemployment Rates (seasonally adjusted) United States Source: U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Local Area Unemployment Statistics Program, in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Bureau of Labor Market Statistics.

2 Florida s Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted) The number of jobs in Florida was 8,655,100 in October 2017, up 197,500 jobs compared to a year ago. October 2017 was the 87 th consecutive month with positive over-the-year job growth. The industry gaining the most jobs was professional and business services (+38,900 jobs, +3.0 percent). Other industries gaining jobs over the year included trade, transportation, and utilities (+38,300 jobs, +2.2 percent); construction (+35,600 jobs, +7.4 percent); education and health services (+17,600 jobs, +1.4 percent); other services (+17,600 jobs, +5.0 percent); leisure and hospitality (+15,500 jobs, +1.3 percent); manufacturing (+12,200 jobs, +3.4 percent); financial activities (+10,900 jobs, +2.0 percent); government (+7,700 jobs, +0.7 percent); and information (+3,300 jobs, +2.4 percent). Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In October 2017, Okaloosa and St. Johns counties had the state s lowest unemployment rate (2.7 percent each); followed Franklin and Gulf counties (2.8 percent each); and Wakulla and Walton counties (2.9 percent each). Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (7.3 percent) in Florida in October 2017, followed by Hardee County (5.8 percent); and Glades County (5.0 percent). Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In October 2017, 22 out of 24 metro areas in Florida had over-the-year job gains. The areas with the largest gains were Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+36,800 jobs, +3.0 percent); Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+28,700 jobs, +2.2 percent); and Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall (+27,900 jobs, +2.4 percent). The two metro areas losing jobs over the year were Cape Coral-Ft. Myers (-1,200 jobs, -0.5 percent); and Homosassa Springs (-400 jobs, -1.2 percent). Note: Hurricane Irma hit Florida on September 10th-during the reference period and caused large-scale evacuations and severe damage to many homes and businesses. The job counts for the month of September showed a sharp over-the-month decline due to the impact of Hurricane Irma. In October, most of these jobs were recovered. The unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from Florida's Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data. Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further information, go to: The mission of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is to promote economic prosperity for all Floridians and businesses through successful workforce, community, and economic development strategies.
