1 Rick Scott GOVERNOR Jesse Panuccio EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: DEO Communications EMBARGOED: June 19, 2015, 10:00 AM (850) Florida s May Employment Figures Released TALLAHASSEE Florida s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.7 percent in May 2015, up 0.1 percentage point from the April 2015 rate of 5.6 percent, and down 0.6 percentage point from 6.3 percent a year ago. There were 545,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 9,614,000. The U.S. unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in May. Florida s unemployment rate has been less than or equal to the national rate for 23 of the last 30 months. Florida s seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 8,059,100 in May 2015, an increase of 17,100 jobs (+0.2 percent) over the month. Compared to May a year ago, the number of jobs in the state was up by 268,500, an increase of 3.4 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs was up 2.2 percent over the year. 2 Florida s Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted) The number of jobs in Florida was 8,059,100 in May 2015, up 268,500 jobs compared to a year ago. May 2015 was the 58 th consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for over three years. The industry gaining the most jobs was leisure and hospitality (+52,900 jobs, +4.9 percent). Other industries gaining jobs included trade, transportation, and utilities (+52,000 jobs, +3.2 percent); private education and health services (+50,000 jobs, +4.3 percent); professional and business services (+43,500 jobs, +3.8 percent); construction (+28,200 jobs, +7.2 percent); financial activities (+16,800 jobs, +3.2 percent); other services (+16,500 jobs, +5.1 percent); government (+4,900 jobs, +0.5 percent); and manufacturing (+4,200 jobs, +1.3 percent). The only major industry that lost jobs over the year was information ( 300 jobs, 0.2 percent). Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In May 2015, Monroe County had the state s lowest unemployment rate (3.8 percent), followed by St. Johns County (4.0 percent); Okaloosa County (4.6 percent); Franklin and Walton counties (4.7 percent each); and Alachua, Santa Rosa, and Wakulla counties (4.8 percent each). Hendry County had the highest unemployment rate (8.6 percent) in Florida in May 2015, followed by Citrus County (7.7 percent), Putnam County (7.6 percent), Sumter County (7.5 percent), and Highlands County (7.3 percent). There was no county with a double digit unemployment rate for May or April. Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted) All 24 metro areas in the state had over the year job gains in May The areas with the largest gains were Orlando Kissimmee Sanford (+44,000 jobs, +4.0 percent), Tampa St. Petersburg Clearwater (+34,100 jobs, +2.8 percent), and Miami Miami Beach Kendall (+30,500 jobs, +2.8 percent). Note: The unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from Florida's Reemployment Assistance tax records and other data. Procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month to month changes.
