3 Lead Article Registered Nurse Continues to be Florida s Most in Demand Occupation by Sam Arcangeli Florida direct employers with the most online job ads for registered nurse were: HCA-the Healthcare Company (1,338 ads); Tenet Health (685 ads); Florida Hospital (570 ads) and Baycare Health (481 ads). R egistered nurse job ads continue to be the number one job title for ads in the State of Florida. After hitting a low in May 2009 with 9,150 ads, Help Wanted Online (HWOL) job ads have increased 90% to 17,368 ads in January 2013 in Florida. Over the year, there was an increase of 24% in job ads from January 2012 when there were 13,993 ads. The occupation with the second most job ads in January 2013 in Florida was firstline supervisors/managers of retail sales workers, with 7,066 ads. The top major certifications desired for Registered Nurse are: Certified Registered Nurse (RN), Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). The top skills desired for Registered Nurse are: critical thinking, oral and written, organization, problem solving, and process improvement. The average posting duration, indicating the relative difficulty in finding a suitable candidate, ranged from a high of 57 days in the Naples area to a low of 32 days in the Punta Gorda area. The average posting duration for all of the State of Florida was 42 days. The highest demand in January 2013 for these occupations was in the cities of Tampa (1,017 ads); Miami (933 ads); St. Petersburg (674 ads); Gainesville (651 ads), and Orlando (621 ads). 4 Feature Story Florida s Labor Force Profile by Lennox Hardin U nderstanding the nature of our labor force provides useful information for planners at the individual, business, and public-sector level. Fortunately, the American Community Survey provides a vast storehouse of information about Florida s labor force. This particular profile includes data from the recently released 2010 one-year estimates. The average Florida labor force participant is employed and slightly more likely to be female than male. She s most likely to have at least a high school a good chance she works for a private sector employer. She probably lives in a household with two or more workers. She spends her 26-minute commute driving in a truck, car, or van by herself. She most likely does not have any kind of work-related disability. At her place of employment, she probably has some type of sales-related position. She typically works 38 hours a week, earning about $40,500 a year at her full-time job. If she is married, her husband is also most likely a member of the labor force. diploma, and perhaps some college or an associate s degree. This typical Floridian worker is about 41 years old, probably white (not Hispanic), and there s Of course, the average tells only one small paragraph of Florida s labor force story. Florida s labor force is actually quite diverse and the work experience of its numerous members is incredibly varied. The average Florida labor force participant is employed and slightly more likely to be female than male. 4

5 Regional Focus Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metro Area The Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) encompasses Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties. The Tampa metro area is known as a center of trade, commerce, education and research, professional sports, and cultural and outdoor recreational opportunities. The region features two major seaports, and two international airports, along with two large military installations, MacDill Air Force Base and Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater. It is also the home of the University of South Florida in Tampa, among other institutions of higher learning. The Moffitt Cancer Center is a world-class treatment and research facility that is attracting a growing number of affiliated life sciences companies. These prominent institutions, along with the area s cultural and natural resources serve as significant attractors to residents and visitors alike. The Tampa Bay metro area is also attracting workforce talent. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the college-educated population in the Tampa Bay metro area grew from 367,507 in 2000 to 513,182 in 2010, an increase of 39.6 percent. By comparison, the college-educated population in the Seattle metro area grew by 31.2 percent in the same time period. The share of the population that is college-educated in the Tampa Bay metro area grew from 21.7 percent to 26.2 percent between 2000 and The Tampa metro area had a population of 2,818,165 in 2012, which was the highest population out of all the 22 metro areas in the state according to the Florida Legislative Office of Economic and Demographic Research. In December 2012, the MSA had an unemployment rate of 8.0 percent seasonally adjusted (SA), which represented 106,437 unemployed people out of a civilian labor force of 1,224,438. December 2012 industry employment in the metro area amounted to 1,175,000 jobs, growing by 21,000 jobs over the year. In December 2012, the Tampa metro area had the largest over-the-year job gain of all the large Florida metro areas and it tied with the Orlando metro area for the largest over-the-year growth rate of all large Florida metro areas. The largest industries based on contribution to total industry employment, not seasonally adjusted (NSA), in December 2012 were trade, transportation, and utilities (18.6 percent); professional and business services (17.4 percent); education and health services (15.7 percent); government (13.5 percent); and Continued on page 6 5

Comparing MSA industries based on contribution to real gross domestic product, a measure of aggregate economic activity which is the dollar value of final goods and services produced within an area in a given time adjusted for inflation, the top industries by share of 2010 real GDP (chained 2005 dollars) are financial activities (23.4 percent); trade, transportation, and utilities (19.2 percent); professional and business services (13.2 percent); government (10.6 percent); and education and health services (9.6 percent). Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metro Area Current Employment Statistics Like many areas in the state, the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSA began to show declines in industry employment prior to the official start of the recession in December Peak industry employment was reached in September of 2006 with 1,243,400 jobs (SA) and fell to a low of 1,103,300 jobs (SA) by January of The decline from peak to trough amounted to an employment loss of 140,100 jobs. From the official start of the recent recession, December 2007, to the trough in January 2010, the metro area lost 120,200 jobs. From January 2010 to December 2012, the metro area has gained 61,300 jobs (SA). 6

7 Fast Facts Florida Tourism Fast Facts (Current as of March 1, 2013) In 2012, 89.3 million visitors traveled to Florida, a 2.3 percent increase over (VISIT FLORIDA, 2013) Domestic visitors to Florida totaled 75.6 million during 2012, a 1.2 percent increase from (VISIT FLORIDA, 2013) During 2012, domestic visitors arriving by air decreased by 0.5 percent and non-air increased by 2.6 percent from (VISIT FLORIDA, 2013) Overseas visitors to Florida totaled 10.2 million during 2012, up 9.0 percent from (VISIT FLORIDA, 2013) Canadian visitors to Florida totaled 3.6 million during 2012, an increase of 7.3 percent from (VISIT FLORIDA, 2013) Primary data collected at Florida s 14 major airports in 2012 reflected 433,000 more enplanements in Florida, a 0.6 percent increase from (VISIT FLORIDA, 2013) Florida residents took 48.6 million pleasure trips in 2012, of which 20.5 million were taken in-state, a decrease of 5.8 percent. (VISIT FLORIDA, 2013) Tourism generated $71.8 billion in direct economic impact in 2012, an increase of $4.6 billion from (Florida Department of Revenue, 2013) Tourism comprised 23 percent of Florida s total taxable sales in 2012, and returned $4.3 billion to state government in the form of sales taxes. (Florida Department of Revenue, 2013) Total taxable sales in Florida hotels and lodgings were $17.7 billion during 2012, a 7.3 percent increase from (Florida Department of Revenue, 2013) Total taxable sales in restaurants during 2012 were $32.2 billion, a 6.9 percent increase over (Florida Department of Revenue, 2013) Total taxable sales in admissions (including attractions) during 2012 were $12.1 billion, a 9.2 percent increase from (Florida Department of Revenue, 2013) Direct travel-related employment for 2012 was 1,030,600, a 1.7 percent increase from (Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, 2013) VISIT FLORIDA s national network television campaign, known as Your Florida Side Is Calling, generated $258 in incremental visitor spending in Florida and $15 in state tax receipts for every $1 spent in advertising. (VISIT FLORIDA, 2012) In 2012, there were 6.8 million visits to VISIT FLORIDA s consumer website at representing a 7.1 percent increase over the 2011 visits total. 10 Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted) In December 2012, Monroe County (4.5 percent) had the state s lowest unemployment rate, followed by Walton County (5.7 percent), Okaloosa County (5.8 percent), and Alachua County (6.1 percent). Many of the counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of government employment. Flagler County had the highest unemployment rate (11.2 percent) in Florida in December 2012, followed by Putnam County (10.1 percent), St. Lucie County (10.0 percent), and Hendry and Madison Counties (9.9 percent each). There were three Florida counties with double-digit unemployment rates in December, down from six in November. 12 Census News Black (African-Amercan) History Month: February 2013 T o commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week. The first celebration occurred on February 12, For many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist/editor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, as part of the nation s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month. Each year, U.S. presidents proclaim February as National African-American History Month. Population 43.9 million The number of blacks, either alone or in combination with one or more other races, on July 1, 2011, up 1.6 percent from the census on April 1, million The projected black population of the United States (including those of more than one race) for July 1, On that date, according to the projection, blacks would constitute 18.4 percent of the nation s total population. 3.7 million The black population in New York, which led all states as of July 1, Texas had the largest numeric increase since April 1, 2010 (84,000).
