Introduction At Yeovil Hospital we pride ourselves on providing a healthy and supportive workplace and we recognise the need to maintain a positive work/ life balance. There are many advantages of working in the National Health Service, and in particular in our Trust. The information contained in this brochure will tell you about some of the wide range of NHS and Trust benefits currently on offer. Once you have started working with us you will be able to get further details from either YCloud, (the Trust s intranet site) your line manager, or the Human Resource Helpdesk on or human.resources@ydh.nhs.uk.
1. Financial Benefits and Employment Terms and Conditions Pay All posts at the Trust follow national NHS terms and conditions, and a number of local agreements are also in place (such as oncall payments.) Subject to satisfactory performance and appraisal, and in line with national terms and conditions, you will progress to the next point on the pay scale on the anniversary of your start date You will also benefit from any nationally agreed pay awards or increases. Pensions The NHS scheme provides a comprehensive range of benefits and, if you have not already made provision for your retirement it is strongly recommended that you take advantage of this occupational pension scheme. If you are eligible you will be automatically entered into the NHS Pension Scheme and you will continue in the Scheme unless you decide to opt out through completion of the opt-out form. Details can be obtained from Payroll or via the pension website at: If you are not eligible to join the NHS Pension Scheme you may join the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) and if you are eligible we will automatically enrol you, unless you decide to opt out.
Annual leave Annual leave is essential to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance and your annual leave entitlements are significantly higher than the legal minimum offered by many organisations. Non-medical new starters to the NHS working full time have 27 days annual leave entitlement plus 8 bank holidays in the leave year which runs from 1st April to 31st March, and which increases after 5 and 10 years service. If you work part time you will have the pro-rata entitlement. For senior medical staff the leave year runs from the date you start working with us and entitlement can vary from a minimum of 27 days to 34 days plus 8 bank holidays. For junior medical staff the entitlement can vary from a minimum of 27 days to 32 days plus 8 bank holidays. Special leave The Trust recognises that there are times that you might need to take emergency leave, perhaps as a main carer, or due to bereavement. The Special Leave policy details when leave would be available, how you can access this and what pay entitlement you will have. Lease cars Eligible regular car users may, be allocated a Business Lease Car. Alternatively, you may wish to apply for a lease car through our salary sacrifice scheme. The Lease Car Policy available on the staff intranet includes information on how to access a lease car through the salary sacrifice scheme. Career breaks All our substantive staff who have been employed for at least 12 months are eligible to apply for a career break. You can take a break from a minimum of six months to up to three years.
Salary sacrifice scheme A salary sacrifice scheme is an arrangement recognised by HMRC where you agree to a reduction in your gross salary in return for a benefit provided by your employer. This means that you receive a benefit and make a saving because the benefit is exempt from tax and National Insurance contributions. If you pay UK income tax you are eligible to join any salary sacrifice scheme offered at the Trust providing making the reductions does not reduce your salary below the national minimum and living wage. Using salary sacrifice, you can make savings on: Childcare vouchers Cycle to work scheme Lease car scheme Relocation assistance Some of our new members of our staff will be joining us from further afield and may find relocation assistance helpful. We are able to provide an attractive financial package to candidates to support your relocation, subject to eligibility criteria. Please speak to our Recruitment Team at the earliest opportunity for more information. They can be contacted on or recruitment@ydh.nhs.uk. Sick pay When you become sick we aim to manage your sickness in a supportive manner, including utilising the services of our occupational health team or the counselling and stress support services offered through our Employee Assistance Programme. In addition to statutory sick pay, you may also be paid Occupational Sick Pay; the length of time for payment will be dependent upon your length of service. After five years of services employees are entitled to six months full pay and six months half pay.
Childcare policies We have generous maternity, paternity, adoption leave and pay entitlements above the statutory minimum in line with national NHS agreements. All our employees have the right to take 52 weeks maternity or adoption leave regardless of their length of service. Our maternity and adoption pay is generous. We offer eight weeks full pay, plus 18 weeks half pay subject to eligibility criteria. For paternity pay we offer two weeks leave on full pay, subject to eligibility criteria. We also offer parental leave to our staff, providing up to 18 weeks unpaid leave for each child up to their eighteenth birthday, subject to eligibility criteria. Cycle to work We provide a cycle to work scheme for employees, offering savings on cost of a new bike and cycling equipment (up to the value of 1,000.) We will purchase a bike of your choice which you can hire from us with the option to buy at the market value rate at the end of the hire term agreement. Lottery The staff lottery is a fun way to raise money for the hospital s charity as well as the chance to win a cash prize. For every 1 deducted from your monthly salary you will be allocated a ticket number for a cash prize fund. Monies raised will contribute to: Cash prize fund 60%, Improving the staff environment 20% Yeovil Hospital Charity 20%
Childcare vouchers The childcare voucher scheme allows you to exchange part of your salary for childcare vouchers. These can be used for a variety of services including registered childcare, such as holiday clubs, before and after school clubs, child minders, nannies, nurseries and play schemes. This can be done through the salary sacrifice scheme resulting in savings to you and the Trust. Charitable giving The extra pennies in your monthly pay can be donated to the Yeovil Hospital Charity which raises money for the hospital. You simply round down your pay to the nearest pound and donate a maximum of 99p per pay period to the charity. Further information can be found on YCloud. 2. Health & Wellbeing Occupational health Optima Health provides independent, impartial and confidential occupational health services for Yeovil Hospital. There is an on-site team, based in Convamore building. They provide advice to managers and staff regarding health and wellbeing in the workplace. This includes physical and psychological health, investigations and treatments in place or planned, and advice regarding timescales and adjustments to support a return to work. Health cash plan We have teamed up with Simplyhealth which provides you with money back on your everyday healthcare including: optical costs ( such as new glasses), dental costs and complimentary therapies. With the Simply Cash Plan you can claim back the cost of these visits up to the annual limits. The Yeovil scheme covers you, a second adult and up to four children.
Eye tests and contributions towards glasses and lenses If you regularly use computers or other display screen equipment you may be entitled to a free sight test and a contribution towards the cost of glasses/lenses. Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) The EAP is a key benefit offering you specialist information, support and guidance through a comprehensive website and Freephone hotline. The hotline is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and can be accessed by ringing You will receive support from fully qualified professionals on a range of topics such as: counselling (available face to face, via phone or online) debt management support stress intervention support career guidance services Citizen s Advice information legal information Health checks As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease or type 2 diabetes. We offer a free NHS health check to eligible employees, which aims to spot early signs and help prevent these happening to you, which means you ll be more likely to enjoy life for longer. The programme is currently limited to those aged over 40, living in Somerset or registered with a GP in Somerset. It takes 25 minutes where blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI and lifestyle are assessed by a member of fully trained staff. The results of your check will be available to you and fully explained during the appointment.
Fast-track physiotherapy services We offer a first class in-house physiotherapy service, which is available to all staff to provide support and guidance regarding musculo-skeletal issues. Friendly staff will talk through your problem in a professional and confidential environment and provide you with support and advice. They can also refer you on to other professionals as necessary. Flu jabs We will offer you a free flu jab every winter and would encourage you to be vaccinated to protect yourself, your family, and patients. Kingston Wing Staff who are taken ill and need to be admitted as an inpatient can, subject to availability, choose to be cared for at a discounted rate in a single ensuite room in our private patients ward, the Kingston Wing. Flexible working We recognise that you need to balance your home and working responsibilities, and we therefore have a range of flexible working practices to help you do this including: annualised hours fixed term contacts flexible retirement options job-sharing part-time hours term-time working When considering requests for flexible working your manager will take account of the needs of the service and therefore it might not always be possible to accommodate your request.
Chaplaincy At Yeovil Hospital the chaplaincy team works alongside patients, staff and relatives to offer pastoral and spiritual support to the whole hospital community. Whatever your faith, or if you have no beliefs at all, they offer 24/7 support whenever you need it. Whether it s for prayer, chapel attendance on a Sunday, our chaplaincy team is here for you. Their ethos focuses on commitment to the wellbeing of the whole person body, mind and spirit, respecting personal integrity. 3. Training and Development Yeovil Academy Yeovil Academy based in the hospital is a multi-professional centre providing flexible training and development opportunities. The Academy promotes equal access to opportunities for learning and development, and is committed to supporting individual learning needs. The Academy supports both undergraduate nursing and medical students, as well as post-graduate trainees of all grades with their training and pastoral needs. The Academy contains a full range of modern presentation facilities, a clinical skills laboratory, IT and library resources and an induction loop system which is available for those with hearing difficulties. Many courses are available to both internal and external learners, including mandatory subjects, clinical skills, first aid, and all levels of resuscitation training, vocational qualifications (levels 2 to 6), management and leadership modules and more. The Academy maintains strong links with several higher education institutions and we aim to provide an environment that encourages and supports both practical learning and formal education.
Appraisals The Trust recognises the importance of providing feedback to you about how you are doing in your role and identifying what training or development needs you may have. To help with this you will participate in an annual appraisal process, which provides protected time for you and your manager to discuss how you are progressing and any support you may need to carry out your current responsibilities or future career development aspirations. Yeovil Leadership Academy We offer a unique leadership process where our managers and the Trust enter into a development contract. Managers take ownership of their development and are supported in this by being offered learning opportunities like coaching, mentoring, workshops, masterclasses and action learning sets, in addition to a specifically tailored programme run by Bath University for some leaders. We believe in being permanently challenged to deliver the best for our patients and our staff. That is why in addition to the more traditional programmes we also offer innovative programmes like Energy Management, Mindful Leadership, Emotional Coaching and Storytelling that strive to address today s challenges in a different way. The hospital has also embarked on a powerful staff engagement process where leaders are given practical tools to get staff involved and enthusiastic about their contributions, such as An Even Better Place to Work. As you can see, we have ambitious goals and we are investing in our staff to make this happen Library We have a fantastic on-site library which is available to all our staff. The library provides access to a range of books, journals, other publications and information and can be accessed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As part of a larger NHS Library family you also have access to many more titles which can be requested on inter-library loan and our team are extremely helpful in supporting staff seek out the resources they need.
4. Valuing Excellence and Loyalty icare awards The Trust icare values (effective communication, positive attitude, respect for everyone, an environment that is conducive to care and recovery) underpin the way we treat our patients, visitors and staff. The annual icare awards ceremony recognises and rewards excellent service from staff and volunteers. Anyone can be nominated and the awards provide an opportunity for patients, staff and the public to recognise those who have gone that extra mile to make a fundamental difference to the quality of care and the experience of patients, visitors and colleagues. icare champion of the month Our staff are amaizing and we hugely appreciate everything they do for Yeovil Hospital. Each month we celebrate outstanding behaviour and achievements with an icare Champion of the Month award. We recognise their loyalty at the 10, 20, 30 and 40 year milestones. Recommend a friend scheme If you recommend a friend to join us who is a clinical professional, specialty doctor or consultant you may be eligible for a generous cash reward.

There is no charge to withdraw cash. Car parking The Trust encourages you to use other forms of transport where possible. However, if you need to come to work by car, you can apply for a permit to park in one of the designated staff parking areas. Applications are evaluated, and priority is given to those with the greatest need. Catering The Trust has a number of catering facilities offering staff, patients and visitors snacks and hot and cold drinks.
