1 SurveyUSA clients in California CA: Governor, Lt. Governor Contests Tied; Fiorina Narrowly Atop Boxer in Senate Fight: In an election for Governor of California today, 08/12/10, Republican Meg Whitman and Democrat Jerry Brown finish effectively even, according to this latest SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for KABC-TV Los Angeles, KPIX-TV San Francisco, KGTV-TV San Diego, and KFSN-TV Fresno. Today, it's Whitman 44%, Brown 43%, a result within the poll's theoretical 4.1 percentage point margin of sampling error. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released 1 month ago, Whitman is down 2, Brown is up 4. Brown has gained ground among women, up 13 points from a month ago. Whitman leads by 15 among men, a 28-point gender gap. Democrats have also moved toward Brown; last month, 64% of Democrats voted for Brown; today, 74% do. 78% of Republicans today vote for Whitman, unchanged; Whitman leads by 16 points today among Independents. Whitman has gained ground in the Central Valley, lost ground in the Inland Empire; Brown has gained ground in greater Los Angeles, where he and Whitman now tie; Brown remains ahead 2:1 in the Bay Area. Question 1 and 2 on this report show the identical data. Question 1 collapses 9 minor party candidates and "undecided" voters into a single "other / undecided" category. Respondents were asked the "who will you vote for" for Governor question once. In the United States Senate race, Republican Carly Fiorina edges Democratic incumbent Barbara Boxer 47% to 42% today. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll 1 month ago, Fiorina is flat; Boxer is down 3 points. Fiorina's support is essentially unchanged among men and women, young and old, white and Hispanic; Boxer has lost small ground among men, younger voters, and independents. Fiorina has tripled her lead in the Central Valley, from 7 points 1 month ago to 21 points today. Question 3 and 4 on this report show the identical data. Question 3 collapses 6 minor party candidates and "undecided" voters into a single "other / undecided" category. Respondents were asked the "who will you vote for" for US Senate question once. In the election for Lieutenant Governor, Democratic challenger Gavin Newsom and incumbent Republican Abel Maldonado finish effectively even today, Newsom 43%, Maldonado 42%, within the survey's theoretical margin of sampling error. Among men, Maldonado leads by 8; among women, Newsom leads by 10, an 18-point gender gap. 3 of 4 Republicans vote for the Republican; 3 of 4 Democrats vote for the Democrat; Independents break for Maldonado. Maldonado leads by 21 points in the Central Valley and by 14 points in the Inland Empire. Newsom, the mayor of San Francisco, leads 2:1 in the Bay Area and leads by 5 points in greater LA. Question 5 collapses 3 minor party candidates and "undecided" voters into a single "other / undecided" category. Respondents were asked the "who will you vote for" for Lieutenant Governor question once. Proposition 19, which would legalize marijuana, and allow marijuana to be regulated and taxed in California, continues to be supported narrowly, passing today 50% to 40%, unchanged from 1 month ago. Ballot measures are difficult to poll; opposition to many ballot measures increases as election day approaches. Voter reaction to Proposition 19 can be expected to shift as both sides begin to advertise the pros and cons of passage. There is offsetting movement among demographic groups. Filtering: 1,000 California adults were interviewed by SurveyUSA 08/09/10 through 08/11/10. Of them, 837 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 602 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely to vote in the 11/02/10 general election, 3 months from now. Early voting begins 10/04/10. 1 [Candidate names rotated]<br> If the election for California Governor were today, who would you vote for? Republican Meg Whitman? Democrat Jerry Brown? Respondent households were selected at random, using Random Digit Dialed (RDD) sample provided by Survey Sampling, of Fairfield CT. respondents heard the questions asked identically. The pollster's report includes the geography that was surveyed; the date(s) interviews were conducted, the number of respondents who answered each question and the theoretical margin of sampling error for each question. Where necessary, respondents were weighted using the most recent US Census estimates for age, gender, ethnic origin and region, to align the sample to the population. In theory, one can say with 95% certainty that the results would not vary by more than the stated margin of sampling error, in one direction or the other, had the entire universe of respondents with home telephones been interviewed with complete accuracy. There are other possible sources of error in all surveys that may be more serious than sampling error. These include: the difficulty of interviewing respondents who do not have a home telephone; the refusal by some with home telephones to be interviewed; the order in which questions are asked; the wording of questions; the way and extent to which data are weighted; and the manner in which specialized populations, such as likely voters, are determined. It is difficult to quantify the errors that may result from these and other factors. Research methodology, questionnaire design and fieldwork for this survey were completed by SurveyUSA of Clifton, NJ. This statement conforms to the principles of disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls. Results of SurveyUSA Election Poll # Page 12
