Introduction (1) Research Infrastructures Examples Singular large-scale research installations, Collections, special habitats, Libraries, databases, Integrated arrays of research installations, Communications networks, Computing facilities, Infrastructural centres of competence providing a service for researchers based on an assembly of techniques and know-how FP7 & RI 3
Proposal for FP7 Introduction (2) Research Infrastructures Objectives Optimising the use and development of the best research infrastructures existing in Europe helping to create in all fields of S & T new research infrastructures of pan-european interest needed by the European scientific community to help industry to strengthen its base of knowledge and its technological know how FP7 & RI 4
Introduction (3) FP7 budget breakdown (million ) Cooperation ,9 % Ideas ,7 % People ,3 % Capacities ,4 % Research Infrastructures ,9 % JRC non-nuclear ,5 % Total: ,0% FP7 & RI 5
Proposal for FP7 Support to existing Research Infrastructures FP7 & RI 6 Main activities: Integrating activities, Networking communication, dissemination, foresight. Transnational access for using the finest facilities, no matter the country, although normally reserved to nationals. Research for improving the infrastructures. e-infrastructures Implementation: bottom-up calls for proposals open to all fields of science in cooperation with the thematic areas
FP7 & RI 7 Example of FP6 I3: OPTICON: Optical Infrared Coordination Network for Astronomy Contract number: RII3-CT Brings together all international and national organizations which fund, operate and develop Europe s major optical and infrared astronomical infrastructures, together with several world class facilities for solar astronomy in the Canary islands. 47 contractors (legal entities), incl. ESA, ESO. Started on 1st January 2004 for 5 years EC contributes 19,2 M out of ~ 26,5 M 6 Networking activities, 17 Transnational Access activities, 6 Joint Research activities (JRAs)
