1 August, 2016 HEALTH AND WELLNESS EXPO NEWS! Mark your calendars the 2016 Health and Wellness Expo will take place on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 from 9:00 am 2:00 pm at the Youth Center Gymnasium. WELLNESS PROGRAM NEWS The wellness program is under way and is available to all full time employees including those that opt out of City coverage and part time employees who are eligible for health benefits through the Affordable Care Act or union contract. Have you qualified for your FitBit surge yet? Well it s not too late to qualify. You can earn a FitBit Surge by completing a bio-metric screening and the Vitality Health Review. When you re healthy, you feel better, look better and enjoy a better quality of life overall.
2 HOLY WALK-A-MOLE! STEPS CHALLENGE Our first wellness challenge is under way and will run through 08/31/2016. Already the 24 participating teams have walked over 145 million steps. Keep up the great work and may the best team win. Don t forget that there are prizes for top performers as well as the top team. And if you missed this challenge we will be having more challenges in the future, so stay tuned for more information. How you can earn Vitality points Vitality HealthyFood Save money. Earn Vitality Points. Eat healthy. Earn Vitality Points when you join Vitality HealthyFood! It allows you to purchase healthy foods at Walmart and thousands of other grocery stores nationwide representing more than 70 chains. At Walmart you can also earn up to 10% off your purchase price on select foods. You ll have three options when you join the HealthyFood program on Vitality s website: 1. Register with Walmart by requesting a HealthyFood shopping card. 2. Register with NutriSavings and link your grocery store loyalty cards to them. 3. Register with both! Engage in this month s Health FYI. Managing energy intake and expenditure: this month we explore the concept of energy balance. Register for the webcast on August 18, 2016 at 12 p.m. PT. How many calories we burn and how many we consume each day are both important for health. It is not a new concept, but it can be difficult to cut through all the different information. In August we will tackle these concepts and try to help you understand what it means so you can make the best choices everyday. We hope you can make it. 3 Physical Activity Whether you re always in motion or you want to become more active, Vitality makes engaging in physical activity easy. Your plan can begin with the Physical Activity Review, then choosing from athletic events, sports leagues, workouts and much more to earn Points. Vitality s three levels of workouts Light, Standard, Advanced account for increased intensity of daily workouts. Vitality awards 5 points for Light Workouts, 10 points for Standard Workouts and 15 points for Advanced Workouts. You can also receive five Vitality Points for Light Workouts when you self-report them. Vitality Goals In the Health Profile section on the Power of Vitality website, you will find a wide variety of Vitality Goals. Select one or several to which you can relate, that inspire or motivate you, that you would like to achieve. Goals available through Vitality allow you to set your own objectives; establish a timeline for achieving them; enter any thoughts about what is or isn t working; and earn a maximum of 30 Vitality Points each week when you check in on them. PLANNING TO RETIRE SOON? If you are planning to retire soon, please be sure to notify Human Resources at least one month prior to your last day worked. This will allow sufficient time for the Human Resources staff to review your retired medical enrollment, deferred compensation/rhs information and schedule your retirement exit interview to ensure a smooth transition into retirement.
4 BRING ON THE SPICES! Are you a fan of spicy foods? Hot flavors may actually have health benefits, according to recent research. Just be careful how much you add. Take a look at these pros and cons: Pro Increased lifespan. A 2015 study of more than half a million Chinese discovered that eating really hot foods six times a week may reduce your risk of death by 14 percent. Weight loss. Eating hot peppers may curb your appetite, according to a Purdue University study that found that people consume less fat after eating spicy foods. The capsaicin that gives food a hot flavor may also increase the body s ability to burn calories. Con Mouth burn. Strong hot peppers can scorch your taste buds, although the effect is usually temporary. The best immediate remedy is a glass of whole milk. Blood thinning. Capsaicin acts as a blood thinner, which can cause problems for those on certain medications.

6 * * * * * * AUTOMATIC REBALANCING A New Feature added to the City of Anaheim s Deferred Compensation/457 Plan with ICMA-RC Choosing investments and/or services that rebalance for you can automate and simplify maintaining your portfolio, as long as you're comfortable with giving up some control. In the City of Anaheim s 457/Deferred Compensation retirement account, you have access to a few different options that help you rebalance: Target-date, balanced and lifetime income funds that periodically rebalance according to a specific objective. Managed Accounts service in which your investments are managed for you. Automatic rebalancing service, in which your investments are automatically rebalanced every year or so. What is Rebalancing? Rebalancing generally means selling investments that have recently outperformed and using the proceeds to buy investments that have underperformed in order to restore the portfolio's risk level back to its original target.
