The NBN is here what does it mean to you? Our Getting to Know You "guest" will be Christine Parkes. Part 2.. Thank you Christine. HOW TO HAVE A HAPPIER RETIREMENT. Retirement can be exciting and fulfilling, but it s also a time of enormous change. So it s not surprising many new retirees find it hard to adjust. We asked Age Discrimination Commissioner Susan Ryan for her insights into making this phase of your life a success. While we may spend years looking forward to time for ourselves, when we retire we may end up missing the sense of purpose work gave us. Even if you love having the freedom, you may find it hard to adjust to a life without work. But the good news is that it does get easier. In fact, people tend to get happier as they age, according to Age Discrimination Commissioner, the Honorable Susan Ryan AO. Research shows people in their 70s are often happier in the sense of being more content in their lot than they were in their 40s and 50s, Ms. Ryan says. If they have financial or health worries, that s different of course, but most people report feeling more contented. Ryan speaks with the voice of experience. Over the last 45 years, she s had an impressive career in government and the private sector, including Cabinet positions in the Hawke Labor government and leadership roles in the education and superannuation sectors. And, at 70 years of age, she continues to be a tireless campaigner for the rights of older Australians. According to Ms. Ryan, there are several factors linked to wellbeing in retirement, including physical health, financial security and social interaction. But it s the social elements Ms. Ryan believes are most important when it comes to a happy retirement. People who do best in retirement are those who have a good network of friends and that can include family, she says. Financial security is the second most important indicator of wellbeing. A lot of retirees do have security they have their own house or super, or manage on the aged pension with the extra concessions, Ms. Ryan says. But to achieve this security, it s important to plan ahead, both before and after retirement.

2 A DAY AT THE RACES On Sunday September 24th members David and Helen Parker hosted a small contingent of members at the Port Macquarie race meeting. Arriving in the 30 degree heat at around our hearty race goers settled into the air conditioned comfort of the Club. We were met by David and Helen who not only booked us a very good table to view the races but also provided bubbly and orange juice. Most of our members required induction and help to master the art of how to lose money, although both Teresa and Ann had wins during the afternoon. Ann particularly got very excited when her namesake horse crossed the line first. Fred managed to learn lots and loose nothing! Well done Fred. A great day had by all. Many thanks David and Helen.

3 GOLF PRESENTATION As is customary the trophy for the winners of the Seniors Golf Day is presented on the day of our Monthly Meeting. We would like to congratulate the winning team of Andrew Moll, David Parker and Marlene Davar who put in a tremendous effort to pry the trophy away from John & Nola Davies last year s winners. The picture shows our President John Urquhart presenting the trophy to Marlene, who accepted this on behalf of the team. SPRING WALK On a sunny morning Wednesday 27 th September three eager walkers met at Dunbogan to walk at the Kattang Nature Reserve out to Perpendicular Point. Along the way they saw a Black Lizard, all shiny with little legs which made him look more like a fish. The wild flowers had suffered from the heat the previous week and were not to be seen. Nola & John Davies and Gilbert Tennant were rewarded with spectacular views down the coast when they reached the end of the walk. At lunch time they met up with other senior members for a picnic and a glass of wine, down at the Pilot Beach Reserve, A very enjoyable day. Thank you to John & Nola for organising this for us.
