3 Preface There were 314 fewer Part I Crimes reported during 2013 compared to This equates to a 3.3% reduction of Part I Crimes reported to the Manatee County Sheriff s Office. Part I Index crimes include both violent (Murder, Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault) and nonviolent crime categories (Burglary, Larceny, and Auto Theft). Violent crimes were down by 47 occurrences during this period compared to This represents a 3.1% decrease of violent crimes. Homicide offenses were down by 83.3% a difference of 15 incidents. There was one homicide offense that were reclassified to justifiable homicide. Forced Sex Offenses decreased 0.5% over the same period last year with 1 more offense reported. There were 45 arrest closures and 59 exceptional closures. Robbery continued to decline; down by 8.9% or 24 offenses overall during the calendar year Commercial robbery reported a decreased of 31%. We reported 82 case closures, 73 by arrest and 9 by exception. Gas station and Convenience robberies reported an increase, up 50% and 125% respectively. Aggravated Assault offenses decreased by 0.7% (7 offenses); the use of hands/fists/feet increased the most; up by 9%. Non-violent crimes continued to show a decrease by 267 offenses. This equates to a 3.3% decline of non-violent crime reported January through December 2013 compared to 2012 reported activity. Reported burglary offenses increased by 1.6% (33 offenses); the value of property stolen also increased, by 7% in Residential Burglary and increased by 71% for Non-Residential Burglary. Larceny offenses, including Auto Burglaries, decreased by 5.4% (312 fewer offenses) in 2013 compared to As a side note, Auto Burglaries also decreased by 7.5% during this period (151 fewer reported) over the same period last year. There were 12 more auto thefts reported during 2013 compared to 2012, a 4% increase. Arson offenses reflect an increase of 150% for this reporting period, we had 25 offenses with 4 closures. The total dollar loss for Arson offenses was $201,346. Due to a change in reporting procedures, Manatee County Sheriff s Office resumed reporting of Arsons to FDLE. Domestic Violence Related (DVR) offenses have increased, up 3% overall (this includes simple assault which is not considered a violent crime ); violent crime however, increased by 12%. Homicide decreased by 5 offenses rape increased by 27% (10 offenses) and aggravated assault increased by 11% (37 offenses). Thirty percent of all violent crime reported was domestic related. The following list is DVR relationships: Spouse - Included in this column offenses where the victim and offender are married by law or have been previously married. This field includes ex-spouses. Parent - Included in this column offenses where the victim is the natural, biological, or adoptive parent or legal guardian of the offender by law. This field includes stepparents. Child - Included in this column offenses where the victim is the natural, biological, or adopted son or daughter of the offender, has been assigned as a ward, or by law has been assigned into the custody of the offender. This field includes stepchildren. If the victim is a child who is not related by blood or marriage, and is temporarily placed in a household, the offense would not be considered domestic violence related. Sibling - Included in this column offenses where the victim is the natural, biological, or adopted brother/sister, or half-brother/sister of the offender. This also includes stepbrothers/sisters. Other Family - Included in this column offenses where the victim is related to the offender in a manner not covered by other relationships in this category, i.e., grandparent, cousin, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, etc. This field includes in-laws. Co-Habitant - Included in this column offenses where the victim lived with the offender as a married couple without legal marriage. (Former co-habitants should be included here.) Other - Included in this column offenses where the victim and offender had a child together, but were never married and never lived together.
