Bourton 23 rd February 2016 Dear Parent/Guardian Geography Department Field Trip to Iceland Estimated dates: Easter holidays 2017, Saturday 8 th Sunday 23 rd April 2017 We are pleased to announce our intention to take our biannual GCSE residential field trip to Iceland in the Easter holidays This will be an educational visit, which forms part of our enrichment programme and is the 5 th time that our Geography Department may be taking a residential trip to Iceland. We regard it as an excellent opportunity for our students to experience life in a very different physical geography environment to the UK and hope that the challenges that the week provides will spur them on to considerable achievements. The trip is being offered to all students who are, or are likely to, opt for GCSE Geography as well as 6 th Form in light of the new curriculum changes at both Key Stages 4 and 5. This is the fifth time that we will be running a fieldwork residential to Iceland and we know that it is a very popular trip so it is likely that a reserve list will be drawn up in the event that we exceed the maximum student capacity. The provisional itinerary takes the group to northern Iceland in addition to the most popular tourist day route around the Golden Circle near to Reykjavik, to explore rivers, glaciers, volcanoes and coasts which are relevant topics in all new GCSE and A level [physical] geography specifications. For A2 level students, the planned itinerary also provides exceptional preparation for Unit 4 Geographical Research reports on Cold Environments, which studies long-term climate change and glaciation. Travel Company: We are likely to travel with Activ4 from Shrewsbury, which has an outstanding reputation in the geographic community and the Department has travelled to Iceland with in previous visits. Their service is superb. Travel companies cannot guarantee a price until the flights are released therefore a definite price cannot be assured for the school and an approximate guaranteed price has been provided. Activ4 is endorsed as a Learning Outside the Classroom (LOTC) company and is ATOL and ABTA affiliated. Activ4 only uses accommodation, excursions and transport with all the necessary insurance and safety certificates and suppliers who have passed the necessary audits. On their trips, health and safety issues are of paramount importance. To that end there is a full and comprehensive Safety Management System. 2 Accommodation: The accommodation on the itinerary is outlined below: Hostel Laugardalur 2 nights Gauksmýri Farm accommodation 1 night Narfastarðir Farm accommodation 2 nights Students will be in single gender Multi bedded Rooms. Costs: The total cost of flights, transfers, full board accommodation, 5 days of local coach transport and activities is , which is due in instalments. We cannot confirm a final price until flights are released in Summer Term (June/July) but 900 will be the maximum the school can charge. The payment schedule I have organised with Activ4 is outlined below: Payment: To be paid on or before Amount First deposit On booking: Friday 15 th April Second deposit Friday 17 th June Remainder to be paid by Friday 6th January Total: The price includes: return flights from Manchester or a regional airport, accommodation with bed linen and private facilities, full board basis breakfast, packed lunch and evening meals plus drinks at mealtimes, taxes & charges, all transportation within Iceland, entry to Lake Myvatn Baths (the northern equivalent to Blue Lagoon near to Reykjavik), return airport transfers from Idsall and comprehensive Academy travel insurance. A whale watching trip is the only optional extra and will be discussed at the final meeting in Spring Term 2017 before the trip departs. Information evening: An initial Parental Briefing will take place on Tuesday 15 th March 2016 at 5pm in the Lecture Theatre. Attendance at this presentation is not mandatory by any means but is advised for parents of students who have not travelled with the school in the past or are new to the school. You may just like further information so please do come along and I will explain the trip and school procedures for running foreign residentials to you. A further letter will be sent out in due course to confirm the price, kit lists and next parents briefing. If you wish for your son/daughter to go on the Iceland field trip, please complete the attached reply slip and forward it with a cheque for the sum of to the Finance Office by Friday 15 th April Deposits should not be handed in until after the parents s briefing.
