Three-quarters of voters have heard, seen, or read something about the boats in Richardson s Bay. Next, have you seen, heard, or read anything about the boats in Richardson s Bay? DK/NA 5% No 21% A great deal 41% A little 34% have heard about the boats in Richardson s Bay Q19. Q22. Asked of Those Who Are Aware 45 Page 46 of 52
Nearly three-quarters of those who have heard something are at least somewhat concerned about the liveaboards. How concerned are you about the liveaboards in Richardson s Bay? (Asked only of those aware of the boats) Extremely concerned Very concerned Somewhat concerned 21% 19% 32% Total Concerned 72% Not concerned Don t know/na 1% 27% of all voters are at least somewhat concerned 46 Page 47 of 52
Voters biggest concerns relate to the environmental impact and health and safety. What are your concerns? (Asked only of those who are aware of the boats; Open Ended; 4% or More Shown) Environmental impact/pollution Concerns for health/safety/crime 43% 51% Homeless on the bay not paying/living tax free Public safety/city services Congestion in the Bay Remove the boats Government and city council oversight 16% 13% 9% 5% 4% Q Page 48 of 52
Verbatim comments describing concerns. Environmental effects on the Bay: wildlife, natural plants, chemical imbalances in that natural environment due to chemicals and human waste dumping. I'd like to find a middle ground where the anchorage community can have access to some resources, rather than just grifting off of what we have for other residents. At the same time, I'd like to see funding from a variety of sources, not just from our tax dollars. The people who live on them are a scourge on our parks and recreational areas. I don't like my kids having to step around passed out people from the liveaboards who have had excessive alcohol or drugs. Drugs, garbage flowing in the water, people drowning in overturned boats, boats ditched, homelessness I am concerned that the City will simply push out members of the liveaboard community rather than accept them as part of our community and try to help provide some services to improve their lives. Q27. In your opinion, what is the most important thing the City of Sausalito can do to improve City services for the people who live here? 48 Page 49 of 52
49 Page 50 of 52
Conclusions Sausalito residents view life in Sausalito positively. Pluralities think the City is headed in the right direction and nine in ten would recommend it as a place to live. The biggest concerns facing voters are ones relating to the cost of housing and traffic. While some of the traffic concerns relate to tourism, many of these worries are a reflection of broader regional trends. Voters offer high levels of satisfaction with City services and a majority approves of the City Council s job performance. They rate their interactions with the City as highly positive. Many of the services rated as most important are ones they are highly satisfied with. They are, however, divided on whether the City caters too much to tourism or offers a good balance of services. While many voters are satisfied with the City s financial management, voters are divided in their perception of need for additional funding for services. Funding mechanisms that tax out of townersaretheonlyonesseenasappealingbya majority of voters. 50 Page 51 of 52
