4 Hurdles o Administrative Tasks VS Budget: belonging to a cluster does mean more administrative tasks a budget several times smaller than other members (core or full-associate): the only SME involved in the cluster has: Budget 50% Funding 7 years project 4

5 Critical Budget o Even as a cluster member, a critical budget and involvement have to be reached: o a minimum budget of 7(years) X 12 MM is necessary o only with one person full time on the project we can go through administrative tasks and be R&D pro-active o Cluster members should focus on few tasks o an alternative would be to allocate more budget in Clusters to take over administrative work from the cluster members 5

8 Context The Institute of Polymer Engineering from the University of Applied Science North-western (FHNW-IKT) Switzerland is active in Composite Applied Research The FHNW-IKT is involved in the Clean Sky Eco-Design ITD within the Swiss-Cluster Budget : 1.Mio. Funding : 50% Duration: 7 years Active in the Aircrafts End Of Life R&D area WP 2.4, developing recycling methods and re-use applications for composite materials 8

9 Our case o replacement of a 122g steel CNC machined hinge from the rotorcraft EC 135 through a 22 g thermoplastic composite hinge o considering 8 equivalent hinges per Rotorcraft 800 Litres Kerosene a going to be saved before 122g after 22g 9
