Grade 7 & 8 Number Sense Summative Pricing Vehicles Assigned: Monday March 19 th, 2012 Due: Tuesday May 1 st, 2012 Name: Description of Task: You are in the market for a new vehicle. You have decided that you want to investigate small to mid-size Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs). You don t know much about different manufacturers or pricing. You want to get the best deal that you can, so you re going to shop around and compare different vehicles, manufacturers, options, and most importantly leasing vs. financing. You will be assigned a vehicle to investigate. You must use your research skills in order to answer the following questions: i) What are the differences between financing and leasing? Which is a better option for the vehicle I am researching? ii) Do fewer (or extra) terms really make a difference in price? iii) What percent of the total price is MSRP, Tax, Freight, Downpayment? Your project will be completed in phases. Please see the attached guide to help you stay on track to completing each phase on time. If you choose, you may work with up to 1 other person (maximum 2 in a group). Curriculum Expectations Covered: Grade 7 Grade 8 solve problems involving the multiplication and division of decimal numbers to thousandths by one-digit whole numbers, using a variety of tools solve multi-step problems arising from real-life contexts and involving whole numbers and decimals, using a variety of tools use estimation when solving problems involving operations with whole numbers, decimals, and percents, to help judge the reasonableness of a solution solve problems that involve determining whole number percents, using a variety of tools solve problems involving the calculation of unit rates solve problems involving percents expressed to one decimal place (e.g., 12.5%) and whole-number percents greater than 100 (e.g., 115%) use estimation when solving problems involving operations with whole numbers, decimals, percents, integers, and fractions, to help judge the reasonableness of a solution solve problems involving percent that arise from real-life contexts (e.g., discount, sales tax, simple interest) solve problems involving unit rates My Vehicle: 1
Manufacturer s Websites: (Toyota) (Ford) (Mercedes Benz) (Kia) (Subaru) (Dodge) (Lexus) (Hyundai) (Nissan) (Honda) (Volkswagon) (Jeep) (Mitsubishi) (General Motors) (Mazda) PHASE 1: Model, Colour, Package Options DUE: Wednesday March 28 th, 2012 Step 1: You must decide which model of your selected vehicle you like the best (Sport Model, etc.). Then, you must choose your package options from the online selector (i.e. All Wheel Drive vs. Front Wheel Drive, Leather Seats, Sunroof, Bigger Rims, Satellite Radio, etc.). Step 2: Once you have chosen your ideal package, you must present this in a visual form (poster, powerpoint, notebook slideshow, etc.) with pictures and details explaining what your features are and why you chose them. You must also include the gas mileage (ex L/100km city, 8.4 L/100km hwy). Finally, state the MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price) (i.e. $51, 999). Example: 2012 Buick Enclave 12.7 L/100km city 8.4 L/100km hwy (fuel economy) All Wheel Drive Enclave CXL 1 AWD (mid-range model) *all features of Standard model (see below) - Heated Mirrors - Power Windows/Locks & Remote Key Entry - Satellite Radio and Bluetooth - 6-speaker audio system with CD & MP3 playback with auxiliary audio input *plus: - Ultrasonic rear parking assist - Rearview backup camera - Remote vehicle start - Heated front bucket seats with leather-appointed seating surfaces - Power 8-way driver seat adjuster with 2-position memory and power lumbar - Power 4-way front-passenger seat adjuster and power lumbar 2
*Colour and Wheels: - Exterior = White Opal - Interior = Ebony with Perforated Leather - Wheels = 19 x 7.5 Machined Aluminum (included in price) example poster *Bonus Features - 2 nd row console ($ extra) - MP3/CD/DVD Combo Player ($3, extra) **You can always print the Summary page too for your reference** Total MSRP $57, 035 3
PHASE 2: Leasing vs. Financing DUE: Wednesday April 11 th, 2012 You must calculate the amount of money required to make monthly payments on your vehicle. There are two ways you can pay for your vehicle: leasing and financing. What is the difference? What is it? Benefits? Downsides? Leasing Cheaper monthly payments that resemble renting. You do not own the vehicle when you lease. When it comes to leasing something, you are not tied down. At the end of the lease period, you are free from that contract. So if you like that flexibility, leasing may be a better option. In terms of leasing a car, you are only allowed a certain number of kilometers during your lease. You may have to pay extra charges if you go over the kilometers stated in your contract. Financing Payments toward owning a vehicle. The vehicle is yours, provided you can pay the required monthly amount until you have covered the full cost. Financing is more of a long-term plan. If you see yourself driving the same car or living in the same place for an extended period of time, financing is what you should look into. When financing, you do not have the flexibility to move or get a new car as easily as you would with leasing. Also, cars lose their value rapidly, so your car is never worth as much as you paid for it. Step 1: Estimate how much it will cost you to lease and finance for a 5 year term. Example: I estimate that to lease for 5 years, I will pay $ /month and to finance I will pay $950.00/month. I made this estimation because I know you pay more to finance than to lease. I also know that when I lease, I am only paying a portion of the total price of the vehicle by the end of my contract. Step 2: Use the estimate calculator on the manufacturer s website to calculate your payments for a 5 year term for both financing and leasing. Compare these in a chart side by side. Your down payment is $10, and you have no trade-in value. Example: - 5 year term to lease = $542.00/month - 5 year term to finance = $809.00/month 4
Step 3: Let s say you want to Finance. You are going to need to calculate the total tax on your vehicle. You must calculate 13% HST on your base MSRP. Once you figure out how much tax you will pay on your vehicle, you need to add that to the base MSRP for a total price. You can divide your total price by 5 to see how much you would pay each year of over your 5 year term. *Want to lease? Your lease payments per month are about half of what you would pay to finance. * Example: Base MSRP = $39, Tax = 13% or 0.13 of $39, = $ Therefore, the total price = $ (base) + $ (tax) =$ $ years = $ per year Check: $ x 5 years = $ Step 4: Next, you have to calculate the interest you will pay on your vehicle whether you decided to lease or to finance. You need to locate the Annual Percentage Rate (APR) of interest on the manufacturer s website (i.e. 5.8% APR). This is the annual (yearly) rate that you are charged in interest on your vehicle. Once you find the APR rate, you can calculate how much you will pay just in interest over a year on your vehicle. What is a better deal? Why? Remember the differences between Financing and Leasing and what each means (refer to chart on page 4). Example: Annual APR to Lease = 4.5% Annual APR to Finance = 5.86% Lease yearly amount paid = $ x 4.5% or = $ in interest/year (half of finance price) $ x 5 years = $ Total interest Finance yearly amount paid = $ x 5.86% or = $ in interest/year $ x 5 years = $ Total interest Step 5: Finally, what percent of your total payment throughout your 5 year term is interest? Lease $ $ = 22.5% of my payments are interest Finance $ $ = 29.3% of my payments are interest PHASE 3: TERMS: DO THEY MAKE A DIFFERENCE? DUE: Wednesday April 18 th, 2012 Is there an advantage to paying your vehicle off quicker? You will compare your payments for a 5 year term against a 4 year term and a 6 year term to calculate the difference in the amount you would pay. This includes interest. Step 1: You will need to i) determine your monthly payments for a 4 year and a 6 year term; ii) calculate the interest for a 4 year term and a 6 year term; and iii) add it to your monthly payments to come up with a total price for a 4 year and 6 year term to compare against your 5 year term. Display this in a table so it is easily viewed. Example: Repeat steps 2-4 of Phase 2 (only this time change your term to 4 years and then 6 years). 5
Term Monthly Payment Tax Interest Total Payment Lease Finance Lease Finance Lease Finance Lease Finance 4 Yr Term (48 m) $ $ $ $ Fill me in Fill me in Fill me in Fill me in 5 Yr Term (60 m) $ $ $ $ $ $ $ $ Yr Term (72 m) n/a $ n/a $ n/a Fill me in n/a Fill me in (included in monthly payment price) Step 2: What is the better way to go? Short-term? Long-term? Does your other monthly expenses play a factor into your decision? Why or why not? PHASE 4: PERCENTS AND RATIOS DUE: Wednesday May 2 nd, 2012 Now that you have the total price for your vehicle for a 5 year term. You need to determine how much of each component (tax, freight, downpayment, etc.) makes up the final price. Step 1: Print your pricing summary from the manufacturer s website. Example: Step 2: Calculate what percent of your total purchase price each component accounts for. Example: MSRP = $40, of $39, therefore the MSRP makes up 102% of the total purchase price (the reason this is over 100% is because the purchase price is actually lower than the MSRP originally was because of rewards, rebates, and your down payment). Accessories = $1, of $39, therefore, the accessories make up 4.5% of the total purchase price. Freight = Rewards/Rebates = $ of $39, therefore, the rebates take off 1.3% of the original MSRP. Down Payment = Taxes & Fees = $5, of $39, therefore, tax makes up 14.9% of the total purchase price. 6
Use the following Checklist to keep you on Track throughout your Project! PHASE 1 - I have selected a vehicle model (Sport, Luxury, etc.) & stated gas mileage - I have displayed my choices for colour, wheels, accessories, etc. in a visual form PHASE 2 - I have estimated the monthly cost of a 5 year term to both lease and finance - I have successfully used the payment calculator, keeping in mind that I have a $10, down payment, and no trade-in value - I have calculated what the tax will be to finance my vehicle - I have calculated the interest I will pay on my vehicle if I were to finance or lease - I have stated which I would prefer to do (which is the better deal) and why - I have calculated what % of my total payments will be interest over 5 years PHASE 3 - I have used the online payment calculator to determine monthly payments to lease or finance my vehicle for both a 4 year term and a 6 year term - I have calculated the interest for both a 4 year and 6 year term if I were to finance or lease - I have added these figures together to determine total prices for both leasing and financing for a 4 and 6 year term - I have compared the 4, 5, & 6 year terms in a neat table or chart which is easy to read PHASE 4 - I have printed my pricing summary - have calculated the % that each component makes up of the total purchase price OVERALL - I have prepared a neat, organized project - I have put my full efforts in (using my class time well, asking questions when I need help, not distracting others, etc.) - I am proud of my completed work 7
