3 An Introduction to the Audit Manual Speaker: Andrew Paul or David Smith, Mercia Group Ltd This is a one day course designed to introduce the audit manual documentation and procedures to partners and members of staff who are new to the system and who need to use it in practice. On completion of the course, participants will understand the documentation and how to use it in practice. Participants who have previously used alternative systems will be converted to, and made aware of the differences in, the approach of the Mercia Audit System. The course will cover the important procedures and identify which are mandatory and which can be amended under certain circumstances. Audit Manual Refresher Speaker: Jenny Faulkner, Mercia Group Ltd This is a half day course designed especially for those who already have experience of using the Mercia audit manual and wish to refresh their knowledge. The course is an excellent refresher on the key areas of the manual. On completion of the course, participants will establish how to use the system more effectively, efficiently and in line with the requirements of the standards. Accounting for Tax Under FRS 102: Deferred and Current Speaker: Jo Houghton, Mercia Group Ltd Accounting for taxation, both current and deferred, changes significantly under FRS 102. In this course we will review the changes to tax accounting under FRS 102 and examine how they impact on specific parts of the financial statements. An Introduction to Tax Accounting Speaker: Jo Houghton, Mercia Group Ltd Accounting for tax can sometimes fall in the gap between tax knowledge and accounting skills this workshop will start from scratch to build an understanding of how to calculate and account for both current and deferred tax. The course will start from explaining basic concepts and move through to the accounting entries and disclosures required. The workshop will be based on a case study of practical examples. The course will be based on new UK GAAP under FRS 102. Course topics will be explained using practical examples with fully detailed calculations and journal entries. Topics covered include: Accounting for the current year tax charge including any overseas elements and uncertain tax positions Understanding the principles and methodology of timing differences when calculating deferred tax Accounting for deferred tax assets and liabilities Practical examples of specific timing differences and deferred tax including fixed assets, pensions, share based payments, business combinations and revaluations Presentation and disclosure of current and deferred tax in company financial statements Correcting under and over provisions of tax in prior years Accounting for tax in the year of transition to FRS 102 Financial Instruments Under New UK GAAP Speaker: Bill Telford, Telford Financial Training New UK GAAP revolutionizes the treatment of financial instruments, and contrary to misconceptions, all clients have some. In this practical workshop we will enable delegates to identify, classify and account for the usual financial instruments included in company financial statements. What are financial instruments? How are they classified? 4 New UK GAAP for Small and Micro Entities: A Practical Workshop Speaker: David Smith, Mercia Group Ltd With the removal of the FRSSE in 2016, this practical workshop covers key considerations when assessing the most appropriate financial reporting framework to adopt as part of the new UK GAAP regime for small and micro entities. This case study-based workshop includes comparisons between adoption of the micro (FRS 105) and small (Section 1A of FRS 102) regimes. The course will focus on the following areas: Accounts disclosure and filing requirements Accounting for investment properties Shareholder loans Non-market rate transactions Deferred taxation FRS 105 and FRS 102 (Section 1A) transition Loans and finance leases Other differences and policy options Needs of the users of accounts Views on truth and fairness All partners and senior staff advising small and micro-entity clients in this area. Transition to FRS 102: A Practical Workshop Speaker: Jeremy Williams or Phil Frost, Mercia Group Ltd FRS 102 will introduce a number of accounting policy changes for all non-small (and, it is likely, small) entities when it is first adopted. Most of these changes will require prior period adjustment. This workshop will consider some of the practical adjustments that will arise and the options open to entities on transition. As well as an overview of the key changes, the workshop will use case study examples and exercises to help participants get to grips with the practical issues involved. A Practical Introduction to Charities Speaker: Andrew Paul, Mercia Group Ltd Acting for charities is high profile work as there is generally a wider public interest in the charity than in a commercial company assignment, as well as accountability to the regulator. It is difficult to know if the accounting and external reporting requirements are being achieved unless you understand what they are. On completion of this course participants will understand what the rules and regulations concerning charities are and understand how to act for charities in practice. Charities: Helping Charity Trustees Meet their Responsibilities Speaker: Kris Taylor, Mercia Group Ltd The course is designed to examine key areas where participants might be asked to advise or give guidance to charity trustees. It will also examine real life examples of trustees reports to explore how charities of varying sizes have dealt with the issues. The course is not aimed towards those with extensive knowledge of the sector. 6 Acting for Doctors: An Update Speaker: Deborah Wood, Moore and Smalley The course will address the main changes affecting doctors working in the NHS in England, the impact of those changes on the services that accountants can offer in the sector and a consideration of common issues about which clients ask. Pension Scheme Accounts: Current Issues and Refresher Speaker: Peter Herbert, Insight Training This three hour course looks at the accounting and auditing issues faced by accountants acting for occupational pension schemes. Practical examples are used throughout to deal with the issues accountants most often struggle with. The course will consider the impact on pension scheme accounts of the new Pensions SORP effective for accounting periods commencing on or after 1 January Content will include: The legal framework for occupational pension schemes The form and content of occupational pension scheme accounts Common problem accounting areas - and how to resolve them The impact of FRS 102 and the new pension scheme SORP The auditor s report and the auditor s statement on contributions Reporting to regulators (including whistleblowing) Common deficiencies on pension scheme audit files - a file reviewer s perspective Regulatory hot topics The course is targeted both at accountants who are new to accounting for and auditing occupational pension schemes and those who need a refresher and update. Property Professionals: Acting for Estate Agents and Managing Agents Speaker: Kris Taylor, Mercia Group Ltd Providing services for estate agent and managing agent clients can be a complex business. Any estate agent holding clients money from transactions covered by the Estate Agents Act must apply The Estate Agents Accounts Regulations. In addition there are membership rules where estate agents are members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the National Federation of Property Professionals (NAEA or ARLA) or the National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS). Specialist managing agents may need to comply with membership rules either of one of the above organisations or of the Association of Residential Managing Agents (ARMA). They may also need to provide a report on Service Charge Accounts to tenants of blocks managed by them. The aim of this course is to enable participants to understand not only what the rules are, but also to understand how estate agents should conduct themselves in practice. A brief review of the limited current guidance available in respect of the statutory accounts of Residential Management Companies will be included. The content will include: Regulation (EAAR) and Membership requirements (RICS, NAEA, ARLA, NALS and ARMA) The interaction of the rules for members of more than one regulatory body Common errors made by estate agents in dealing with clients money Reporting on Service Charge Accounts law and practice Solicitors Accounts: An Introduction to SRA Accounts Rules Speaker: Sally Hutchings, Mercia Group Ltd The report required by the SRA under the SRA Accounts Rules 2011 is one of the more onerous tasks of the independent accountancy practice. Continuing shortages of clients money has led the SRA to look carefully at the role of the accountant. It is very difficult to check that a Solicitor is complying with those rules unless you understand what the current rules are. On completion of this course participants will not only know what the rules consist of and what they say but will also understand what they require a Solicitor to do in practice. The content will include: Outline of client money rules Operation of client account Deposit interest Accountant s report requirements Case studies illustrating workings of rules including examples of: Client monies, cash book and ledger accounts Disbursements (professional and other) Transfers of costs Problem areas The course is aimed at those who undertake the work on Solicitors records. It is suitable for people with little or no experience of Solicitors work. An understanding of accounting principles is required. 7 SRA Accounts Rules Workshop Speaker: Kris Taylor, Mercia Group Ltd The SRA Accounts Rules 2011 require reporting accountants to undertake specific and detailed checks on solicitors compliance with the Rules. It is common for firms to have only a small number of these assignments so a refresher on a regular basis is likely to be of benefit to staff undertaking these assignments. The course is predominantly case study based and will cover the life-cycle of an SRA Accounts Rules assignment from planning issues to completion and reporting. Case studies will be interspersed with formal lecturing to ensure a thorough refresher of the regulations. The course is aimed at those who undertake the work required to report to the SRA on compliance with the SRA Accounts Rules. It is suitable for people who are involved in the fieldwork on these assignments and is designed to act as a refresher/update on the SRA Accounts Rules. Solicitors Accounts Rules Update Speaker: Sally Hutchings, Mercia Group Ltd This course will cover recent changes to the Reporting Accountant Requirements and look ahead to proposed future changes. It will also provide a useful refresher of the SRA Accounts Rules. In May 2014, the SRA issued a consultation document proposing radical changes to the Reporting Accountant Requirements. The first phase of these changes came into effect in October 2014 with further changes with effect from November 2015 and changes to the rules themselves expected in This course will cover those changes and ensure that the Reporting Accountant is aware of their impact. The SRA Accounts Rules 2011 are extremely detailed and although they currently remain largely unchanged it is essential that everyone involved in such assignments is fully aware of their requirements.
