3 Acting for farmers 5 September 2011 Julie Butler ACA, managing partner founded the firm of Butler & Co in She specialises in all areas of pro-active tax planning. She has built up an extensive knowledge of tax issues affecting high net worth individuals including farmers, landowners and equestrian activities. Her articles are published in the national accountancy and tax press and she is the author of Tax Planning for Farm and Land Diversification (1st and 2nd edition) and Equine Tax Planning. Entrepreneurs Relief and small disposals Potential development land tax protection Acting for elder clients - 3 October 2011 Jonathan Wilkey is a solicitor, lecturer and training consultant, and a partner in the Gloucestershire firm of Gwyn James Solicitors, specialising in the law relating to the elderly with a particular regard to equity release and asset protection. He lectures nationally on these matters.he is a contributor to Elderly Clients: A Precedent Manual Ed Denzil Lush (Jordans) and author of Equity Release: A Practitioners Guide (Jordans). Advising the elderly client is an increasing area of practice for many firms and partly due to demographic factors, the growth of this sector is likely to continue. This lecture will cover: The elderly care market Advising on estate planning Asset protection in older age P11Ds and recent PAYE issues 14 November 2011 Pat Nown ACA CTA ATT Pat joined the tax team at Mercia at the end of January 2008, previously she worked for many years with FTC Kaplan where she was a Tax Product Director for the Midlands. She has lectured both for exam based training and for the profession in general as well as being involved in technical writing. An ATT council member for 12 years, she is still actively involved at Committee level. This course aims to highlight the pitfalls and problem areas associated with the provision of P11D benefits and expenses including issues arising in recent tax cases. The session will also provide an update on some of the more topical issues impacting on PAYE system for employers. Specifically the following issues will be covered: Cars and vans Household costs Travel and subsistence PAYR and CIS penalties Changes ahead Detecting fraud and risk management 12 December 2011 Dr Stephen Hill is the managing director of Snowdrop Consulting Ltd, a company with the aim of providing education and consultancy to the private and public sector in fraud risk management, prevention/awareness and data security. He spent 12 years working for a top 25 firm of accountants, and headed the Fraud and Forensic Group. He is a Trustee Director of the ICAEW Fraud Advisory Panel and chairs the Cybercrime Working Group with colleagues from SOCA, The Home Office and the private sector. Fraud affects business and government entities of all shapes and sizes, making prevention and detection everyone s business. This seminar led by Dr Stephen Hill considers fraud and risk in business, and reviews the practical steps that a business can take to reduce this risk. It will also look at other risks facing businesses which affect the role of the accountant including traditional risk identification and a brief look at new threats such as socially engineered attacks and loss of data.

4 Property tax - 13 February 2012 Robert Maas is the tax partner of Blackstone Franks LLP. He is a member of the committee of the Tax Faculty of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and a former chairman of its technical committee. He is also a member of the Council and Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Institute of Indirect Taxation. Robert is the author of a number of publications including Tottel s Property Taxes and Tottel s Anti-Avoidance Provisions. The course will both give an overview of the taxation of income and gains from property and highlight some of the areas that give rise to practical difficulties including: the tax distinction between investment and dealing, and why it matters the taxation of rental income, including of overseas landlords problems of development capital allowances for plant and machinery capital gains tax issues VAT. Business planning and forecasting 12 March 2012 Ralph Tiffin BSc, FCA, AMIMechE is principal of McLachlan+Tiffin, chartered accountants and statutory auditors. The firm has a wide range of clients in the UK and overseas and supports clients with audit and advisory work in areas such as cost reduction and project appraisal. He is author of a range of texts on project appraisal, financial management, IFRS accounting and auditing. Optimising an organisation s forecasting and budgeting ability to anticipate unexpected outcomes Strengthening the forecasting and budgeting process with effective cost analysis techniques Successfully building an integrated planning, budgeting and reporting process to deliver useful financial information Providing informative financial data to the management to give with timely insights for better decision making Implementing specific performance measurement techniques (KPIs and KPDs) to feedback on the effectiveness of forecasting and budgeting process Accountancy update including IFRS - 16 April 2012 John Selwood is a Chartered Accountant and independent training consultant, who lectures on money laundering, company law, auditing and financial reporting. He also writes technical material for publishers and is the editor of Auditing and Reporting. John is a member of the ICAEW's Audit and Assurance Faculty s Practitioner Services Committee and has been involved with presenting and writing the material for the Audit & Assurance Faculty s highly successful Roadshows for a number of years. The lecture will look at all the latest developments in accounting for UK practitioners. In particular it will cover changes to the relevant small and medium sized company accounting standards, which will include the Financial Reporting Standard for Medium Sized Entities (FRSME). The lecture will use examples and frequently asked questions to help practitioners acquire more practical knowledge of the fast changing accounting rules. Finance Bill May 2012 Tim Good BA (Oxon) ACA One of the founding partners of The Professional Training Partnership, Tim is also a director of PTP Ltd, PTP Interactive Ltd and Absolute Accounting Software Ltd and is Chairman of The Tax Club. Tim writes regularly for various professional publishers and is the author of three chapters in Tolley's Tax Planning. This course will familiarise participants with the provisions of the Finance Bill. All of the major changes in the Finance Bill will be explained, in the context of the clients whose affairs will be affected. Identified planning areas and pitfalls will be covered.
