2 Hoops, Smoothies and Lies I am a self-proclaimed master of squeezing the last drop of value from any loyalty programme. Each year I look at the benefits with a microscope to see how I can use and even abuse the system. With this comprehensive guide of all benefits, I m not going to pull any punches, sugar-coat changes or try to make you keep or acquire Vitality. It is simple: costs are up, benefits are down, and you will be able to see if Vitality is still worth it with their 2018 benefits. The point system s calculations will be the same as last year. Farewell to the days of easy points collected by completing online questionnaires. It basically comes down to your health assessment (which needs to be pretty good) and several fitness activities.

3 The two sections below are the main ways to earn points. There are limited other sections, and for that, I will send the complete list as soon as it is released. Health Assessment This is the most popular step to earning Vitality points, and you should do this every year as soon as possible. What I m saying is, this should be an annual resolution. Book for your health assessment at a pharmacy (preferably Dis-Chem or Clicks). They will have your glucose, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoker status and BMI tested. You ll then receive the following points: o Doing the assessment and 0 or 1 result in range points o 2 results in range 5000 points o 3 results in range points o 4 results in range points o 5 results in range points Remember to request an HIV test to earn another 5000 points. Fitness points It s almost impossible to keep this simple. I ll try my best, but give me a call if I lose you. It is very important to understand this as all your reward benefits will be based off this calculation as well. Take 220 and deduct your age. This is, according to Discovery, your maximum heart rate. We won t go into the fact that it is a highly inaccurate method though. You will receive points for the time and percentage of your maximum heart rate trained per activity. If you do not have a device that can measure your heart rate, you will have a problem. Buy one. Without a device, you will be able to receive 100 points for a round of golf, if you have a device that measures steps and you do more than steps in a day, or if you visit the gym. To get to your maximum of points, you need to visit the gym 300 times in a year. I m not sure what your opinion is, but I think it is a bit unrealistic. As a default, you will earn points from the first table (Click Here), you can change to a high performance and endurance athlete which will default you to the second table. You can only downgrade again after 12 months. Active Rewards All the new benefits are based on this system, so it is essential that you have a perfect understanding of how it works. The goal is linked to the same table as the fitness tables.

4 Default Option You will start with a goal of 100 per week. This will increase to a maximum of 800 points per week as you reach your goal. It will slowly decrease if you do not make your goals. As you will note, you will not be able to reach an 800-point goal if you do not have a heart rate device or do park runs or run/walk for life. High Performance and Endurance Athletes You will have a set goal of 1200 per week. Weekly reward If you reach your weekly goal and activated the benefit via the mobile app, you will be able to choose between any small Kauai smoothie, Mugg & Bean drink, Vida drink or small popcorn at Ster-Kinekor. Change Previously, if you and two friends achieved the weekly goal, you would have received two rewards. The new system is that your friends no longer have influence over your bonus reward. To receive a bonus reward, you have to achieve three goals in a row. Discovery calls this a surprise reward and can be anything from dream holidays, local trips, and investments, to retails rewards, groceries, meals and free smoothies. It makes sense for Vitality to change this as the amount of rewards they will hand out will reduce drastically. The cost is now controlled by them as there is no fixed amount of dream holidays to hand out. Expect a smoothie every three goals in a row and you won t be disappointed. Golden Handcuff benefits Be very careful with the following benefits. It seems like a fantastic offer, but you will most likely receive much less back than advertised, and be handcuffed to Discovery for an extended term to get the full benefit. The benefit terms are between 12 and 36 months. FREE Shoes You will NOT receive free shoes. Do not believe the billboards, Facebook ads or signs in Sportsmans Warehouse or TotalSports. You need to join Team Vitality Running R You need to do a fitness assessment R You also need to activate it online and do a Vitality Age questionnaire. Lastly, choose your provider, Sportsmans Warehouse or TotalSports, where you want to receive your discount for the next 12 months. Only after you have performed all the steps above can you go buy your shoes. The cash back then works as follows: The maximum value of the benefit is R If your shoes are more expensive, all cash backs will be calculated on R

5 You will pay the full price at the store; do not tell the cashier you are there for your free shoes. Pay the full amount or the security guard will have a chat with you. You will receive 25% of the value back into your account the following month. Then for the next 12 months, you will receive a monthly payback based on the amount of goals you met in the previous month. Device Booster This new benefit has not launched yet, but most fitness devices should be on the list. The limit for a device is R so unfortunately the benefit is limited. You need to join Team Vitality Running R You need to do a fitness assessment R You also need to activate it online and do a Vitality Age questionnaire. Lastly choose your provider, Sportsmans Warehouse or TotalSports, where you want to receive your discount over the next 24 months. Only after all the above must you proceed the store for you free device. The cash back then works as follows: The maximum value of the benefit is R If your device is more expensive, all cash backs will be calculated on R You will pay the full price at the store. You will receive 25% of the value back into your account the following month. Then for the next 24 months, you will receive a monthly payback based on the amount of goals you met in the previous month. 6 Bike Booster This is a new benefit and not launched yet. This benefit gives you a discount on any bicycle bought at Cyclelab. You need to join Team Vitality Cycling R The maximum value of the benefit is R If your bike is more expensive all cash backs will be calculated on R You will pay the full price at the store. Then for the next 36 months, you will receive a monthly payback based on the amount of goals you met in a month. Apple Watch This was the first booster benefit and works on a slightly different concept, which is a bit nicer. You need to have a Discovery Credit Card with a limit of at least R You need to pay a R activation fee online and take it to your closest Apple store. You can get an Apple Watch Series 3 Aluminium Case Sport 38mm (including Nike+ Aluminium Case Sport 38mm) WITHOUT paying upfront. Fantastic. If you want a more expensive model, you will need to pay the difference though, which is fair. Then for the next 24 months you will have to pay Discovery if you do not reach your goals. 7 Gym booster This benefit is still the leading gym benefit and I think it is brilliant. The benefit is available for the main member and spouse while adult dependants will get 50% discount. You need to pay a hefty fee to join Virgin Active or Planet Fitness. It varies constantly but currently it is close to R If you visit the gym more than 36 times a year you will receive a 75% discount. Depending on the amount of goals per month, you will receive the following additional discount: *This model is only on single club memberships. Make sure that you understand the changes and benefits. Cost of the card CARD MONTHLY FEE Platinum R Gold R Blue R Old Benefits You used to receive between 10% and 20% cash back from a great variety and number of retailers. Through the years, the retailers dwindled. Currently ONLY Uber is a cashback partner and I assume it will be removed. New Benefits You will receive a miles booster benefit at participating retailers. First off, let s look at Discovery Miles. For those of you who spent a lot and activated fast miles - that benefit has been removed. You can activate the benefit for a R yearly fee. You will earn 1 mile for every R you spend. 1 Discovery Mile is worth R 0.10 (10 cents) or an effective discount of 0,67% in other terms.

This is why this is one of the best benefits from Discovery Vitality. The list changes often, but fresh fruit and veggies are always on the list. It is very important to make sure the cashier swipes the correct card. I have to remind them 75% of the time.

You will receive 25% back on a pre-defined list. Please have a look at both Totalsports and Sportsmans Warehouse before you elect which provider you want to use. DISCOUNT Activate online: 10% Find out Vitality Age: 15% Do a Vitality fitness assessment: 25% Remember to quote your HealthyGear number at checkout and check that it is also on the receipt, seeing as they often slip up on this. The following limits apply: R for a family and R for a single member per month. Your HealthyGear spend is limited to the number of Vitality points you have. HealthyCare Another great benefit. You will receive 25% back on a pre-defined list. Please have a look at both Clicks and Dis-Chem before you elect which provider you want to use. DISCOUNT Activate online: 10% Find out Vitality Age: 15% Do a Vitality health assessment: 25% This benefit does not give you a cash-back, but will be converted to loyalty points at the specific pharmacy. The following limits apply: R for a family and R spend for a single member per month. Your HealthyCare spend is limited to the number of Vitality points you have. Travel benefit Hang on to your seats for this benefit because making things simple is apparently not that simple for Vitality. 10 Travel Booster This is a complete farce and combines your medical claims, how much you spent on your Discovery Card over the last three months, and your medical aid option to give you an additional discount between 0% and 15%. Assume a 0% or 5% discount and contact us should you want the complete document explaining the rules. Flight Booster This is linked to yes you guessed it your monthly goals. This is ONLY for Kulula flights and can work very well if you plan accordingly and train like Wayde van Niekerk. You need to activate the benefit and if you reach six goals between booking your flight and flying, you will get something back. The table below summarises the discount. Vitality kids, older than 2 and younger than 18, can watch movies for free at selected cinemas before 7pm provided they have completed an online Kids Vitality Health Review. Activate the benefit at any Ster-Kinekor with your Discovery membership card and ID, or on movies.sterkinekor.co.za You can purchase a movie card for a fee or use the digital card on the app for free. You can watch a movie only once.
