What this benefit offers Vitality members The Vitality HealthyFood benefit gives you cash back on HealthyFood items at Pick n Pay. When you activate the benefit, you qualify for up to 10% cash back on HealthyFood at Pick n Pay. To increase your cash back up to 25% you and your spouse (if applicable) must complete a Personal Health Review online at or call to find out how to complete one. The cash back amount you get depends on your monthly HealthyFood spend, if you have a single or family policy and the points you have earned. Who may use the benefit? The Vitality HealthyFood benefit is available to Vitality members who have activated the benefit. Only the main member and spouse (if applicable) may activate the benefit. When you activate the HealthyFood benefit you agree that your transaction data may be transferred between Discovery Vitality and Pick n Pay to record your HealthyFood purchases. Vitality members can also earn points for buying HealthyFood. What you pay If you have an active Vitality membership, you do not pay any fees for the HealthyFood benefit apart from your monthly Vitality fees. If your Vitality HealthyFood card is lost or stolen, you must contact the Vitality call centre on or apply for a replacement card on You may choose a delivery address that is different from the address we have on the Discovery system. We charge R35 for any Vitality HealthyFood card that we replace and we collect the fee upfront. When we get payment, we will deliver the new HealthyFood card. The fee to replace the HealthyFood card may change from time to time. What products qualify Please note we decide which products qualify for the HealthyFood benefit and may change from time to time. Every effort has been made to choose what we as Discovery consider to be the best quality products to promote overall health and wellness. The product selection process for Discovery Vitality HealthyFood is constantly under review and updated according to scientific and industry developments. Products listed in the online catalogue are subject to seasonal and supplier availability and may only be available at certain Pick n Pay stores. You must choose and pay for products listed on the HealthyFood catalogue. For the most up-todate catalogue visit and click on Discovery Vitality. How it works Getting started You can activate your benefit using one of these methods: Log in to click on Improve your health under Discovery Vitality, click on the HealthyLiving link and follow instructions
Visit the mobi site Call SMS HealthyFood to We will send you a HealthyFood card if you do not have a DiscoveryCard. You must sign the back of your HealthyFood card before you use it. The HealthyFood card is issued by and is the property of Vitality HealthStyle (Pty) Limited ( Discovery Vitality / we / us ). We may decline, issue or withdraw the HealthyFood card at any time and it is not transferable. You must swipe your DiscoveryCard or HealthyFood card If you have activated the benefit on your DiscoveryCard, your DiscoveryCard will become your HealthyFood card. You can use your DiscoveryCard to record your purchases and get cash back on HealthyFood. You must make sure you swipe it twice: once before the cashier scans your items and again to pay. If you do not have a DiscoveryCard, we will send you a HealthyFood card after you have activated the benefit. You only need to swipe your HealthyFood card once, before your items are scanned. You must swipe your HealthyFood card at the Pick n Pay till before the cashier scans your items to make sure you get your HealthyFood cash back. If you do not produce the HealthyFood card or DiscoveryCard at the Pick n Pay till before the sale is processed, you will not be allocated the HealthyFood cash back. You cannot claim afterwards for purchases. Only transactions at Pick n Pay stores in South Africa qualify for the Vitality HealthyFood benefit. Increase your cash back percentage Once you activate the HealthyFood benefit, you get up to 10% cash back. The cash back can increase up to 25% if the main member and spouse (if applicable) have done a Personal Health Review. To keep getting cash back of up to 25%, the main member and spouse (if applicable) must each do the Personal Health Review once every 12 rolling months. If they do not, the cash back will go back to up to 10% of the maximum monthly spend until the main member and spouse (if applicable) have done the Personal Health Review again. Your cash back is based on your discount, a maximum monthly spend and Vitality points. To work out how much cash you get back, we apply your qualifying discount percentage. The percentage is either 10% or 25%. We apply the percentage to the lower of two amounts. Calculating your cash back Your cash back is based on the percentage of savings you have qualified for, subject to the monthly limit per member. 1. Your monthly HealthyFood spend If you have a family membership, you may get cash back on your monthly HealthyFood spend, up to a maximum of R (This means 10% or 25% of a maximum of R4 000 a month.)
If you have a single membership, you may get cash back on your monthly HealthyFood spend, up to a maximum a R (This means 10% or 25% of a maximum of R2 000 a month.) 2. Your Vitality points minus your HealthyFood spend for the year We base your cash back on your Vitality points at the time of calculation minus the total amount you have spent on Vitality HealthyFood for the year. For this calculation, one Vitality point equals R1. We calculate your Vitality HealthyFood spend and your Vitality points at the end of the monthly billing period. Remember that some Vitality points carry over to the next year. We work out your cash back based on Vitality points you have when we do the calculation. For example: if your monthly spend on HealthyFood is R3 200, but the difference between your Vitality points and your HealthyFood spend for the year is only R1 000, you get cash back on R Here are two examples: Single membership (main member on single membership) This single member has not done a Personal Health Review. She gets 10% cash back on her actual spend to the maximum monthly HealthyFood spend of R The cash back also depends on her Vitality points at the time of calculation minus what she has spent on Vitality HealthyFood that year. Number of Vitality points Total HealthyFood spend over the year to date HealthyFood spend this month HealthyFood spend on which we work out the cash back Cash back for the month January February March April R0 R R R R R 800 R R R R800 R R R200 R80 R 120 R 120 In January: The member s HealthyFood spend is R But the maximum monthly amount we work out the cash back on is R Her Vitality points at the time minus her total HealthyFood spend for the year is R0 = R The lower of these two amounts is R2 000, so we work out the cash back on that amount. The member s cash back for January is 10% of R2 000, which is R200. Family This is a family where the main member and spouse have both done a Personal Health Review. The family gets 25% cash back on their actual spend up to a maximum monthly HealthyFood spend of R4 000.
The cash back also depends on their Vitality points at the time of calculation minus the total amount they have spent on Vitality HealthyFood that year. In March: 1. The family s HealthyFood spend is R3 200 within the maximum monthly amount of R4 000 that we work out the cash back on. Their Vitality points at the time minus their total HealthyFood spend for the year is: R6 000 = R The lower of these two amounts is R1 000, so we work out the cash back on that amount. The family s cash back for March is 25% of R1 000, which is R250. In April: 1. The family s HealthyFood spend is R3 600 within the maximum monthly amount of R4 000 that we work out the cash back on their Vitality points at the time minus their total HealthyFood spend for the year is: R7 000 = R The lower of these two amounts is R3 600, so we work out the cash back on that amount. The family s cash back for March is 25% of R3 600, which is R900. We award all points and cash back to the membership, not to the individual. Payment of cash back Choosing your cash back payment method We can pay your cash back into one of the following accounts: - Your bank account - Your DiscoveryCard - Your Discovery Medical Savings Booster The primary member on the Vitality policy needs to choose your preferred method of payment when you activate the benefit, and he/she is responsible for ensuring that the details selected are correct. You can change your bank account details online at or you can call us on We pay all savings on a policy level and not on an individual basis. The cash back payment method selected for this benefit is applicable to all HealthyLiving benefits including HealthyCare, HealthyGear and HealthyFood cash back. We decide when to pay your cash back, and tell you by SMS We pay your cash back at certain times of the month, decided by us. We will not send statements that show your cash back. You can see a summary of your cash back on the Discovery website at You will also get an SMS once we have paid your cash back. If your monthly cash back is low, we may wait until the next month to pay If your monthly cash back is below a pre-set amount, we may keep that cash back until the next month. The pre-set amount is currently R50.
Points you earn You can earn up to 15 Vitality points for every HealthyFood item you buy. There is a maximum of 750 Vitality points a month for each Vitality membership. To work out how many points you get for each HealthyFood item, we use the Rate Your Basket system, which assesses what you buy: When you buy more than two HealthyFood items for each less desirable food item, you earn 15 points for each HealthyFood item. So, for example, if you have 25 HealthyFood items and 10 less desirable food items in your basket, you earn 15 points for each HealthyFood item. When you buy between one and two HealthyFood items for each less desirable food item, you earn 10 points for each HealthyFood item. For example, if you buy 18 HealthyFood items. We sort each food item in your basket into one of three categories. Our HealthyFood experts (an independent panel of nutrition experts) decide these categories without influence from outside parties: HealthyFood : A food that has a lot of nutrients and is low in saturated fat, added sugars, sodium (salt) and cholesterol, and free of trans-fatty acids. These foods are normally good sources of vitamins, minerals and sometimes fibre, and are usually low in calories. These are all foods that are believed to be good for your health. Less desirable foods (and drinks): A less desirable food is a food (or drink) that is high in saturated fats, trans-fatty acids, added sugar, sodium (salt) or refined starch. These foods are characteristically not good sources of vitamins, minerals or fibre and are usually high in calories. A less desirable food is one that has high-risk dietary components which are believed to be harmful to your health. Other foods : Other foods include all foods which do not fall into either of the above two categories. This simply means that we will not take these foods into account when we give you points in the Rate Your Basket system see Points you earn for more details. Cash back payment options Option 1: We pay your HealthyFood cash back into your bank account We pay all your HealthyLiving cash back amounts into your elected bank account every month. The main member can change the elected bank account details online at or you can call us on We pay all cash back on a policy level and not on an individual basis. We need your valid bank details to pay your cash back If we do not get valid bank details from you, we cannot pay your cash back. These amounts do not earn interest. You can instruct us to pay the cash back to a bank account not on the Discovery system. If you do give us such an instruction, this instruction will only apply to the banking details for cash back on Vitality HealthyLiving benefits. You must send us a separate instruction if you wish to change the bank details of your Discovery Health membership, Vitality membership or Discovery Life policy.
Option 2: We pay your HealthyFood cash back into your DiscoveryCard We will pay your cash back into the primary DiscoveryCard account every month. We decide when to pay your cash back. We will not send statements that show your cash back. You can see a summary of your cash back on the Discovery website at You pay tax on cash back you earn You are advised to obtain your own tax advice regarding any benefit may receive in terms of these rules. Discovery will not be responsible for any tax consequences that may arise. Only the person named on the HealthyFood card may use it Fraud or any other misuse of the Vitality HealthyFood card is illegal. Only the person or people whose names are on the back of the card may use the card. If you allow anyone whose name is not on the Vitality HealthyFood card to use it, we have the right to cancel your Vitality HealthyFood benefit and membership of Vitality. You cannot use the Vitality HealthyFood card as a credit, debit or guarantee card. The HealthyFood card is the property of Vitality HealthStyle (Pty) Limited. We may issue, decline or withdraw the HealthyFood card any time. We may also change these terms and conditions any time. Ending this benefit If your Vitality membership ends, you may no longer use the Vitality HealthyFood benefit. However, you may still have access to a HealthyFood benefit in one of these two cases: If you join Remedi medical scheme through the company you work for, you can use the HealthyFood Saver benefit. This benefit has a separate set of terms and conditions and the Vitality HealthyFood terms and conditions no longer apply. If you have a KeyCare Health Plan and join KeyFIT, you can use the KeyFIT HealthyFood benefit. This benefit has a separate set of terms and conditions and the Vitality HealthyFood terms and conditions no longer apply. If you move to one of the two options above within 30 days of leaving Vitality, we will automatically activate the HealthyFood benefit if you were using it on Vitality. If you join more than 30 days after leaving Vitality, you must activate the HealthyFood benefit again. Terms and conditions apply. If you have any questions or need more information about this benefit and a set of the full Vitality rules, please visit and click on Discovery Vitality or call our call centre on
