8 4 Most Common Uses for a HELOC When you take out a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC), you re offering your home as collateral to secure another loan. A home equity line of credit is a low interest rate line of credit that can be a great financial tool if used properly. Here are four of the most common uses for a HELOC: 1. Home improvements The most popular use of a HELOC is to make home improvements. Experts say using the equity in your home for this purpose can make a lot of sense. You can take money out of your home and make improvements to it, which will increase your property value. If you decide to sell, you could see a profit or return on investment. Plus, the improvements you make to your home will make it a better place to live right now. Here are some typical home improvements with the best return on investment: Installing a new front door Installing new siding Upgrading a kitchen or bathroom Adding a deck or patio Finishing out a basement, bedroom or attic Installing a new garage door 2. Emergency fund It's always a good idea to have an emergency fund to cover unexpected events such as car repairs, appliance breakdowns and medical expenses. Most people keep a surplus in a savings account, but you might consider a home equity line of credit as another source of cash. You only pay interest on the amount you borrow, and you could pay the loan off quickly to save money. This strategy can give you peace of mind because you know if something happens, you have a ready source of liquid cash. 3. College costs A HELOC can be a good way to finance a child's college education because the interest rate is usually lower and the maximum loan amount is higher than other education financing options.
