3 Chapter 4 Number and Employment of SMEs in SMEs Overview of Enterprises The total number of enterprises in Thailand at the end of 2014 was 2,744,198, of which 2,736,744 were SMEs, or 99.73% of the total number of enterprises. They expanded 0.76% when compared to SMEs in the previous year. The number of smallest enterprises totaled 2,723,932, accounting for 99.26% of the country s total number of enterprises and 99.53% of the country s total number of SMEs. Classifying enterprises by sector, the highest number was 1,159,715 SMEs in the sectors of wholesale, retail, and automobile repair, an equivalent of 99.58% of all the country s SMEs in the sectors of wholesale, retail and automobile repairs. Secondly, there were 1,036,598 SMEs in the service sector constituting 99.28% of all the country s SMEs in the service sector. The number of SMEs in the manufacturing sector was 495,077 or 98.57% of all the country s SMEs in the manufacturing sector. In the agricultural sector, there were 32,081 SMEs or 99.26% of all the country s SMEs in the agricultural sector as shown in Table 4.1. White Paper on Small and Medium Enterprises of Thailand in

This was a 0.31% rise in the expansion rate compared the previous year. Second, the lower northeast 1 provincial, comprising Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Rachasrima, Buriram and Surin, had 205,010 SMEs or 7.49% of the country s total SMEs, with a 0.16% rise in the expansion rate compared to the same provincial group in the previous year. As concerns the number of SMEs by province in 2014, Bangkok had the highest number of SMEs totaling 489,066 or 17.87% of all SMEs. Second was Chiang Mai with 95,911 SMEs or 3.50% of all SMEs. Samut Songkhram was the province with the least number 5,433 SMEs or 0.20% of all SMEs. 4-2 The Office of SMEs Promotion

5 Executive Summary Overview of Enterprises Classified by Economic Activity Regarding the number of enterprises classified by size and economic activities, the sector of wholesale, retail trade, and repair of motor vehicles and motorbikes had the highest number of enterprises totalling 1,164,605. Of this number, there were 1,162,639 SMEs. The manufacturing activity had a total of 494,298 enterprises, 491,904 of which were SMEs. Regarding hotels and restaurants, there were 281,732 enterprises in total, 281,345 of which were SMEs as shown in Table 4.2. 6 As regards the number of SMEs classified by size of enterprise and the highest ten Thailand Standard Industrial Classification 2-Digit Codes (TSIC 2009), it was found that the TSIC with the highest number of enterprises was the retail trade excluding motor vehicles and motorbikes reaching a total of 804,471 enterprises. Of this number, there were 803,785 small and medium enterprises. Second was the food and beverage service with a total of 260,524 enterprises. Of this number, there were 260,507 small and medium enterprises. As relates to wholesale excluding motor vehicles and motorbikes, there were 198,301 enterprises in total, 197,457 of which were small and medium enterprises as shown in Table 4.3. 7 Executive Summary Setting up and Exit of Enterprises 2014 The number of new enterprises set up in 2014 totaled 59,468, which was 7,834 less enterprises than 2013, equivalent to a decrease of 11.6%. As for the exit of enterprises in 2014, there were 18,968 in total, an increase of 1,533 enterprises from 2013, equivalent to an increase of 8.8% from Regarding the newly set up juristic entities classified by the highest five economic activities in 2014, the highest was the general construction sector with 6,542 enterprises with a total registered capital of 14,784 million baht, followed by the real estate sector with 5,766 enterprises with a total registered capital of 35,017 million baht, and the hotels and restaurants totaling 1,434 enterprises with a total registered capital of 3,433 million baht respectively. As regards the juristic entities that closed classified by the highest five economic activities in 2014, the highest number was 2,498 in the lottery sector, with a total registered capital of 852 million baht. After this came 1,678 enterprises in the general construction sector holding a total registered capital of 13,837 million baht, and 1,040 enterprises in real estate with a total registered capital of 4,484 million baht respectively. Of this number, LEs employed 2,575,949 people and SMEs employed 10,501,166 people, or 80.30% of overall employment. SEs employed the greatest proportion of all enterprises overall at 72.83% as well as among SMEs at 90.71%. When classifying employment by sector, the service sector had the highest number of employees totaling 4,701,144 or 80.53% of all the country s employment in the service sector, with the expansion rate increasing 4.01% when compared to SMEs employment in the service sector in the previous year as shown in Table The Office of SMEs Promotion

As regards the wholesale, retail trade and the repair of motor vehicles, employment accounted for 31.57% of all employment of SMEs Employment of SMEs Categorized by Provincial Group As regards the number of SME employees by provincial group and province, Bangkok had the highest number of SME employees totaling 3,226,050 or 30.72% of all SMEs. Second was the provincial group in the upper central 1 (consisting of Nonthaburi, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, and Saraburi) hiring 1,043,516 employees, and the east (consisting of Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat) hiring 761,716 employees. Nonetheless, when taking into account the provinces with the highest number of SME employees in 2014 excluding Bangkok, Chonburi had 529,313 SME employees, White Paper on Small and Medium Enterprises of Thailand in

10 or 5.04% of SMEs. Second came Samut Prakan with the employment of 455,570 people, accounting for 4.34% of SMEs and Nonthaburi with the employment of 353,203 people, equivalent to 3.36% of SMEs. For provinces with the least number of SME employees, Mae Hong Son had only 15,668 SME employees, totaling 0.05% of SMEs Overview of Employees Categorized by Economic Activity As regards the number of employees classified by size of enterprise and economic activity in 2014, the wholesale, retail trade, and repair of auto vehicles and motorbikes had the highest number of employees, totalling 3,561,374. Of this number, 3,315,485 employees worked for SMEs, with SEs hiring a total of 3,235,553 people and MEs hiring a total of 79,932 people. Second was manufacturing with a total of 3,514,974 employees. Of this number, 2,330,224 were SME employees, with SEs hiring a total of 1,931,982 people and MEs hiring a total of 398,242 people. The economic activity with the least number of employees was electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply with a total of 17,750 employees. Of which, 16,454 were hired by SMEs, with SEs hiring a total of 15,470 people and MEs hiring a total of 984 people as shown in Table The Office of SMEs Promotion

Of this number, SMEs employed 1,621,794 people in total. Second was wholesale (excluding motor vehicles and motorbikes) hiring a White Paper on Small and Medium Enterprises of Thailand in

12 total of 1,402,042 employees. Of this number, 1,264,109 were employed by SMEs. As concerns food and beverage service, there were 787,768 employees, 748,793 of which were SME employees as presented in Table 4.6.
