2 Background Born in 1973, Woerden, NL Lived in Zambia, Botswana, Swaziland and Netherlands Master of Science in Human Geography, University of Groningen Advisor regional development and project manager (Interreg) at Bureau PAU

3 Bureau PAU Bureau PAU is a Dutch consultancy agency in Groningen, the north of the Netherlands working in the field of: urban and rural spatial planning, regional development, policy research, development, implementation and evaluation of (international) cooperation. Bureau PAU works for local, regional, national and EU government bodies and cooperates with both private and public organisations and knowledge institutes. The last 5 years acquired expertise on demographic change.

5 Experiences DC NOISE Concrete actions to tackle the consequences of demographic change within the field of labour market, housing and services as well as raising awareness and monitoring. Example housing: new housing concepts combined with care, measures to prevent loneliness/accidents, analysis of ICT impact on day-to-day life, methods to regulate decline on the housing market, reorganization of the decision making process and financial arrangements.

7 Monitoring demographic change A collection of practical guidelines for monitoring demographic change and how it affects our society in different policy domains. The aim is to be concise and accessible for regional organizations and institutions that experience a need to deal in a more systematic way with population change and related policy.

11 Experiences iage Ageing: 65+ will rise with more than 50% in 2030 Ageing might affect key drivers of regional growth such as productivity, investment and consumption Impact on pensions, health care and labour market Ageing as one of the main challenges: Europe 2020 Right response to the specific challenges? Ageing society: wealthier and more mobile than ever -> potential to develop dynamic and successful communities Increase the regional and economic development in declining and ageing regions through promoting and increasing economic and social e-inclusion.

13 Experiences Research conclusions Policies aimed at physical restructuring are insufficient. The most successful policies in all three regions are innovative and collaborative efforts aimed at increasing wellbeing and integrated with social restructuring. Policies in these three regions appear to be more successful in an urban context. Special attention needs to be paid to policies concerning the declining hinterland, where problems of decline appear to be much more difficult to address. Support from central governments is crucial for the success of local policies. Without supporting national policies, local policies have been much less successful.
