1 Winter 2017 MEMBERS EARN $1.4 MILLION WITH BONUS DIVIDEND IN DECEMBER USU Credit Union members will collectively earn $1.4 million with a bonus dividend in December. The Board of Directors declared the one-time dividend of 4.15% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) in addition to the stated monthly dividend of 0.10% APY. Members will earn a total of 4.25% APY for the month of December on primary shares, secondary shares, Christmas Club shares, and IRA shares. We are thrilled with the continued loyalty and support from our members, administration and staff, said Bill Hart, Goldenwest Credit Union s Chairman of the Board. Goldenwest s success allows us to provide tangible value to members with the bonus dividend. For 13 consecutive years, Goldenwest has returned a total of $9.375 million to members through the bonus dividend program. Bonus dividend rates vary from year-to-year based on market conditions and the overall performance of the Credit Union. This year s pay-out is the largest one-time dividend earned by members in the Credit Union s history. The active participation of members both borrowing and saving has contributed to a year of strong growth and productivity for the Credit Union, said Kerry Wahlen, Goldenwest President/CEO. The bonus dividend is one of the many ways we reward our members for choosing us as their financial partner. It s been an eventful year for our Credit Union, including the opening of a USU Credit Union Welcome Center branch on the Utah State University campus in Logan and a merger announcement with Health Care Credit Union based in Salt Lake City. We are excited to welcome Health Care Credit Union members to the Goldenwest Credit Union family, added Wahlen. With the Health Care Credit Union merger, our not-for-profit financial cooperative will serve 120,000 members and add eight branches in Salt Lake County. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve you and your family. As your Credit Union, your financial well-being matters to us. We wish you a happy holiday season and prosperous New Year shared with the people who bring joy and meaning to your life!
2 GOLDENWEST AND HEALTH CARE CREDIT UNIONS ANNOUNCE INTENT TO MERGE On October 20th, the Board of Directors from Goldenwest Credit Union and Health Care Credit Union announced their intent to merge the two Utah-based Credit Unions. With the merger, Goldenwest s assets will grow to $1.27 billion and membership will exceed 120,000. Greater branch convenience will be available to all Credit Union members with a combined 36 locations from Logan to St George. We are delighted for this opportunity to expand the Goldenwest branch footprint in Salt Lake County, stated Kerry Wahlen, Goldenwest President/CEO. The merger complements our longterm growth strategy to better serve our members who live and work throughout the state of Utah. Goldenwest currently operates three branches in Salt Lake County with locations in Sandy, South Jordan and Herriman. A fourth branch is under construction in The Highlands shopping development in West Jordan, with an expected completion date in late January. The merger will add eight Salt Lake County offices to the Goldenwest branch network. The primary motivations for Health Care Credit Union to merge with Goldenwest include product expansion and increased access for members to accounts through a larger branch network, including the online and mobile branches. This merger will provide Health Care Credit Union members with the best financial products and services available in the market today and into the future, stated Scot Baumgartner, President/CEO of Health Care Credit Union. In particular, we re excited to significantly increase our technology-based services through Goldenwest s popular online and mobile banking platforms. As both Credit Unions are deemed financially secure, the merger is considered strategic in nature. Our Board considered several partners for a merger while we searched for a Credit Union with a strong commitment to providing high value for its members, said Randy Evans, Chairman of the Board for Health Care Credit Union. We re confident that Goldenwest will offer Health Care Credit Union members quality products and toprated service. Health Care Credit Union was established in 1950 at LDS Hospital. The Credit Union currently holds $75 million in assets, serves 7,600 members, and operates eight branches. We believe this merger is favorable for both Credit Unions, added Bill Hart, Board Chairman at Goldenwest. We enthusiastically welcome Health Care members to our Credit Union family, and invite Goldenwest members to enjoy the convenience of the additional branches in Salt Lake County. The merger is subject to final approval from regulators following a vote from Health Care Credit Union members in mid-december. Following final approval from HCCU members and regulators, the merger of the two credit unions is anticipated to take place in early January, with the operating systems merger scheduled for May 1, USE YOUR AGGIE VISA CARD FOR HASSLE-FREE TRAVEL REWARDS You never need to worry about the stress of redeeming points or miles for your desired travel plans again! 4 MEMBERS FINANCIAL SERVICES TIME CAN BE A STRONG ALLY IN SAVING FOR RETIREMENT Father Time doesn t always have a good reputation, particularly when it comes to birthdays. But when it comes to saving for retirement, time might be one of your strongest allies. Why? When time teams up with the growth potential of compounding, the results can be powerful. Time and money can work together The premise behind compounding is fairly simple. Your retirement plan contributions are deducted from your paycheck and invested either in the options you select or in your plan s default investments. Your contribution dollars may earn returns from those investments, then those returns may earn returns themselves--and so on. That s compounding. Compounding in action To see the process at work, consider the following hypothetical example: Say you invest $1,000 and earn a return of 7%--or $70- -in one year. You now have $1,070 in your account. In year two, that $1,070 earns another 7%, and this time the amount earned is $74.90, bringing the total value of your account to $1, Over time, if your account continues to earn positive returns, the process can gather steam and add up. Now consider how compounding might work in your retirement plan. Say $120 is automatically deducted from your paycheck and contributed to your plan account on a biweekly basis. Assuming you earn a 7% rate of return each year, after 10 years, you would have invested $31,200 and your account would be worth $45,100. That s not too bad. If you kept investing the same amount, after 20 years, you d have invested $62,400 and your account would be worth $135,835. And after just 10 more years--for a total investment time horizon of 30 years and a total invested amount of $93,600--you d have $318,381. That s the power of compounding at work. Keep in mind that these examples are hypothetical, for illustrative purposes only, and do not represent the performance of any actual investment. Returns will change from year to year, and are not guaranteed. You may also lose money in your retirement plan investments. But that s why when you re saving for retirement, it s important to stay focused on long-term results. Also, these examples do not take into account plan fees, which will impact total returns, and taxes. When you withdraw money from your traditional (i.e., non-roth) retirement plan account, you will have to pay taxes on your withdrawals at then-current rates. Early withdrawals before age 59 (age 55 for certain distributions from employer plans) may be subject to a 10% penalty tax, unless an exception applies. Nonqualified withdrawals from a Roth account may also be subject to regular income and penalty taxes (on the earnings only--you receive your Roth contributions tax free).
