Retail sales in the period Tanuary to May 1952 amounted to $4,287,608,000, 6.1% and 24.4% above sales in the corresponding periods in 1951 and TOTAL RETAIL TRADE IN CANADA % Change Month /1951 $ $, 000 First Quarter 2,249,618 2,314, April 859, , May 931,116 1,053, ,1 TOTAL 4,039,962 4,287, All geographic divisions followed the national trend, both for the month of May and for the 5 month cumulative period. Increases over May 1951 ranged from 3.1% in Saskatchewan to 2 1.2% in British Columbia; cumulative gains varied from 0.5% and 3.7% in Manitoba and Ontario to 10.4% and 18.6% in Alberta and Saskatchewan respectively. Four out of 21 trades reported declines in retail sales in May 1952 compared with the same month a year ago. These were lumber and building material dealers (-6. 3%), meat stores (-2.4%), men's clothing stores (-2.1%) and hardware stores ( )..&ie i.ige.. gain TOTAL RETAIL TRADE N CANADA MILLIONS Ot DOLLANS over May 1951 was recorded by furniture stores (33.4%). A comparison of department store sales for May 1952 and 1951 and of stocks for April 30, 1952 and 1951 are given in the table on page 10. Total department atore sales were up 9.2% over May 1951 with 27 out of 30 departments having increased sales volume.
