In tune with the major concerns in the market, the conference will open with a presentation from Finansinspektionen, the Swedish regulator, which will highlight the implementation and implications of European laws arising from the regulation on packaged retail and insurance-based investment products (Priips), with a special emphasis on the key investor information document (Kiid), and also the latest directive on markets in financial instruments (Mifid 2). Throughout the day, the discussion of the effect of introducing bans on upfront fees will appear as a constant theme, reflecting the importance that this new piece of legislation is likely to have on the sale of structured products, particularly in Sweden. The other main international and European regulatory guidance that could profoundly alter the way in which products are created, based on benchmark index regulations, will be covered in depth in the index and strategy panel. The new, proposed benchmark rules could mostly affect strategy indices, which therefore will include structured products based on risk premia or factors, and they could also have a dramatic effect on institutional investors, especially the Nordic pension funds that have been such enthusiastic adopters of these strategies. To offer some insight into this world, we offer an academic view from a former senior structured products practitioner. Those clamouring for some kind of investment exposure to sustainability and the environment should attend a dedicated session, which is followed by panels that cater to the fundamentals of distribution, listed products and technology. Our line-up of expert panellists from across the industry will come together to provide an informative and educational day of lively discussions, with the conference culminating in a Leaders panel, during which the major topics of the day will be discussed and debated by a panel of senior professionals who lead structured products for the region.
