3 Page 3 Hunterdon County Department of Human Services DIVISION OF SENIOR, DISABILITIES AND VETERANS SERVICES An ADRC (Aging and Disabilities Resource Connection) As we all know, this Winter has forced many of us to stay at home. But now, Spring is coming, and our thoughts turn to other activities. Following is a listing of some offerings from your Senior Center which will stimulate both mind and body. All sessions are presented at the Hunterdon County Division of Senior, Disabilities & Veterans Services, 4 Gauntt Place, Building 1, Flemington, NJ SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SNAP) SNAP helps low-income people buy the food they need for good health. These benefits are not cash, but are provided on an electronic card that is used like an ATM or bank card. It enables one to buy food at most grocery stores. To get SNAP benefits, your income and other resources have to be under certain limits. Checking and savings accounts are considered resources, but if you own your own home, it is not counted as a resource. You must have a social security number to apply. Application forms must be filled out, and can be obtained at your local SNAP office, or printed off your computer from the State's web site at snap/outreach/map.htm. To find out the resource limits and for more complete information please call LOW INCOME HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LIHEAP) LIHEAP is a federally funded program that helps low-income households pay for heating costs (includes: electric, natural gas, oil and other deliverable fuels). Even if your heat is included in your rent, you may qualify. LIHEAP grants are also available for medically necessary cooling costs. Applications are accepted from October 1 through April 30. In addition to the LIHEAP program, The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has created a Universal Service Fund (USF) to provide assistance for payment of electric and natural gas costs. Please go to the website: and click on "energy assistance programs" or call toll free: (USF) OR (LIHEAP) for eligibility requirements and additional information. SENIOR GOLD PRESCRIPTION DISCOUNT PROGRAM Senior Gold is a prescription discount program for elderly and disabled New Jersey residents. You are eligible for Senior Gold if you meet the following eligibility requirements: 1) You are a New Jersey resident; 2) Your income is between $26,130 and $36,130 if you are single, or between $32,037 and $42,037 of combined income if you are married; 3) You are at least 65 years of age and enrolled in Medicare Part D, if eligible. For further information, please call These Federally and State funded programs are for those who meet the eligibility requirements, and the benefits are very worthwhile.
