Page 2 WEIGH-IN INFORMATION: BEEF WEIGH-IN Saturday, Dec 15 8 : 3 0 a. m. n o o n K a l o n a S a l e B a r n ( s e e g u i d e l i n e s o n i n s e r t ) Spring Livestock Weigh-In Dates Saturday, March 23 - Derby Swine Saturday, May 4 - Goat/Sheep Held at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Watch for more details as the time draws near! Ak-Sar-Ben Fees Ak-Sar-Ben will no longer be partnering with Iowa 4-H to collect DNA samples. However, Washington County will continue to help with this step by collecting DNA samples at the beef, sheep & goat weigh-in. There is a $5/head fee to nominate animals for Ak-Sar-Ben. IMPORTANT 4honline information for all livestock exhibitors!!! FEB 1: All market beef weights must be approved by members after the county office enters the weigh-in results. MAY 15: ALL animal identifications (106 forms) will be done through 4honline. Members must get enrolled through that system. If showing, purebred breeding beef YOU MUST have the tattoo and registration numbers by May 15 OR they will be in the commercial class. NO LATE ENTRIES! FINAL CALL for those interested in... Share-a-Calf Class. A market calf is supplied to 4-H er at beef weigh-in by a cattlemen. Market price is set at that time but 4-H er pays the cattlemen after the fair. It s a great opportunity to partner with a cattlemen for support and expertise! FINAL CALL application papers will be accepted until Dec 7 at the Extension Office. Stop in or call ASAP with any questions or interest! AGAIN this year... Single Source Commercial Swine Class will be offered. In this unique class, all pigs from this class come from one swine producer in the county and only compete against each other. 4-H ers can get up to four pigs from them, show up to three in their own derby classes, and pay for the pigs after the fair. Watch for sign up information in February/March! SAVE THE DATE for FSQA : This year ONE hands-on FSQA training will be offered in Washington County. It will be a combined effort with all of Region 15 (Iowa, Johnson, Keokuk Co) to offer a more hands-on, and more valuable learning experience region wide. SAVE THE DATE: February 23 9 a.m.-11 a.m. Washington Co. Fairgrounds Attendance is REQUIRED for all junior members who will show animals at the fair (any animal that potentially will enter the food chain). Intermediates and Senior livestock members are invited to attend this training OR they must pass the FSQA test before 2013 county fair. An alternate training is set for March 11 from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. at Johnson County Fairgrounds. 4-H Family Focus Newsletter
3 Pioneer Community Improvement Grant Pioneer Hi-Bred International is again offering a grant to help 4-H clubs get started on community projects. Grants range from $25 to $250. If you have clubs with community improvement ideas, encourage them to submit an application. Information and applications are available at the Extension Office and on the web at ts. Applications are due to the Extension Office by January 15. ISU College of Ag & Life Sciences Freshman Scholarships Freshman students entering the ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (2013) are eligible to apply for Scholarships for Excellence in Agriculture and Life Sciences. Application deadline is Jan. 15. Three scholarships are awarded annually for study at an accredited two or four-year college or university anywhere in the country. The application deadline is March 31, For application materials, click on student award at The citizenship and leadership qualities and actions required and expected to receive this award make for EX- CELLECT 4-H projects as well! 4-H Enrollment Assistance: The Iowa 4-H Foundation is offering scholarships to those who may not be able to afford 4-H enrollment fees. If your family would like to apply for these scholarships contact the Extension Office. It s a one page form and you are not required to give financial information. Please contact the Extension Office if you know 4-H ers who would qualify for this grant. Orschelns Offers Discount Purchase 4-H supplies at Orschelns and receive a 10% discount as a 4-H member. 4 The ELITE Survival Experience As a survivor builds his skills you will learn how to become an elite 4-H member! Who: All interested 6th-8th graders Where: ELITE Headquarters (Washington Co. Ext. Office) When: January 2, 2013, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Cost: Free. We will feed you lunch! Join the experience to develop the skills of an ELITE 4-H member. Please register by Dec 27 by calling the Extension Office. Registrations are still being accepted for the Citizenship Washington Focus trip for youth in grades There are two different trips planned in June. The total cost of the trip is $ Washington County will most likely provide financial assistance. Registrations and down payments are due by Dec 15. This is a great opportunity to meet new people, visit our nation s capital, and have fun! If interested, please contact the Extension Office as soon as possible. More information can be found at County-Wide Events County Council has started their preparations for winter county-wide activities. Dates are not set yet, but keep watching for these fun activities to come!!! 4-H Family Skating Party-January 4-H New Member Fire-Up!-February 4-H Dodgeball Tournament-March Pancake Breakfast 4-H Fundraiser - April 20 IJBBA Open Cattle Show-April 20 Iowa Pork Youth Team The Iowa Pork Youth Team is open to any youth from 9th grade through age 20 who has an interest in being involved in the pork industry. It will provide youth with opportunities to participate in activities at the Iowa Pork Congress; Pork Youth Conference held during the summer; Pork 101 workshops; promotional and educational activities at the local level and at the state level, such as the Iowa State Fair; along with a PEP (Pork Education & Promotion) program that rewards youth for their PEP activities. 5 YOU MUST RE-ENROLL ONLINE TO CONTINUE RECEIVING 4-H INFORMATION. We will no longer send 4-H mail to families not enrolled in 4-H for this year!!!!!!!! Re-enrolling with 4hOnline Logging In 1. Open a web browser and type in 2. You can click on the blue sentence, Find more information about enrolling using 4hOnline to get picture views of these step-by-step instructions. 3. Enter the family address you provided to the Extension office last year (if you have never given the Extension office your , call ASAP to get it entered into the system you cannot log in without an address). The office can help get you an if you need! 4. Click I forgot my password. DO NOT CLICK I need to set up a profile. Anyone who has been in 4-H or had a family member in 4-H from 2009 to the present already has a profile. 5. Click Send my password. 6. Leave this window open. Check your . There should be one from 4hOnline with your temporary password. Be sure to check your spam. 7. Return to the 4hOnline page and click I have a profile. Enter your temporary password exactly as it was sent in the . It is case sensitive! Perhaps copy/paste it to eliminate errors. 8. Click log in. 9. Choose a new password you will be remember. Write it down! Enter it twice when prompted to update your password, then click continue. This is now your password every time you log on to 4hOnline. Now you will see your family information, plus a list of members and leaders associated with this family name and address. 1. Click Edit Family if any of the information listed there is incorrect. Change and update as needed. 2. If everything in the family section is correct, you are ready to re-enroll! Click edit to the right of the person you want to start with. 3. Scroll all the way to the bottom of that screen and click on Enroll for Edit information as needed. If this member has his or her own address, you can enter that on top. s will then go to both the family and the personal . This is ideal. The more contact, the better. 5. Please remember to list emergency contact information. 6. Second Household fields are there for children with divorced parents but both want information sent to them. If a parent is not involved, there is no need to fill out those fields. 7. Answer the statistical questions, make sure the school information is correct, and click Continue. 8. The Additional Information page replaces sheets you formerly had to sign and turn in. Please read, mark, and sign as needed, then click Continue. The next page has two tabs you must work through, CLUBS and PROJECTS. 1. Verify you are in the correct club. If you are also involved in Shooting Sports, be sure to add that to your list. Select it in the drop-down menu, then click Add Club. Then click Continue. 2. Next, select what projects you are interested in for You can choose as many as you want and can add and delete up until May. This is an important step, so you get updated information on your project areas for special workshops, deadlines, etc. LIVESTOCK MUST BE SELECTED BY MAY 15 FOR YOU TO SHOW AT THE FAIR! 3. When you have finished selecting projects, click Submit Enrollment. You are done! Now what? 1. Your enrollment status will show as Pending on your family member list. Repeat as needed until every member and leader you want to enroll for is listed as Pending. 2. If your status says, Incomplete, click the edit button again to find what you missed. Submit enrollment again. 3. When you are finished, click log out in the upper right corner. 4. You will get an when the county office approves your enrollment. 5. You may return to your profile any time during the year using your address and the password you chose. Please keep info. up-to-date! Dec.-Jan Page 5

Attention: Parents to 1st and 2nd Year Members Parents of first and second year members are encouraged to attend club meetings. A lot of information is shared at the meetings and can be overwhelming for the new 4-H member. We are encouraging this to keep everyone informed as they learn the 4-H system. Leaders and office staff want to make your start to 4-H a welcoming and comfortable one! If you have any questions about anything, please don t hesitate to contact the Extension Office, Follow the special new member blog at 4-H Project Materials First and second year 4-H members can expect to receive Project Hot Sheets in the mail for projects they signed up for in mid to late December. All other members can access the hot sheets at projects or come into the Extension Office. These hot sheets are an excellent tool for new ideas regardless of years in 4-H. If any 4-H member wants to purchase project manuals they can come into the Extension Office. Cost varies from $.50-$8. Page 6 4-H Family Focus Newsletter
7 Leadership Development Program 2013 Leadership Development invitations and information have been sent to all 9th-11th grade 4-H ers. Applications are due to the Extension Office by January 1. The Leadership Development group will meet at 6:00 p.m. before the scheduled county council or ELITE Project team meetings and will then participate in those meetings as well starting at 7:00 p.m. They will be done by 8:30 p.m. It is required to attend AT LEAST three of the four dates. Save these dates on your calendars: Feb 25, March 25, May 21, June 4. 4-H ELITE Project Team The following high school 4-Her s have been selected to serve on the ELITE Team. This groups is made of Enthusiastic Leaders Inspiring Teamwork & Experiences in our Washington County 4-H Program. 8 Market Beef Weigh-In Saturday, December 15, :30 a.m. noon Kalona Sale Barn Ten calves may be weighed in for the county fair and out-of-county events. Last year s bucketbottle calves must also be weighed to be shown in the market beef class for Returning bucket-bottle calves are included in the maximum of ten head that may be weighed in. Please Note: Any bucket-bottle calf project shown the previous year (2012) and weighed in for the current year (2013) is eligible to be entered in the Market Beef class or the Dairy Steer class for the 2013 County Fair. Breeding Heifers do not need to be weighed. Required information for purebred calves being nominated for Iowa State Fair and/or Ak-Sar- Ben: Breed Sire Name or Sire Registration # Tattoo Required information for purebred calves for county fair ONLY: Breed Required information based on breed requirements (see additional sheet with this information) Signed Affidavit from the producer, verifying this calf could be registered Tattoos will NOT be required for county fair shows in market animals (as of Winter 2011) Breed Steers Reminder- For County Fair ONLY exhibitors are not required to register the steer with the breed association to show in a purebred class. If not registered with the association, a copy of proper documentation based on the breed must be brought to weigh-in along with an affidavit signed by the producer verifying that this animal could be registered. Documentation requirements are included on the next sheet with the affidavit. Need one per animal. If the above information is not provided at December weigh-in, it will be assumed the calf is a crossbred. Costs: $1.50 per tag for all beef. AGAIN: Washington County will do retinal scanning for those nominating for the State Fair for $8/calf. Ak-Sar-Ben will require DNA samples for market beef for $5/per calf. Bring money to pay at weigh-in. Out of county calves will be charged an additional fee. Show up at your own convenience between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. If you must attend another weighin please contact the Extension Office immediately so proper arrangements can be made. 4-H LEADERS Please notify your NEW MEMBERS enrolled in beef project about beef weigh-in day!

11 REQUIREMENTS FOR MARKET BREED STEERS For Washington County Fair ONLY. State Fair and IJBBA shows will REQUIRE registration papers. Effective Winter 2011, tattoos are not required for county fair market animals, HOWEVER, ALL breed steers must have tattoos for State Fair. Necessary paper work must be turned in at December weigh-in. Angus: Need a copy of dam & sire s registration and meet requirements of American Angus Association Rules of eligibility. Belgian Blue: Need to be 50% & copy of sire and dam s registration to meet requirement. Brangus: Need registration of dam or sire to meet registration requirement. Charolais: Must be sired by purebred bull or out of a purebred dam and have copy of registration paper to meet requirement. Chianina: All percentage of Chi are eligible, have registration number and name of sire or dam to meet requirement. Gelbvieh: Must be 50% and have a copy of registration of sire or dam to meet requirement. Hereford (Polled or Horned): Must meet requirement of breed association and have registration paper of sire or dam to meet requirement. Limousin: Must be 50% or greater and have registration paper of sire or dam to meet requirement Maine Anjou: Must be sired by registered bull and have registration name or copy of registration paper to meet requirement Murry Grey: Must be 50% and have copy of registration of sire or dam to meet requirement. Red Angus: Must be 50% Red Angus or more, be from one registered parent, be predominately red in color and display sufficient breed characteristics and have copy of registration paper to meet requirement. Salers: Must be 50% or more with either dam or sire being registered and have copy of registration paper to meet requirement. Simmental: Must be ½ blood or higher and have a copy of registration paper to meet requirement. Shorthorn: Must be at least 15/16 and have copy of registration paper to meet requirement. Shorthorn Plus: Must be between 3/8 and 7/8 Shorthorn and have copy of registration paper clearly showing percentages to meet requirement. South Devon: Must be sired by ¾ bull or higher and have copy of registration paper to meet requirement. In all breeds if sire is an artificial insemination bull, a photocopy of his pedigree from semen dealers catalog would meet requirement. These rules are modeled after IJBBA and will be updated as IJBBA updates their rules, but IJBBA rules will not supersede these rules.
