However, with foreig multiatioals settig shops i Idia, the demad for private security witessed a substative expoetial growth. This demad was further itesified i the 21st cetury with the growig isecurities of urbaisatio, mushroomig of shoppig malls ad self-cotaied towships, ad frequet terror attacks. Aother importat factor cotributig to this demad is the poor police-populatio ratio i Idia. There are about 140 policeme to 100,000 people, while globally the ratio is a average of 1:270. The idustry has scaled its operatioal capabilities sigificatly to meet the growig demads of security. The icreased demad for armed security viz-á-viz o-provisio for arms liceses for commercial use have give rise to some grey areas i the sector. Luch Sessio II: Pael Discussio o Recogisig Private Security Guards as Skilled Workers Security guards employed with PSAs are required to udergo a miimum of 160 hrs of traiig. By virtue of the job they perform, like access cotrol, x-ray scaig, metal detectio, CCTV surveillace etc, security guards eed to be desigated as highly skilled workers. However, security guards are placed uder the uskilled/semi-skilled workers category i terms of wage structure. Such a categorisatio ot oly limits their prospects of growth, but also has a debilitatig effect o the quality of their performace. FICCI's Committee o the Private Security Idustry has proposed up-scalig of this categorisatio to skilled ad highly skilled workers category. The sessio will deliberate o the issue of categorizatio of uarmed private security guards as uskilled workers i the light of expected service delivery.
