1 Minimum curriculum time requirements for Queensland state schools 2012 and 2013 This pa outlines the minimum curriculum time requirements for the 2012 and 2013 implementation of the Australian Curriculum, Prep to Year 10, and the current Education Queensland () for the teaching of languages. It also indicates the time allocated to English, mathematics and science in the Curriculum into the classroom (C2C) materials. The pa has four sections: 1. Section 1: Background Australian Curriculum 2. Section 2: 2012 and 2013 minimum curriculum time requirements for the implementation of the Australian Curriculum: English, mathematics, science, and history, and the current d time for teaching languages in schools 3. Section 3: Curriculum into the classroom (C2C) 4. Section 4: Tables comparing time requirements Section 1: Background Australian Curriculum The Australian Curriculum describes a learning entitlement for each Australian student. It sets out what young people should be taught and an expectation of the quality of their learning. Ministers for Education have affirmed their commitment to an Australian Curriculum in all eight learning s outlined in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians to ensure every Australian school student is taught the same core curriculum and is judged against the same achievement standards. For Prep to Year 10, the Australian Curriculum (inclusive of all eight learning s) is written so that it should not take up more than 80 cent of the total teaching time available in schools. This proportion peaks in Years 7 and 8 as students are engaged in all eight learning s. It reduces significantly in Years 9 and 10 as expectations are reduced to five core learning s English, mathematics, science, history, and health and physical education. The relative emphasis given to each of the eight learning s varies across the stages of schooling. The learning s of English, mathematics, science, history, and health and physical education will be taught to students in each year from Prep to Year 10. In 2012 Queensland state schools will implement English, mathematics and science; history will be implemented in Health and physical education implementation is still to be determined. The Australian Curriculum for the Arts, geography, business and economics, civics and citizenship, design and technology, ICT, and languages will be developed for students across Prep to Year 10. Students in Years 9 and 10 will have the flexibility to continue or discontinue learning in these s depending on which electives a school decides to offer students and which electives students choose. The Queensland Studies Authority () has provided advice on time allocations and entitlement for schools ( includes advice on all learning s, which will be revised as more information becomes available from ACARA (see Table 1). 1
2 Section 2: 2012 and 2013 minimum curriculum time requirements for the implementation of English, mathematics, science, history and languages For 2012 and 2013, all Queensland state schools will adopt the minimum curriculum time requirements provided in Table 2. Table 3 provides an example of how the minimum curriculum requirements in Table 2 can be distributed over a school. As long as the minimum curriculum time requirements in Table 2 are adhered to, schools have flexibility to allocate more time to particular learning s. Field trips and excursions contribute to this time decision. For 2012 and 2013, Education Queensland will maintain its current Time Allocations for English and mathematics Years 1 to 7 published in the Roadmap for P 10 curriculum, teaching, assessment and reporting. For 2012 and 2013, the minimum curriculum time requirements for the implementation of the Australian Curriculum: science align with advice from the Queensland Studies Authority (). For 2012 and 2013, Education Queensland s existing mandatory time allocations for languages continue to apply. For 2013, the minimum curriculum time requirements for the implementation of the Australian Curriculum: history align with advice from the. The minimum curriculum time requirements represent 25 hours of curriculum time for 40 s in Prep to Year 9, and 38 s in Year 10. This policy will be revised to take account of further implementation of the Australian Curriculum and the Year 7 move to secondary school. Schools will be notified of changes to the minimum curriculum time requirements early in This policy will be reviewed for schools piloting Junior Secondary in Until the Australian Curriculum phases 2 and 3 are implemented, the Queensland curriculum must be taught for the arts, health and physical education, elements of studies of society and the environment, languages and technology. 6 Section 3: Curriculum into the classroom (C2C) The C2C project materials will provide comprehensive school and classroom plans and resources to support implementation of the Australian Curriculum from Exemplar curriculum plans, and unit and lesson plans in English, mathematics and science will be available from October 2011, one term in advance of when they are needed. For Prep to Year 7, the lesson plans for English, mathematics and science meet the minimum curriculum time requirements as detailed in Table 3. For Years 8, 9 and 10, the lesson plans for English and mathematics are organised into lessons of 70 minutes and meet the minimum curriculum time requirements as detailed in Table 3. In Years 8, 9 and 10 science, C2C materials take more time than Education Queensland s minimum curriculum time requirements. The amount of content to be covered may take more time than indicated in Table 3. Schools have the flexibility to adjust the lessons plans and build in appropriate revision and extension time to assist with the range of student needs.
