4 Centre for Local Economic Strategies Independent think and do tank realising progressive economics for people and place We aim to progress economic interventions and ideas which bring maximum benefit to people and places, within the limits of the environment. Based in Manchester, we influence policy and change behaviour in local government and other organisations across the UK and beyond. Back into work: helping the over 50s in Greater Manchester 4
5 Why fulfilling work in later life? Two focus areas: staying in work and getting back into work Huge benefits to the individual: Improved financial security, increased savings Avoid negative health impacts of worklessness Improved social connections But the quality of work is key. Huge benefits to society: Extending the average working life by just one year could increase GDP by 1%, or 20 billion by If the employment rate 50-64s matched those in their 30s and 40s, UK GDP could be up to 88.4bn higher Back into work: helping the over 50s in Greater Manchester 5

Commissioned CLES & Learning & Work Institute to conduct series of insight and co-design workshops across Greater Manchester Delivered a series of workshops across 5 localities Eccles, Salford Brinnington, Stockport Bickershaw, Wigan Werneth, Oldham Gorse Hill, Trafford Back into work: helping the over 50s in Greater Manchester 12
