2 About The Position Our cooks prepare meals with purpose. Not only do they perform all kitchen and food prep duties, but they also provide valuable life skills and job training to Marin County Jail inmates. Under general supervision, incumbents in this position will prepare, cook and serve food in the Marin County Jail; clean equipment and maintain health and safety regulations in the kitchen facilities; and direct kitchen inmate workers in food preparation service and cleanup activities. The current position requires work on assigned shifts which may involve working evenings, weekends and holidays. The Marin County Jail The jail is located on the Civic Center grounds in San Rafael. The jail provides housing and care for an average population of over 300 inmates, both men and women, who have been booked for a violation of law or sentenced to serve a jail term. In addition, individuals en route to another jail or prison may be temporarily held in the County Jail.

3 Our Highly Qualified Candidate The ideal candidate is experienced in preparing and serving a high volume of meals in an institutional setting and is trained in necessary safety and sanitation procedures related to the preparation and storage of food in a high volume setting. The candidate is a good communicator, able to provide and receive verbal instructions successfully in an active environment. In addition, the ideal candidate is experienced in following menus and recipes and coordinating food preparation to ensure that food is ready at established times. The ideal candidate must also have the ability to supervise and work with inmates in a secure environment. We recognize your time is valuable, so please do not apply if you do not have at least the following required Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the knowledge and skills listed on the class specification. Typically, equivalent to one year of food preparation, service and clean up in a large institutional or similar volume setting. Candidates must also successfully pass a sanitation and safety certification course after hire. Current possession of this certification is highly desirable.

4 Compensation and Benefits The County offers an attractive compensation and benefits program. The salary range for this position is $4,327 to $4,730 per month depending on qualifications. The competitive benefits program includes: Insurance: The County has a cafeteria-style benefits plan that allows employees to choose from a variety of health, dental, vision, life, and long-term disability insurance plans. Retirement: The County retirement system is authorized by the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937 and has a reciprocity relationship with CalPERS. County employees working 0.75 FTE or more are enrolled in a defined benefit retirement plan which provides vested members with a lifetime retirement benefit based on total years of retirement service credit, age at retirement and highest average compensation. For more information on this plan, please visit MCERA s website. The County does not participate in Social Security except for a mandatory Medicare contribution. Leave Allowances: The County offers generous vacation, personal, and sick leave benefits plus up to 11 paid holidays. Deferred Compensation: The County does offer a choice of tax deferred 457b plans to which employees may contribute in order to enhance their retirement. The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur in these assignments while the list remains active. Special Requirements The candidate selected for this position must successfully pass a detailed background investigation conducted by the Marin County Sheriff s Department, including a polygraph examination and/or a computerized voice stress analysis, and will be asked about illegal drug use.
