2 Equity Market HIGHLIGHTS Global equity markets exhibited volatility at the beginning of the month as concerns regarding impact of Britain's decision to leave the European Union (EU) resurfaced. However, expectations of fiscal stimulus from the developed economies and easy money policies from major global central banks kept most markets across the world in green for July. Indian equity markets started the month on cautious note led by global cues. However, steady progress of monsoons, expectations that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill will be passed in the current session of the Parliament coupled with FII inflows fueled the riskon sentiment. Subsequently, S&P BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 gained 3.9% and 4.2% respectively. Mid and small cap indices continue to outperform their large cap peers. Among the sectoral indices, barring technology, all the other sectors closed the month in green. Metals and Oil & Gas sectors were among the top performers. Long maturity government bond yields fell across the developed economies including Eurozone, UK and emerging economies. Domestic bonds reflected the global trend and rallied in July amid positive market sentiments backed by improving macroeconomic situation, rising systemic liquidity along with robust FPI flows into the Indian bond market during the month. The 7.59% year benchmark bond yield hit a 3 year low to 7.16% by end of July. The yield curve grew flatter in July as the medium to long duration yields eased more than the short end. RBI kept the policy rates unchanged as per market expectations. The focus of the central bank since the April policy has been on improving liquidity and ensuring transmission of previous rate cuts into bank lending rates. The stance of monetary policy remains accommodative while flagging off upside risks to the inflation target of 5% for March

The Indian rupee rose 0.8% in July to stand at 67.02/ USD. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) bought foreign currency worth $3.8 billion, on net basis, in AprilJune 2016 to shore up foreign exchange reserves.
