Thanks to investor appetite for equity funds, the AUM of equity funds rose 39% in FY If we include ELSS, balanced funds and ETFs that track indices, the overall growth in the equity category went up to 48% in FY i.e. to `9.95 lakh crore in FY from ` lakh crore in the preceding fiscal. However, the industry saw a decline in net inflows in equity funds compared to the preceding months. The total net inflows in equity category was `18,493 crore in March as against `22,240 crore in February and `20,821 crore in January. Vidya Bala, Head of Mutual Fund Research, Funds India attributes this to market correction and re-introduction of LTCG tax on equity funds. Last month, we have seen volatility in the markets. This resulted in large-scale redemption from the equity funds from both HNIs and retail investors. Moreover, some investors have redeemed their investments to avoid paying tax on their capital gains from equities, said Bala. MF industry adds 32 lakh new investors after Mutual Fund Sahi Hai campaign The mutual fund industry has added 32 lakh new investors after the launch of Mutual Fund Sahi Hai campaign one year ago. AMFI now aims to add 50 lakh new investors by the end of FY , said A. Balasubramanian, Chairman AMFI and CEO of Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund at the launch of the second phase of the campaign. Concerted efforts taken by the mutual fund industry through the Mutual Funds Sahi Hai campaign, under the guidance of SEBI, supported by favourable market conditions and support from the distribution community, led to overwhelming success in the inaugural year of the campaign. Given the rising household incomes and higher appetite towards financial savings coupled with long term India growth story, we are sure that mutual funds would become the investment option of choice of every household in the years to come, he added. He further said that AMFI aims to add 50 lakh new investors in the next one year, riding on the back of industry focus, guided by the collective wisdom of industry players, to reach out additionally to investors present beyond the top 30 cities. 1

According to assurance, tax and advisory firm Grant Thornton, March saw 31 M&A deals worth $1,499 million, down 92 per cent in value terms from the year-ago month when deals worth $23,822 million were announced by way of 28 such transactions. The January-March period saw 118 deals worth $18,529 million, while the same quarter last year witnessed 105 merger and acquisition (M&A) deals worth $27,477 million. Economy to double to $5 trn by 2025; no risk to inflation target India is on track to double the size of its economy to $5 trillion by 2025, the finance ministry said while asserting that the inflation target set by the Reserve Bank will not be breached. The country is well poised to click a growth rate of 7-8 per cent and with focus on start-ups, MSMEs and infrastructure investment it can step on to higher growth pedestal, Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg said. India's GDP in value terms currently stands at $2.5 trillion - making it the sixth largest economy in the world. With regard to inflation, Garg said its trajectory is well within the RBI's target of 4 per cent, plus/minus 2 per cent. Vegetable price decline gives RBI room to hold rates, say analysts A sudden slump in India's vegetable prices following a spike in farm production will keep the central bank from tightening policy until the end of the year, analysts say, with inflation now tipped to slow more than originally forecast. The timely fall in vegetable prices is likely to lead the Reserve Bank of India to temper the tone of its monetary policy statement, which is due on April 5 and also gives the central bank more room to hold off raising interest rates. The impact of the crash in prices of vegetables, including onions, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbages, is expected to last at least until June, which in turn will lead to inflation undershooting RBI's projection of percent for April-September. Small savings interest rates may not go up in Apr-June The finance ministry indicated that the interest rate on small savings schemes may not go up in the next quarter. Government fixes every quarter interest rates of small savings schemes like PPF, NSC, senior citizen savings scheme and Sukanya Samriddhi Scheme. When asked whether the rising bond yield could prompt the government to raise interest rates on small savings schemes from April 2

Since 2016, the government has linked the small savings deposit rate with the benchmark Government Securities (G-Sec) rate. For the January-March quarter, the government had reduced interest rates on such schemes by 0.2 percentage points. Fiscal deficit will be within 3.5% of GDP, says Economic Affairs Secretary With India's April-February fiscal deficit having already crossed 120 per cent of the full year's target, the government said it was confident of keeping the deficit within the targeted 3.5 per cent range. The data released by the Comptroller General of Accounts (CGA) showed that India's budgetary fiscal deficit for the 11 months ended in February stood at per cent, `7.15 trillion, of the full year's revised target of `5.94 trillion. Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg said the CGA data was only till February-end and that the latest numbers available till March 28 are very close to revised estimates. Govt hopes to create 10 mn jobs by bearing entire 12% of pension incentive The government hopes to create 1 crore new jobs by bearing the entire 12 per cent of the basic salary that employers are mandated to make towards pension for the first three years for new employees. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved payment for the entire 12 per cent contribution for first three years for new staff. Our government is committed to creating jobs. The scheme which was implemented in 2016 had a provision for the government to pay for 8.33 per cent of the pension contribution by employers. We have further expanded the scope of the scheme. It has been decided that for apparel, garment and textile segments, the full 12 per cent of the employers pension contribution will also be borne by government, Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar has said. Government allows export of 2 million tonne of sugar The government has allowed export of two million tonne of sugar until the end of marketing year, in order to clear surplus stocks and improve cash flow to millers for making payment to sugarcane farmers. It has also allowed export of white sugar till September 2018 under the Duty Free Import Authorisation (DFIA) scheme, under which exporters are allowed to import sugar at zero duty within two years. Sugar mills owe `13,899 crore to cane growers as on March 21 of the current marketing year (October-September), according to official data. 3
