2 Why are we here today? The Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report and Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for Cumberland County, Pennsylvania are in the process of being updated as part of the Lower Susquehanna Swatara HUC 8 Watershed study. The FRR meeting is an opportunity for FEMA, the community, and partners to examine the new study areas, discuss how the analysis and mapping have changed since previous FIRMs, and work collaboratively to ensure that the needs of the community and its partners are met. 1

8 Mitigation: What is it? To reduce or eliminate long-term risk to people and their property from hazards. Can occur before, during, and after a disaster. FEMA encourages local governments to develop Hazard Mitigation Plans: To increase public and political support and commitment for mitigation To be eligible for Hazard Mitigation Assistance grants Use new Risk MAP information to update your Hazard Mitigation Plan 7
9 Hazard Mitigation Builds Sustainable, Resilient Communities Sustainability meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Indicators of sustainability are social, economic, and environmental health. Sustainable communities minimize the exposure of people and property to risk by planning for and mitigating against natural disasters. Sustainable communities are disaster-resilient! 8
10 Risk MAP and Community Resilience Critical to implementing FEMA s mission: to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards. 9
11 Project Area Nearly all of Cumberland County is in the Lower Susquehanna Swatara Watershed. This watershed was updated as part of a larger study to unify Susquehanna River profiles from the Maryland State line to the Dauphin/Northumberland County line. 10
