3 Testimonies from former imap Management Associates "Fresh out of school, and trying to clinch a job in the financial industry, is an all too familiar experience. Through the imap, I was given the chance to not only learn actuarial skills, but also underwriting skills in my company. The rotation between different lines of businesses, was an experience that helped provide a different perspective in the insurance deals seen. Occasionally, we were given the chance to network with other professionals in the industry here in Singapore, as well as abroad. Though juggling two professional papers is tough, the support from SCI and the company tremendously helped in my current progress. Hence, as a whole, imap has indeed provided a stepping stone into my career progression." Velda Tan, Actuarial Insurance UK Limited, Singapore Branch (1st imap) I found the imap to be a very good transition from school to work as the combination of classroom lectures and on the job training enabled me to be adequately prepared for the professional exams and at the same time also gain work experience. The lectures made the learning curve in my day to day work more manageable as I was able to relate back to relevant examples. Jerome Ng, Assistant Broking Executive, Marsh (Singapore) Pte Ltd, (1st imap) imap is the perfect springboard to career development in the insurance industry. Its comprehensive curriculum and mentorship programme facilitates progressive learning while the job rotations offers countless opportunities for hands-on experiences and knowledge application. Tay Kwan Loong, Management Associate, Allied World Assurance Company, Ltd, (2nd imap) imap has provided me with a good foundation in insurance knowledge, helping me to have a solid head start in the general insurance industry. I believe that with my personal drive and determination, I can utilize my knowledge gained from imap to build a strong career for myself. Yeo Han Qi, AXA, GI 2nd Intake In an industry where experience counts for more than all the text can carry, this course has very effectively inducted my understanding of insurance and all its intricacies, inculcating in me the ability to better understand the jargons so much quicker and that much thorough for my career. It is also through this programme that I have had the opportunity to meet veterans and similar new bright-eyed entrants to this industry. A wonderful course to say the least. 7 02 02 Diversity of Careers

8 Diverse Career Journeys I started my journey in the insurance industry in 1977 and didn t know that it would last so long. My journey has been fantastic, 39 years of happiness and full of surprises that have been rich in human experience, cultural diversity, market knowledge, innovation, new technology, emerging risks, etc. For an industry which can look upfront very boring, our industry is full of exciting opportunities to develop your skill, to satisfy your curiosity and mobility. My role as CEO of PartnerRe Asia and Head of P&C Underwriting in APAC is to manage and lead our operations across Asia, to expand PartnerRe brand in Asia, to define and execute our strategic orientations, to ensure the quality of relationships with clients and brokers, and to be accountable for the underwriting results. Although insurers and reinsurers are both in the risk business, their business model and expertise are very different. In fact, they are complementary to each other with reinsurers taking away from insurers their risk volatility. What they have in common is that they are both selling a product without knowing its final manufacturing cost. This is one of the reasons for the cyclicality of our industry and its competitiveness, as each player may have its own way to manage the cycle. What should be important for our industry is a good understanding of the follow the fortune principle. This principle which is challenged in price-driven developing countries requires long-term partnership and trust between insurers and reinsurers. 03 Alain Flandrin Former CEO of a Reinsurance Company When I entered the insurance industry in London in the early 1980s, I was not sure what I wanted to do. However, upon my best friend s recommendation, I took on a job in the Marine Cargo Department of a large Broking Company. I very quickly learned that all types of cargo suffered from losses from time to time. I also learned that over several hundred years, Lloyd s of London had developed a network of agents around the globe, as well as the methods of insuring and dealing with just about any commodity that could be shipped or transported. That was certainly fascinating! As my skills developed, I started to specialise, first in bulk oil cargo, and later, a niche in livestock and bloodstock, being primarily exotic animals destined for the zoos. I came to love the oil sector and moved to work for a Specialist Oil and Gas Insurance Broker, where I learned about drilling, blowouts and control of well insurance, as well as offshore structures, refineries and petrochemical plants. The nature of this business is that the risks and the premiums are high, but the claims can be huge. They invariably involve a very large number of parties. The policyholder relies on his broker to help to navigate through the web of stakeholders, and bring all parties to a common agreement, in terms of the scope and extent of the coverage for his claim. The most satisfying moments in my career had arrived. That was when, after sometimes months of negotiations had elapsed, all obstacles had been overcome, and a settlement finally reached to the satisfaction of the client. Over the years, I was promoted and dealt with bigger and more complex losses. I would frequently travel out of London to other countries to support clients. In the course of my career to date, I have worked in over 60 counties. Insurance is truly a global business, with some very large multinational companies, where it can provide good opportunity to work throughout the world. A few years ago, I was fortunate to be invited to move to Singapore, to work as Head of Claims in Asia for my Company. This is a role that I love and which continues to take me to new places, and thus, to take on new challenges. Neil Thomas Regional Head of Claims Willis Towers Watson

9 Diverse Career Journeys I am responsible for the P&L of my department, which is like running my own company - very entrepreneurial. The responsibility and ownership in the role are often rewards in themselves. Sometimes I underwrite policies where the liability can be as high as US$300,000 per day of project delay. I have also travelled the world, often at very short notice - boarding that aircraft at Changi is just the beginning of what is usually set to be a unique experience. Every day I see different risks, different people. I am very much a people person and I have the opportunity to meet brokers and business people. I ve developed a good understanding of what is required in underwriting and am comfortable dealing with clients in any locality. I am a hungry deal-maker and this excites me. Said Khan Cargo Underwriter at a Lloyd s Syndicate 04 In the early part of my working life, I was looking for an industry that fitted my temperament and skill sets, as well as a place where I could build a career not just fleeting jobs. As a young professional, I hoped for a degree of controllability in my career; general insurance seemed like the place to find that. In investment banking at the time, there was no lack of qualified people all jostling in a very over-crowded opportunity space. General insurance was, and still is, under the radar and the opportunity to stand up and be counted is ever-present. When I started out in insurance, we ran on pure adrenalin. My organisation had just formalised a one-year tutorship, where I was fortunate enough to be mentored by the department manager. In my first year, I was sent on a short secondment to Hong Kong, attended seminars in KL and Singapore, all culminating in Specialty School in the US where we met with senior management and hires from other branches. I remember embarking on a self-drive trip over the weekend with a group of international hires from Connecticut to New York, where we painted the town red. These early positive experiences: the fast-paced nature of the work, the travel opportunities, and the trust and independence accorded to me, dispelled pre-conceived notions that I held regarding the insurance sector. Noel Tan Regional Financial Line Manager at a General Insurance Company Loss adjusting is a very exciting and interesting profession. It forms an important component of the insurance industry. The Loss Adjuster is an independent party appointed by insurance companies to deal with claims under the terms and conditions of the contract of insurance. He puts forth his recommendations after a thorough investigation of the incidents. He acts as a bridge between the insurance companies and the claimants or insureds. A Loss Adjuster has to deal with all types of situations such as fire, theft, collapse of structures, personal injuries, fraud, etc. One moment, he may be investigating a fire in a factory and the next conducting an enquiry on the death of a policyholder. As a Loss Adjuster has to deal with tragic and disastrous situations, he or she must be a good communicator and possess good interpersonal skills. Loss Adjusting offers great opportunities to travel and the chance to see things that many outside the profession do not have. I know of several adjusters making loss adjusting as a life-long career and many have done well in life. If there is insurance, there will be loss adjusting - it is here to stay. Chan Hwee Seng Chairman of a Loss Adjusting Firm
