3 1. INTRODUCTION THE III AND ITS MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS FROM A CLOSE PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CHARTERED INSURANCE INSTITUTE (CII). THIS RELATIONSHIP HAS FACILITATED INSURANCE PROFESSIONALS IN IRELAND AVAILING OF AND OBTAINING INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED ADVANCED INSURANCE QUALIFICATIONS THROUGH THE CII. 2. CII MEMBERSHIP AND PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS The CII is the leading professional body for the global financial services profession and aims to promote higher standards of integrity, technical competence and business capability. With over 110,000 members in more than 150 countries, the CII is the world s largest professional body dedicated to insurance and financial services. Success in CII qualifications is universally recognised as a global standard Membership of the CII signals a commitment to developing a broad professional capability and a willingness to adhere to the standards associated with professional status. Following are the highest membership levels available to qualified members of the CII: Associate (ACII) Fellow (FCII) Individuals in Ireland who wish to use either the ACII or FCII designations must hold membership of the CII. To avail of the III CPD provision and compliance recording services, these members can apply for dual membership of the CII and the III. CII members at ACII or FCII level can also apply to the CII for Chartered status. Three Chartered titles are available: Chartered Insurer Chartered Insurance Practitioner Chartered Insurance Broker Chartered Insurer, Chartered Insurance Practitioner, Chartered Insurance Broker, FCII and ACII are registered collective marks of the Chartered Insurance Institute, CII and the CII logo are registered trademarks of The Chartered Insurance Institute. 4 Introduction CII Membership and Professional Designations 5

4 3. RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 4. CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Holders of III qualifications may be eligible for CII recognition of prior learning. This means that passes in III exams can award credits that count towards CII qualifications, The CII recognition of prior learning scheme supports faster-track completion of CII professional qualifications and reduces both the time taken and duplication of study. Before submitting an application, members should consult the recognition of prior learning rules. Full details of scheme rules, application process and frequently asked questions are available at Members with queries regarding their application should contact the CII directly on Please note that III exam credits are not automatically added to CII records, therefore if members wish to register their III or academic examinations/qualifications with the CII they will need to apply to the CII directly. The CII recognition of prior learning scheme is independent of the III exemption scheme. Therefore, awards and credits may differ between organisations. Please also note that the CII charge a fee to claim recognition of prior learning credits. As MDI modules have been licensed by the III from the CII for localisation to the Irish market, a significant portion of the content mirrors the original CII units. Therefore, with effect from August 2013, the CII have agreed a reduced recognition of prior learning fee for III members of 1 per credit for MDI modules for CII and III members. Please note that the recognition of prior learning fee for non-mdi modules remains for 2014 at 3 per credit for CII members and 5 per credit for non-members. Full details are available at CII recognition of prior learning awards can change as the CII and III qualification frameworks evolve. We recommend that students apply for CII credits as soon as they successfully complete each eligible III examination or qualification. Once credits are paid for and confirmed by the CII, they will remain on the student s CII learning statement which can be requested from The CII announced a new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme on 2 July 2012 which applies to all CII qualified members, e.g. anyone holding the ACII or FCII designations. The CII have communicated details to their members advising them of what their new CPD requirements are. Full details are available at 6 Recognition of Prior Learning Continuing Professional Development 7
