1 King Charles I School Supporting successful futures Headteacher: Stephen Brownlow Dear Parents/Carers, Year 10 Trip to Berlin (Germany) in October 2018 November 2017 Following successful overseas trips to Belgium and Berlin in 2017, we are hoping to organise a five day trip to Berlin from Wednesday 17 th to Sunday 21 th October 2018 for our current Year 10 students who will then be in Year 11. This opportunity is available to all Year 10 students but, in the first instance, priority will be given to students who take GCSE history and any remaining places will then be allocated to other interested Year 10 students. One of the four sections of the GCSE history course that the students study is called Living under Nazi Rule and this trip is designed to enhance and improve their understanding of this topic. This engaging visit gives students the opportunity to visit some key sites from this period of history. We shall be using Rondo Travel Ltd, one of Britain s leading educational travel companies for years to make the necessary arrangements for us. The cost of the visit is 355 and includes travel by coach and Eurotunnel; full board accommodation for two nights at the Aletto Hotel Kudamm, Berlin, entrance fees to all sites and visit packs including: Berlin Underworld Tour; TV Tower and dinner atop one of the highest points in Europe; Sachsenhausen concentration camp; Reichstag & Dome; Topography of Terror; Berlin Zoo and a two hour guided city tour. Travel insurance is also provided by Rondo Travel Ltd and the school also has its own insurance policy for school visits. In order to cover the cost of the visit we are asking for a voluntary contribution to cover the full cost per student. Without this contribution from each participating student we will be unable to organise the trip as the school receives no funding for such activities. The cost of the voluntary contribution will be reviewed for the children who qualify for the pupil premium. The pupil premium is applied to children who: are registered and in receipt of free school meals currently or in the past 6 years; are looked after children; have been adopted from care under the Adoption and Children Act 2002; have left care under a Special Guardianship or Residence Order; or have parents/carers in the armed forces. Parents/carers can register their son(s)/daughter(s) for free school meals if they get any of these benefits: Universal Credit in prescribed circumstances Income Support Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance Income-related Employment and Support Allowance Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 Guarantee element of State Pension Credit Child Tax Credit, provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit** and have an annual income that does not exceed 16,190 **Note: From 1st May 2009, students are eligible for Free School Meals for a four week period immediately after the parent/carer becomes unemployed, or reduces their hours to less than 16 hours a week, but is still in receipt of Working Tax Credit. 2 If you would like your son/daughter to come on the Berlin visit in October 2018, please return the attached reply slip and consent form along with a deposit of 55* (cheque or ParentPay only) to the Finance Department by Friday 12 th January. If paying by cheque please place in an envelope labelled Berlin Visit October 2018 with your son/daughter s name, form class and amount enclosed. Cash cannot be accepted. The remaining 300 is payable in two further instalments of 150 on Thursday April 19 th 2018 and Thursday 12 th July 2018 respectively in the same way as the deposit. A visit briefing for students and parents/carers will be arranged nearer the date of the visit. Here you will all have a chance to learn all details of the visit including the learning objectives, travel, accommodation, what to bring and to meet the staff accompanying the party. A valid UK Passport and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is required and your son/daughter will need THEIR OWN CURRENT UK PASSPORT and EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD for the visit, so if you do not have these, it is best to organise these well in advance. The EHIC which provides access to hospitals in EU countries is available online.
