1 8 th May 2018 Dear Parent/Guardian, The History Department are pleased to announce that there will be a trip to the Battlefields of WW1 in Belgium on November 16 th This is an exciting opportunity for pupils of GCSE History as a significant portion of their course on Medicine through Time covers Western Front with its fighting conditions and the medical developments. This is an invaluable opportunity for pupils to see the Historic Environment they will be studying and will help them with their GCSE exams. In addition, the tour company have had their day trip itinerary approved and endorsed by Edexcel, the exam board, showing its value for students. This trip will take students to many key sites they will study such as: a trench system used in WW1, the Lijssenthoek Cemetery and Hill 60 where mines were used, as well as seeing weapons and memorabilia from the war at the Memorial Museum Passchendaele. Students also have the chance to see a dressing station and a casualty clearing station to learn about the medicine a procedures used in WW1. The trip costs 86 and will be running from 3am to 12am (midnight). Whilst this is a long day it helps keep the cost down. To secure your place, please bring the attached slip with a non-refundable deposit of 30 to Verity Brain by Friday 18 th May Payment can be made to Mrs Verity Brain directly by cash or cheque. There are only limited spaces and these will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis. Pupils must also have their own, valid, passport. Once your place has been secured you will receive a more detailed medical and consent slip and further payments can be made directly or via parentmail. This trip ties in with their course of study and is a great opportunity to bring history to life. The trip takes them to a trench used in WW1 and also explores the wounds and medicine used in WW1. This trip also ties in with the GCSE on offer at George Salter Academy. Pupils also get to go to the Lijssenthoek Cemetery to consider remembrance which is particularly poignant as November 2018 will mark 100 years since the end of WW1. The trip also includes a visit to Hill 60 where mines were used in WW1 and The trip costs 86 and will be running from 3am to 12am (midnight). Whilst this is a long day it helps keep the cost down. This play and novel are set in WW1 in the area we will be visiting. This is an invaluable chance for pupils to really grasp the context of these texts and bring them to life and consequently help them in their preparations for their exams. This information will be passed on to the company organising the tour so the Channel crossing can be booked.
