2 Description The system has started in Krakow since 1st July 2013 when the waste management system in the Municipality of Krakow changed according to the adopted law on the maintenance cleanliness and order in municipalities. By the power of a resolution of the City Council of Krakow on entrusting company with obligatory task of maintaining cleanliness and order in its own municipality. Beginning 1st July
3 In the Municipality of Krakow exist the maintenance cleanliness and order services such as: streets cleaning (sweeping and washing) sidewalks cleaning (sweeping and washing) maintaining the cleanliness of squares and green areas emptying street trash bins removing unauthorized landfill sites 24h work-shift mobile groups 3
4 Implemantation realises the handling ensures the maintenance cleanliness and order in the Heritage City Centre with 24 hours intervention work in a shift system controls a proper execution of the service bears the costs of the system 4
5 Technical aspects The service is provided by the Municipal Cleaning Company (about 300 employees). The specificity of the tasks and the increasing standards cause the need to upgrade the equipment base. The Company successively purchases specialized vehicles to clean streets and sidewalks which characterize in small-size and are perfect to use for the Heritage City Centre. The Company has 187 pieces of equipment in total to clean the city (without cars used to collect and transport waste). All sweepers work with a use of water and have a water recirculation system. All cars meet the EURO 6 emission standards and the sweepers are equipped with special PM10 certified filters which trap pollutants and do not allow their secondary emissions into the air. 5
6 Frequency of the cleaning streets The Municipal Cleaning Company realizes the services according to schedule. We can distinguish 8 kinds of frequency of cleaning streets. 7 24h work-shift mobile groups Inicident The Company has a control room which coordinates the maintenance cleanliness and order in the city and receives the intervention notifications about anomaly 24h/ day The mobile groups start the intervention immediately 7
8 The integration in system The Company carries out the tasks of limiting the secondary emission of harmful PM10. Interventions consist of increasing the frequency of clean-ups of streets, sidewalks, squares and introducing additional washing of streets and sidewalks. It limits the spread of dust from traffic. According to the procedure the Company has up to two hours from the receiving information on excess of PM10 to start sweeping and washing the marked streets and sidewalks. 17 Summary The maintenance cleanliness and order in the Municipality of Krakow is one of the most important aspects in the city. The services improve the operation of urban infrastructure (sidewalks, rain sewerage). The cooperation of inhabitants, representatives of the government, research units and cleaning company improve the quality of life and health of the population by the optimization and intensification of activities. It also contributes to an increase of attractiveness of the city and its tourist development. 17
