5 Prior to 15IS my only direct communication with ICCD was through Ralph Bilby At 15IS I met him and the rest of the Clubhouse fraternity for the first time My mission to check out whether the Clubhouse model was suitable for Gibraltar 5

6 Clubhouse Guarantee A right to a place to come A right to meaningful work A right to meaningful relationships A right to a place to return. My Impressions I was very impressed with the hospitality I received at 15IS and discovered the reality of the Clubhouse Guarantee in practice. Needless to say by the end of the Seminar I was convinced that the Clubhouse model works When I returned to Gibraltar I conveyed this to others and many are both impressed and excitedly looking forward to having a fully established Clubhouse in Gibraltar 6

7 Local Resources Gibraltar has an area of 3 square miles with a population of 30,000. Approximately 700 Persons are currently undergoing psychiatric treatment with a 45 bed Psychiatric Hospital which is filled to capacity and a Community Mental Health Team located in a separate location We also have a large General Hospital and a Primary Care Centre The Task Ahead There is no way that a Clubhouse could operate in Gibraltar without the consent of The Gibraltar Health Authority and the Health Care Professionals directly working with people undergoing mental health problems In June 2010 I faced my biggest challenge I gave a Clubhouse presentation to the majority of the Mental Health Care Professionals in Gibraltar including two Government ministers,clinical Psychiatrist, the Clinical Standards Compliance Director, The Occupational Therapists team, Social workers etc 7

8 The Response The presentation was blessed The timing spot on The attendance brilliant The questions asked demonstrated the immense interest There were genuine offers of support The Clubhouse model was welcomed with open arms and the Minister for Social Affairs urged me to keep the model even if I did not achieve the site I had requested The Presentation got a standing ovation initiated by the Minister for Social Affairs 8

9 The Site It is not easy to find a site in Gibraltar. Land is scarce and property is expensive Nevertheless a site was identified and requested following the timely bereavement of the licencee Although we had a good chance we were eventually told that our application had not been approved This was challenged directly with the Chief Minister and a special meeting was arranged in which this decision was overturned 9

10 Toc H site The site is in a very historical location with a lot of potential It is central but very private which is extremely useful in a small place like Gibraltar 10

11 Our Logo Our logo is made up of a combination of the ICCD logo and our Gibraltar Flag with its Coat of Arms The Castle and the key. 11

12 Ralph s Visit to Gibraltar In April 2011Ralph visited Gibraltar whilst on a personal holiday touring through Spain. Whilst in Gibraltar not only did he visit the sites but also gave a TV interview which came out on our local News programme and he also gave a presentation at one of Gibraltar s elite locations 12

14 Our Mental Health Campaigns Our Wear Yellow in Support of Mental Health Campaign is now being supported in others countries i.e Denver USA, Nairobi Kenya, Perth Australia, Birmingham and Manchester thanks to the support of Elemental Centre for Recovery & Thriving 14
