4 Raiffeisen in Austria: History and Principles Foundation The Raiffeisen organisation was founded by Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen ( ), one of the most important social reformers in the 19th century. Idea The original idea was to provide basic banking services to the rural population based on the cooperative principle. History Only ten years after the foundation of the first Raiffeisenkasse in Austria (1886), 600 banks were operating in the Raiffeisen system. Those local cooperatives formed Raiffeisen regional banks, such as Raiffeisenlandesbank Niederösterreich- Wien (1898). On a national level, Raiffeisen Zentralbank Österreich AG, was founded in 1927 as the central institution of the banking group. Principles Cooperation within the Raiffeisen Group has been based upon the principles of solidarity, subsidiarity and regionalism ever since. 4
5 Raiffeisen in Austria: Important group with valuable brand Important economic factor The Raiffeisen Group is Austria s largest private sector employer, with 1,600 independent cooperatives (Raiffeisen banks, warehouses, markets, food producing companies, other cooperatives) and approx. 58,500 employees. Valuable brand Raiffeisen is one of the most valuable brands in Austria with a brand value of about EUR 3 billion. At the same time, Raiffeisen is the number 1 brand among Austrian financial institutions.
