5 Raiffeisen in Austria: History and Principles Foundation The Raiffeisen organisation was founded by Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen ( ), one of the most important social reformers in the 19th century. Idea The original idea was to provide basic banking services to the rural population based on the cooperative principle. History Only ten years after the foundation of the first Raiffeisenkasse in Austria (1886), 600 banks were operating in the Raiffeisen system. Those local cooperatives formed Raiffeisen regional banks, such as Raiffeisenlandesbank Niederösterreich- Wien (1898). On a national level, Raiffeisen Zentralbank Österreich AG, was founded in 1927 as the central institution of the banking group. Principles Cooperation within the Raiffeisen Group has been based upon the principles of solidarity, subsidiarity and regionalism ever since. 5

8 RLB NÖ-Wien: a member of Raiffeisen Banking Group Austria RLB NÖ-Wien ist owned by 60 Raiffeisenbanks in Lower Austria directly (20.9%) and indirectly via Raiffeisen-Holding NÖ-Wien (79.1%). Following the merger of RBI and RZB the 8 Raiffeisenlandesbanken are now direct shareholders of the merged new RBI. Together, the Raiffeisenlandesbanken hold a 58.8 % majority of RBI.
