1 To Promote the Professionalism and the Growth of Our Members America s tax experts CSEA Inland Empire Chapter November 2016 ETHICS UPDATE AND REVIEW BY MARK SEID, EA, CPA, USTCP About the Speaker: After graduating from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Mark accepted employment with the Internal Revenue Service as a field agent in the San Jose District headquarters office. After a few years he moved to the San Luis Obispo post of duty where he completed the full training for general program Revenue Agents. He founded the firm in Paso Robles in 1996 dedicated to serving clients with the knowledge he had obtained spending nearly 10 years at the IRS. In 2000 he passed the examination for non-attorneys to practice before the U.S. Tax Court, a distinction earned by fewer than 300 individuals nationwide. He is uniquely qualified to represent our clients before the various taxing authorities due to his experience and knowledge. He is a member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents, California Society of Enrolled Agents and California Society of Certified Public Accountants. PRESIDENT S MESSAGE I hope you have all recovered from the extension deadline. Thank you to those who were able to attend the October meeting. Our Speaker Rodney Couts gave us a great presentation on the Affordable Care Act. I know he presented a lot of information in a short amount of time but I felt it was very informative and hope each of you did as well. This is a chance to get the Ethics CE you need this year for your EA Designation. Our speaker for the December 14th meeting is Doug Pickford EA. Doug is the current President of the California Society of Enrolled Agents, his presentation will be on Schedule C, a new perspective. For more information, call me at or gloriawilliams@gloriawilliamsea.com. Practice Management Tips If you don t already have one you are going to want to have worksheets for refundable credits. The form 8867 has been revised to include due diligence for the AOTC and CTC, in addition to the EITC. The preparer penalty for not exercising due diligence is $510 per credit, could total $1,530 per return. Remind clients that the refundable CTC or the EITC won t be issued any earlier than 2/15/2017. Another change for 2017 All 1099 s and W-2 s must be filed with the IRS by January 31st. This date is for both efiled forms and mailed in forms. Remind all clients that tax scams are out there and getting more sophisticated all the time. Now there are letters that mimic IRS letters, requesting a payment be sent to IRS at a Austin Texas PO Box. Scammers target older individuals, who may not use a professional. Remind clients to ward there older family members. Remember to renew your PTIN by December 31, If you are having trouble with the online renewal use for W-12. Paper renewal will take 4 6 weeks to process. Renewal fee is $ Order your paper copies of 1099-misc, 1096, W-2 and W-3 on line at IRS.gov. I like to keep a few paper copies on hand. Download Pub 17 to your desktop for easy reference. Currently 2015 is available. Pub 17 for 2016 should be available by 1st of January.
