4 KEYNOTE SPEAKER Robert MacRae, QC, was appointed Her Majesty s Attorney General for Jersey in May After spending the early part of his legal career as a Barrister in the UK, where he conducted trials over a wide practice area including contact, tort, employment, chancery, family and numerous jury trials, Robert returned to Jersey where he worked initially in Ogier s Litigation Department. Immediately prior to his appointment as Attorney General he was a Partner at Carey Olsen.
5 SPEAKERS Simon Aldous is a Director at Savills. Prior to joining Savills, Simon worked for Bidwells for 13 years, being a partner in from He qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in Simon undertakes professional work as a RICS Registered valuer of residential properties for banks, solicitors, accountants, trusts and private clients. Specific experience and expertise lies in valuing properties for tax evaluation purposes in particular held by companies (ATED) and non-domiciles in offshore trusts. He has for over 20 years specialised in valuations for capital gains tax and IHT purposes. Simon leads the Department s work on residential valuations for tax purposes. He is regularly asked to give talks to Trustees, Trust Companies and Legal Associations. Richard Bagnall-Smith is a Partner, Client Management and Sales at Cadell+Co. Before he founded Cadell+Co with Luke and Richard Camber, Richard was Global Chief Marketing Officer of Christie s. Richard is responsible for Cadell+Co s Client relationships and for negotiating art transactions. Before he founded Cadell+Co with Luke and Richard Camber, Richard was Global Chief Marketing Officer of Christie s, where he was responsible for the business development, marketing, digital, publishing and corporate communications departments. Richard was also a key member of the Executive Team at the Qatar Museum Authority. He worked with museum and function heads to develop a global reputation for what had been an internal Government department. He helped to inspire a more widespread cultural change as part of Qatar s 30-year vision. He has many years of experience in advertising, CRM and database marketing having been a Director at Publicis, Managing Director of Wunderman and Regional EVP at Grey Group. Richard is a member of the IOD and Fellow of the RSA. Euan Dangerfield is jointly responsible for managing Cazenove Capital s relationships with fiduciary firms across the Channel Islands. He joined Cazenove in 2011 from the investment consulting firm ARC, where he was managing director of the Jersey office. Since 1993, Euan has built up a broad experience serving the investment needs of individuals and trustees from both offshore and onshore jurisdictions. Before returning to Jersey in 2003 Euan headed the private client discretionary team at Royal Bank of Canada in London and has previously worked for HSBC and Hill Samuel. He is a Chartered Fellow of the CISI. Willem de Gier is a Partner: Technology, finance and legal infrastructure at Cadell+Co. He is responsible for Cadell+Co s operational, technology, finance and legal infrastructure. With a background in Corporate Strategy and Finance, Willem has recently been working closely with Private Equity and other investors active in the Art Sector on their business and operational infrastructure. A former Executive Management Board member at Christie s, Willem was responsible for Global Group Operations. This encompassed; Information Technology, ecommerce, Change Management, Procurement and Outsourcing, Global Logistics shipping and storage, Photography, Catalogue Print and Distribution, Web Publishing, Client Service Functions, Security and Real Estate Management. With a background in Corporate Strategy and Finance, Willem has recently been working closely with Private Equity and other investors active in the Art Sector on their business and operational infrastructure. Willem was educated at Bristol University (BSc.), Warwick Business School (MBA) and INSEAD (Executive Leadership).
6 SPEAKERS John Harris was appointed the Director General of the Jersey Financial Services Commission in November 2006 and subsequently joined the Board of Commissioners in March From 2002 to 2006, he held the position of Director - International Finance in the States of Jersey Chief Minister's Department where he had responsibility for all aspects of the government's policy on the maintenance and enhancement of Jersey's position as an international finance centre. From 1998 to 2002 he was Chief Executive Officer for NatWest Offshore with responsibility for offices in Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Gibraltar, Cayman, Bermuda and the Bahamas. He spent 22 years working for NatWest Bank during which time he held management positions in France, Switzerland and Singapore amongst others. John Harris obtained a BA (Hons) at Exeter University and is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers. Andreas Kistler is a Partner at Carey Olsen. He practises all aspects of Jersey commercial litigation, including contentious trust, professional negligence, disputes concerning investment funds and Jersey companies, contractual disputes and Jersey intellectual property rights (in particular trademarks, domain names and copyright). In addition, Andreas has significant experience of non-contentious Court proceedings including applications by trustees for directions, implementation of several of the most significant corporate takeovers by way of schemes of arrangement to occur in Jersey and post-listing reductions of share capital. Andreas has acted in numerous cases involving allegations of breach of trust, fraud and professional negligence, both for plaintiffs and defendants. He also has experience of mediation of such disputes. As a member of Carey Olsen's Litigation and Fiduciary Groups, he is regularly involved in applications by trustees for administrative directions (both contentious and non-contentious), applications by trustees and beneficiaries for relief on grounds of mistake and under the rule in Hastings-Bass, applications for orders approving compromises of disputes on behalf of minor, unborn and unascertained beneficiaries and applications for rectification of trust instruments. Salpy Kouyoumjian is a Partner at Boodle Hatfield. She has a strong international client base and specialises in providing international tax and structuring advice to ultra high net worth entrepreneurs (and the trustees and financial institutions who service them) in relation to their multi-jurisdictional private and business assets. She has extensive expertise in advising clients from Russia, the CIS and the Middle East on international and cross border taxation, long-term asset protection/risk management and family/business governance. Salpy brings to Boodle Hatfield considerable experience in designing and establishing bespoke international asset-holding and wealth management structures including private trust companies, limited partnerships, family offices, pooled investment vehicles and investment management/advisory structures. Salpy also has extensive expertise in Sharia compliant wealth structuring. Prior to joining Boodle Hatfield, Salpy spent five years at Clifford Chance and then ten years at Baker & McKenzie where she was a partner in the Wealth Management team. Salpy is fluent in Arabic, French and Armenian. Mark Lewis is a Partner in the Family Office Division of Stonehage Fleming. He joined the Group in 2014 after nearly 25 years as a lawyer in private practice specialising in international corporate and commercial work. Prior to joining the Group, Mark was a Partner of the international law firm Appleby, and was Head of the Corporate and Commercial Department of the Jersey office. Mark graduated from Magdalene College, Cambridge University, he qualified as an English solicitor and as a Jersey advocate. He also obtained a diploma in French Law (Certificate D Études des Lois Normand et Francaises). Mark has been recommended by Chambers Global and other legal directories as a leading Individual lawyer and is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences, particularly in relation to financial services regulation.
7 SPEAKERS George Pearmain has worked for the States of Jersey since 2012 advising initially the Minister for Economic Development, and more recently the Chief Minister on policy and legislative development in relation to the financial services industry. George currently takes lead responsibility for Government engagement in both the private wealth management sector and financial crime policy along with a variety of other day-to-day work across the financial services industry. George has a background in commercial litigation with a particular focus on fraud, regulatory and trust disputes. Tony Pitcher qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse following graduation from the Warwick Business School with a degree in Accounting and Financial Analysis. Soon after qualifying Tony joined the tax division of EY where he became a partner advising mainly on UK taxation of non UK trusts and companies. At EY Tony moved into the trust division where he managed trusts and companies for families with connections to the UK, USA and continental Europe. Following the acquisition of EY s trust business by a Canadian bank that has Jersey s largest Trust business, Tony first led a trust team of 40 people before he became the Managing Director with oversight of the whole business. Tony led the business for more than three years before deciding that working with clients and their advisers was his passion. He left the bank to work with clients and their advisers directly, most latterly with a UK bank, where he has been for over three years. Tony is a member of the STEP Jersey Branch Committee and is a past Chair. He is also a past Chair of the Jersey Taxation Society and has worked on a number of consultative bodies relating to Jersey s finance industry. Tony joined LGL Trustees in June 2014 to continue his work with ultra high net worth families in an owner-managed trust business where the needs of its clients are paramount. James Quarmby is a Partner at Stephenson Harwood. He is a specialist in tax planning, wealth structuring and asset protection for international private clients. He leads our award-winning private wealth team. James has a wide-ranging practice dealing with all aspects of private international wealth and he is highly respected for his practical and rigorous approach. The Legal 500 describes him as a very experienced tax lawyer with commendable professionalism and responsiveness who specialises in innovative tax planning work. He is also recognised by Chambers UK as a leader in the field. James also has a well-respected practice dealing with international pensions and remuneration trusts and regularly represents clients who are in dispute with, or under investigation by the HMRC. He lectures widely and is frequently published on the subject of tax planning and policy. As well as being a solicitor, James is a Registered Tax Technician and is regulated by the Association of Tax Technicians (ATT). He is an active member of STEP and the International Tax Planning Association (ITPA). Nick Ward has over 15 years legal experience in Jersey and was formerly a partner of one of the largest International law firms based in Jersey. In 2015 Legal 500 described Nick as first rate and with excellent technical skills and recommended him in the areas of banking and finance, corporate and commercial, and private client, trusts and tax. He has also been named as a key practitioner for structured finance and securitisation work and recognised by Legal 500 for his ability to cut through the issues and for being proactive and to the point. Nick graduated from Durham University in 1991 with a first class degree in Russian, Italian and Philosophy. He qualified as an English solicitor in He was sworn in as an advocate of the Royal Court of Jersey in 2006 and became a solicitor of the Eastern Caribbean Court (British Virgin Islands) in He currently advises on both Jersey and BVI law.
8 SPEAKERS Spencer Wells is Head of Channel Islands and Country Executive at Alter Domus, Jersey. Prior to joining Alter Domus in January 2012, Spencer worked for Ogier Fiduciary Services where he had responsibility for both Real Estate and Private Equity Funds. In this role Spencer was involved in all aspects of fund administration throughout the lifestyle of a variety of funds and was a director of a number of regulated fund entities. Spencer is approved to act as Director in Jersey by the Jersey Financial Services Commission. Spencer is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants with over 20 years experience in financial services. After qualifying in 2002, Spencer spent two years heading up the corporate administration team at SG Hambros in Jersey. Between 2002 and 2005 Spencer was a Director of Close Trust Company with responsibility for corporate and fund administration businesses in both Jersey and Guernsey. Lorraine Wheeler is Client Services Director at First Names Group. Previously Lorraine worked as a Director in the Private Client group of Capita. Coming from the UK, following secondments in Bermuda and Switzerland, Lorraine settled with her family in Jersey and has extensive experience in the trust industry, dealing with a range of traditional and complex structures including trusts, companies, limited partnerships and foundations. Lorraine qualified under the Chartered Institute of Bankers Trustee Diploma and also has a BSC (Hons) in Financial Services and a STEP certificate in International Taxation. She has acted as secretary of STEP in Jersey since 2005 and is now Chair of the branch, building upon her previous involvement with the Bermuda and Switzerland branches. She is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and previously served as Chair of the Bermuda branch.
9 CHAIR (MORNING) In April 2014 Naomi Rive joined Coutts & Co Trustees (Jersey) Limited as its Chief Trust Officer. A lawyer by training, Naomi was called to the English Bar in 1999 and qualified as a Jersey Advocate in Before joining Coutts, Naomi was a Partner and Head of the Jersey Private Client & Trusts team at international offshore law firm, Appleby. At Coutts, Naomi has oversight of fiduciary policy and works closely with clients and their independent legal, tax and investment advisers to ensure the establishment and implementation of robust and sustainable wealth planning structures. Naomi is Deputy Chair of the Jersey branch of STEP and sits on the Jersey Finance Trusts Law Working Party. CHAIR (AFTERNOON) Henry Wickham is a Senior Associate with Bedell Cristin. He joined the firm from Lawrence Graham LLP in London. Henry advises professional trustees and intermediaries in the Channel Islands and internationally on all aspects of Jersey trust law to include the establishment, ongoing operation and the restructuring of trusts and the establishment of private trust companies. He has significant experience advising upon the impact of international sanctions upon trust structures. Henry also advises on all related company and commercial law issues and the establishment and use of foundations. Henry has been recognised as one of the "Top 35 Under 35" by Private Client Practitioner 2015 and He has been cited as having a "can-do attitude and good technical knowledge" by Chambers Research He has spoken at seminars in Jersey and Geneva on family governance and new structures. Henry spoke on "STEP and the future of trusts" at the sixth CPD Plus seminar organised by the Jersey International Business School on 3 November Henry has also provided a seminar to local based trust companies on "Trustee investment duties: limiting liability and managing risks".
