2 INTRODUCTION The Middle East is witnessing a legacy planning revolution. Family businesses are the cornerstone of most GCC economies. With substantial wealth being in the process of passing to a new generation, legacy planning and good governance have never been more relevant topics. But with which tools? Western developed solutions have often limited appeal to GCC families for key assets such as regional operating businesses and real estate. Whereas different parts of the world have developed their own solutions or adapted foreign ones to their specific needs, Islamic law has not yet fully developed its own equivalents. Until now. Increasingly more flexible and sophisticated types of corporate and legacy planning tools are introduced by the various regional financial centers. And more is to come particularly at the UAE domestic level. The objective of this conference is to provide delegates, whether STEP members or not, with the latest regional legacy planning regulatory updates, practical examples from leading industry experts on best practice, as well as a taste of the exciting initiatives yet to come. The conference will also include practitioner updates on other regional developments, notably taxation/ CRS. We look forward to welcoming you to the region s premier wealth planning and networking event. KEYNOTE SPEAKER Sheikh Hussein A. Al-Banawi Sheikh Hussein A. Al-Banawi is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Industrial Group. He is an inspirational leader dedicated to helping the next generation of enterprise leaders in the Arab World. He is Founder of the Chair in Islamic Economics, Finance and Management at Rice University in Houston, Texas and also serves on the board of various civic organizations. He is also a founding member of The John D. Gerhart Center for Philanthropy and Civic Engagement at the American University of Cairo. Sheikh Hussein is a member of the Board of Trustees, Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee, and Chairman of the Investment Committee of the World Waqf Foundation of the Islamic Development Bank. An advocate and proponent of good corporate governance in both private and public institutions, Sheikh Hussein Al-Banawi is a member of the Board of Directors of Hawkamah, The Institute for Corporate Governance of the Dubai International Financial Centre. Sheikh Al-Banawi is also the Chairman of the Advisory Committee of The Effat Ambassadors Program, a program established at Effat University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to empower aspiring women leaders. Sheikh Hussein is the author of the recently published book, The Unknown Leader, one of the foremost publications on leadership which has emerged from our region.
