1 Earnings Release with History - Version 21.0 Description: The Earnings Release with History set of indicators for Chart Analysis, RadarScreen, and the Scanner indicates when the next scheduled earnings release will be for a selected stock. The RadarScreen indicator will show the next scheduled earnings release date, the time of day when the release is scheduled to occur, the EPS estimate, the number of calendar days from the current date until the next scheduled earnings release, and the earnings beat or miss history for up to 12 prior earnings announcements. The Chart Analysis ShowMe will show the number of calendar days until the next scheduled earnings release as well as configurable historical data and the Commentary window shows additional historical information as well as providing a link to the Zacks webpage for the selected stock. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOLLOW THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IN ORDER TO GET THE INDICATOR TO WORK PROPERLY: Installation Instructions: In order to get the indicator to work properly please do the following steps: 1. Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package for Visual Studio The following link should take you to the download page: Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio Download and run the vcredist_x86.exe file and download and run the vcredist_x64.exe file. 2. The files EarningsDate.dll and the cpprest120_2_2.dll files should be downloaded automatically by TradeStation when you install the indicator. They should be located in a directory under the "C:\Program Files(x86)\TradeStation 9.x\TSSN\Session\<unique ID#>\Earnings Release with History\.." path. If they are not there please contact TradeStation support. NOTE: In the normal case there is nothing for you to do in this step. This is just information for you to consider if there is a problem with getting the indicator to work properly. 3. Create the directory that will be used for backing up the earnings release data. The Earnings Release with History RS indicator's directory needs to be the same as the value of its dirpath. The default is C:\TS_ERH_RS. You will have to manually create this directory on your computer s C drive. 1

2 4. You might need to make sure that your antivirus software will allow the dll to make an HTTPS call via the Visual Studio 2013 software that was installed in step 1. In order to do this, you will need to allow the *.dll files that are discussed in step 2 above to have access to the Internet. NOTE: very few people have had to adjust their antivirus/firewall settings so it is very likely there will be nothing for you to do in this step. This is just included to be complete for debugging purposes if the indicator is not working properly. Possible problems/resolution: 1. Red "E" in RadarScreen display - Either the *.dll files in Installation step 2 are not installed or the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package for Visual Studio 2013 has not been installed. The solution is to close the workspace, fix the problem, and then reopen the workspace. 2. Red message "dirpath error; see support document" in RadarScreen - the directory path in the input value "dirpath" has either not been created or there is a mismatch in the path name versus the actual name of the created directory. The solution is to close the workspace, fix the problem, and then reopen the workspace. Inputs Earnings Release with History RS (RadarScreen ): ShowConfirmationDates = Determines if the Confirmation status of the earnings release date will be shown or not. If set to true, then the confirmation status will be shown. If set to false, then the confirmation status will not be shown. The possible confirmation statuses are: CC=company confirmed, AL=algorithm determined, or??=not confirmed. The default is true. DateAsText = Determines how the next scheduled earnings report date will be displayed. If set to true, then the date is displayed in a text format with the month shown in text. If set to false, then the date is displayed in a text format with the month shown as a number. Default is true. cautionwarning = Sets the number of days for the warning period. The default is 20. cautioncolor = This is the display color that will be used to show the number of calendar days remaining until the next earnings release. The default is yellow. imminentwarning = Sets the number of days for the imminent warning period. The default is 10. imminentcolor = This is the display color that will be used to show the number of calendar days remaining until the next earnings release. The default is red. dirpath = This is the path where a backup copy of the data for each stock will be saved. This data is used if the indicator is unable to reach the website until communications is reestablished with the website. The default is C:\TS_ERH_RS. You can use whatever directory you wish and must update this input if you choose something other than the default. You must create this directory manually in order for the backup data to be saved correctly. showweekday = This input controls the display of the 'Mon', 'Tue', Wed, 'Thu' and 'Fri' in the 'Nxt Earn Rel' column. A setting of 'true' will allow display 'false' will remove the days from being displayed. The default is' true'. 2

3 bmhistlength = number of prior earnings beat or miss results to display in the 'B/M(MR->LR)' column. The default is 5. The max number to display will be 12. datedisplayformat = determines how all dates are displayed by the indicator. A setting of '1' sets the display to 'MM/DD/YYYY/ format. A setting of '2' sets the display to 'DD/MM/YYYY' format. The default is '1'. useabbrreltime= determines the display format of the Release Time column. If set to 'false' then the full text string is shown. If set to 'true' then abbreviations are shown to save screen space. Default is 'false'. Inputs Earnings Release with History CH (Chart Analysis): cautionwarning = Sets the number of days for the warning period. The default is 20. cautioncolor = This is the display color that will be used to show the number of calendar days remaining until the next earnings release. The default is yellow. imminentwarning = Sets the number of days for the imminent warning period. The default is 10. imminentcolor = This is the display color that will be used to show the number of calendar days remaining until the next earnings release. The default is red. commentaryon= This input determines if the commentary text will be displayed in the commentary window. If set to true, then the commentary text will be shown. If set to false, then the commentary text will not be shown. Default is true. printepshist= This input determines if the EPS History will or will not be displayed on the chart. The default is 'true'. When set to 'true' the EPS History is displayed and when set to 'false' it is not displayed. beatcolor= This is the color that will be used to display the EPS history when the earnings report beat the estimates. The default color is green. misscolor= This is the color that will be used to display the EPS history when the earnings report missed the estimates. The default color is red. postperiod1= This input is used to see the stock's performance for the input number of days after the earnings report was released. The percentage change will be shown for the period between the opening price on the day after earnings was released until the closing price on postperiod1 days after the earnings report was released. If this value is set to '0' nothing will be displayed. The default is 10. This is only applicable for daily charts and will be displayed in the commentary window. postperiod2= This input is used to see the stock's performance for the input number of days after the earnings report was released. The percentage change will be shown for the period between the opening price on the day after earnings was released until the closing price on postperiod2 days after the earnings report was released. If this value is set to '0' nothing will be displayed. The default is 20. This is only applicable for daily charts and will be displayed in the commentary window. 3

4 postperiod3= This input is used to see the stock's performance for the input number of days after the earnings report was released. The percentage change will be shown for the period between the opening price on the day after earnings was released until the closing price on postperiod3 days after the earnings report was released. If this value is set to '0' nothing will be displayed. The default is 30. This is only applicable for daily charts and will be displayed in the commentary window. preperiod1= This input is used to see the stock's performance for the input number of days before the earnings report was released. The percentage change will be shown for the period between the opening price on preperiod1 days before earnings was released until the closing price one days before the earnings report was released. If this value is set to '0' nothing will be displayed. The default is 10. This is only applicable for daily charts and will be displayed in the commentary window. preperiod2= This input is used to see the stock's performance for the input number of days before the earnings report was released. The percentage change will be shown for the period between the opening price on preperiod2 days before earnings was released until the closing price one days before the earnings report was released. If this value is set to '0' nothing will be displayed. The default is 20. This is only applicable for daily charts and will be displayed in the commentary window. preperiod3= This input is used to see the stock's performance for the input number of days before the earnings report was released. The percentage change will be shown for the period between the opening price on preperiod3 days before earnings was released until the closing price one days before the earnings report was released. If this value is set to '0' nothing will be displayed. The default is 30. This is only applicable for daily charts and will be displayed in the commentary window. TextStringFontSize=This is the font size of the Next Earnings Release (NER) text that will be displayed in the Chart Analysis window and the default is 10. printepshistformat=this input allows you to control how the Prior Earnings Releases are displayed on the Chart Analysis Window. The default of 1 places a summary of the Earnings Release centered above the release day. If the input is set to a value other than 1 (I use 0) a vertical line is drawn on the Earnings Release date and the text is placed high enough above the Earnings Release date so that it does not interfere with the nearby candlesticks. earningsmarkercolor=this is the color of the lines that are used to show when a past earnings release occurred when the input printepshistformat is set something other than 1. earningsmarkersolid=this input controls the style of the line used to indicate when a past earnings announcement was released. If the input is true a solid line will be drawn and if the input is false a dotted line will be drawn. The default is false for a dotted line. earningsmarkertext=this input controls the text displayed for past earnings releases. The value of 1 creates a text display that shows the date, the earnings estimate, the actual earnings, and the summary of beat or miss. The value of 2 creates a text display that shows just the date colored green for a beat and red for a miss. The value of 3 creates a text display that shows the date and a beat or miss colored appropriately. The value of 4 creates a text display that shows earnings estimate and actual earnings colored appropriately. All other values are the same as the value of 1. The default is 1. 4

5 earningspremarkercolor=this input controls the color of the vertical line marker that shows the number of days before the upcoming earnings release. The default color is blue. earningspremarkersolid=this input controls the style of the line used to indicate the number of days before the upcoming earnings announcement. If the input is true a solid line will be drawn and if the input is false a dotted line will be drawn. The default is true for a solid line. earningspremarkerdays=this input controls how many days prior to the earnings release where a vertical line will be drawn. The input can be any value between 0 and 90. If the value is set to 0 no line will be created. If the value is set to a value greater than 0 then a vertical line will be drawn on that day to indicate a set number of days before the upcoming earnings release. The default is 0 so that no line will be drawn. earningspostmarkercolor=this input controls the color of the vertical line marker that shows the number of days after the most recent earnings release. The default color is magenta. earningspostmarkersolid=this input controls the style of the line used to indicate the number of days after the most recent earnings announcement. If the input is true a solid line will be drawn and if the input is false a dotted line will be drawn. The default is true for a solid line. earningspostmarkerdays=this input controls how many days after the earnings release where a vertical line will be drawn. The input can be any value between 0 and 90. If the value is set to 0 no line will be created. If the value is set to a value greater than 0 then a vertical line will be drawn on that day to indicate a set number of days after the most recent earnings release. The default is 0 so that no line will be drawn. datedisplayformat = determines how all dates are displayed by the indicator. A setting of '1' sets the display to 'MM/DD/YYYY/ format. A setting of '2' sets the display to 'DD/MM/YYYY' format. The default is '1'. datedisplaylocation = determines where the Next Earnings Release (NER) data will be displayed on the chart. If set to '1' the NER data will be displayed above the current bar. If set to '2' the NER data will be displayed in the upper left hand portion of the chart. If set to 3 the NER data will be displayed in the lower right hand portion of the chart. If set to 4 the NER data will be displayed in the lower left hand portion of the chart. If set to 5 the NER data will be displayed in the upper right hand portion of the chart. The default is '1'. mostrecentperiods = determines the number of previous periods that will be used to calculate an average up or down move for preperiod1, explosion data, and postperiod1 data in the commentary window. The default is 4 so that the 4 most recent periods will be used. showdatawindow = determines if a data window will be displayed in the Chart Analysis window. The default is 'false'. If set to 'true', a window will be displayed that shows a table of earnings release dates and how the stock has performed for the preperiod1, Explosion, and postperiod1 periods. Some statics will also be show for these values in 3 tables below the main table. This data is helpful in finding stocks that have a historical move going into or out of earnings and it also is helpful to see if a stock normally has a big reaction or not to an earnings announcement. 5

6 showepsest= This input determines if the EPS estimate will be shown on the chart or not. The default is 'true' so that EPS estimate will be shown. showreltime= This input determines if the release time will be shown. The default is set to 'true' so that the release time will be shown. The values are "AMC" for After Market Closes, "BMO" for Before Market Opens, "DMH" for During Market Hours, and "???" if the release time is unknown. showreldate= This input determines if the release date will be shown. The default is set to 'true' so that the release date will be shown. The date will either be shown in a string format or a numerical format based on the input DateAsText. alertdaythresh = used to generate an alert, if alerts are enabled, when the Next Earnings Release date is within the threshold defined by alertdaythresh. The default is '20' to be alerted when NER is within 20 days. Important Notes: All dates are in a MM/DD/YYYY or DD/MM/YYYY format determined by input datedisplayformat. In order for the data to be shown in the Chart Analysis window the stock must be in a RadarScreen window. The RadarScreen indicator is named Earnings Release with History RS and the Chart Analysis ShowMe is named Earnings Release with History CH. In summary, Earnings Release with History RS can be used without Earnings Release with History CH, but you must use Earnings Release with History RS so that you can use Earnings Release with History CH. In order to 'Earnings Release with History RS' in the scanner it must be in use in a RadarScreen window. 'Earnings Release with History RS' will work on the daily and minute time frames. 'Earnings Release with History CH' will work on minute, daily, weekly, and monthly time frames. The days until the next earnings release are always shown in calendar days. So you need to take this into account because in some situations this may make a difference. For example, assume you are using a daily chart and if the earnings release is to be on a Monday then the bar before the earnings release (Friday) will show 3 days to go. The next bar will be Monday (earnings release day) and will show an E for earnings release day. There will not be a count down from 3 to 2 to 1 because TradeStation only shows trading days and intervening Saturday and Sunday will not be shown. You need to pay attention to the Release Time column in the RadarScreen display. The release time may affect when you want to enact certain strategies. For example, if the Release Time is before the market opens then you may need to enact your strategy on the prior day since you may not be able to do any trading on the actual day the earnings announcement is made since the market may not be open for trading your particular instrument before the earnings announcement is released. The number of stock symbols that can be accessed each day has been limited to 500. If this limit poses a problem please contact us and we will see what alternate arrangements can be made. The "postperiods" will only be shown in the Commentary window for a Chart Analysis window that is set for daily data. 6

7 The "explosion" data will only be shown in the Commentary window for a Chart Analysis window that is set for daily data. The "explosion % move" is the change in the stock's price from the close of the day before the earnings release until the opening price on the day after earnings are announced. This value is designed to give you some sense of how much a stock moves in response to an earnings announcement. Uses: The primary use is to be able to know when next scheduled earnings report will come out. The commentary window that can be accessed in the Chart Analysis window will provide a link to the Zacks website for the current stock so you can get additional information, if needed. The commentary window also shows how a stock has performed for 3 different time periods after earnings are announced and this can be used to see if a stock has a particular pattern after an earnings announcement. The commentary window also shows how a stock has performed immediately after earnings are announced. The "explosion % move" can be examined to see how sensitive a stock is to an earnings announcement. The scanner can be used to find stocks that have an upcoming earnings release. The data shown when the input showdatawindow='true' can be used to see if a stock has a history of moving in a certain direction both prior to and after an earnings report is released. 7

8 Display: In RadarScreen the display is as follows: Nxt Earn Rel = date of the next earnings release. The format is: day of the week, date, (type of confirmation). The day of the week can be: Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri. The date can be either displayed in a number or text format depending on the setting of the input DateAsText. The type of confirmation can be: CC=company confirmed, AL=algorithm determined,??=unknown. The confirmation type be displayed or not based on the input ShowConfirmationDates. If the date is company confirmed the text will be in green, otherwise, it will be yellow. Release Time = time of day earnings release to be announced. It can be one of the following: After Mkt Close, Before Mkt Open, During Mkt Hours, or Not Known. It will be displayed in the same color as the Nxt Earn Rel column. EPS Est = Earnings estimate for upcoming quarterly release. If the earnings estimate is >= $0.0 then it will be shown in green, else it will be shown red. Cal Days = calendar days until the next earnings release. If the number of days remaining is greater than input cautionwarning it will displayed in green. If it is less than input cautionwarning it will be shown in the color of input cautioncolor. If it is less than input imminentwarning it will be shown in the color of input imminentcolor. If the Release Time is not After Mkt Hours a * will be shown to indicate that there is something to consider about the actual time of the earnings release. B/M(MR->LR)= Beat/Miss History for the past quarterly earnings reports. If an earnings release exceeded expectations a B is shown. If an earnings report met or was below expectations then an M is shown. If the data is unavailable a '-' will be shown. The most recent result will be in the left most column and the oldest result will be in the right most column. For example, assume the display is BMMMM. The B indicates that the most recent report beat expectations and all reports before that were misses. DTG='Days To Go', this is the number of calendar days until the next earnings release and is mainly used as a search criteria in the scanner. 8

9 Chart Analysis display: The current bar will show the number of calendar days until the next earnings release. The format is NER xxd which stands for Next Earnings Release in xx Days. If the number of days remaining is greater than input cautionwarning it will not be displayed. If it is less than input cautionwarning it will be shown in the color of input cautioncolor. If it is less than input imminentwarning it will be shown in the color of input imminentcolor. In this example the cautionwarning was set to 70 and cautioncolor was set to yellow. 9

10 Scanner display: This figure shows a simple scan that is setup to find all stocks that are over $10, that have a daily volume of at least 200,00 share and that have an earnings release within the next 7 days. 10

11 Chart Analysis Window with showdatawindow='true': The data window on the right of the frame shows various things with respect to earnings releases: o The top of the window shows the stock symbol and the company name as well as the currently scheduled date for the next earnings release and the estimated EPS value o The next table shows historical data for the prior earnings releases and up to 12 prior earnings releases will be shown The 'PrePeriod1' column shows how the stock has performed for the period of days selected by the preperiod1 input. The default is 10 days prior to earnings release. The 'Explosion' column shows how the stock performed in response to the earnings announcement. This is the percentage move beginning with the closing price of the day before earnings until the opening price of the day after earnings. The 'PostPeriod1' column shows how the stock has performed for the period of days selected by the postperiod1 input. The default is 10 days after earnings release. o The second table shows statistical data for how a stock has performed during the PrePeriod1 period for the number of periods defined in the mostrecentperiods input. In the above example PANW has moved up 4 out of 4 times in the PrePeriod1 days before an earnings announcement by an average of 9.13%. PANW has moved up 11 out of 12 times in the PrePeriod1 days before an earnings announcement by an average of 9.84%. 11

12 o o The third table shows the statistical data for how a stock has performed in reaction to an earnings report during the Explosion period for the number of periods defined in the mostrecentperiods input. In the above example PANW has moved up 3 out of 4 times in the Explosion period by an average of 9.04%. PANW has moved up 10 out of 12 times in the Explosion period by an average of 7.64%. The fourth table shows statistical data for how a stock has performed during the PostPeriod1 period for the number of periods defined in the mostrecentperiods input. In the above example PANW has moved up 4 out of 4 times in the PostPeriod1 days after an earnings announcement by an average of 4.21%. PANW has moved up 7 out of 12 times in the PostPeriod1 days after an earnings announcement by an average of 4.04%.
